CIF HS Games: Results & Details From
Friday, 1/4/02--(Jan. 5, 2002)

The heart of high school basketball season is now beginning as the tournaments wind down, and league play starts.  For some of the larger leagues (7 or more teams per league), competition among the league teams began last month; for most everyone else, it starts this week.  Many of the LA City Section teams are off, or playing a reduced schedule until school reopens after the winter break, and the same is true this week for many of the Southern Section teams.  Still, there was plenty of action going on this past Wednesday.  Here's what we know, gathered from reports sent to us from team representatives, coaches, players and parents, as well as what we've been able to gather from local newspapers and websites. If you know of a game that we missed, a score that is unreported, or some details that we're missing, send it in via e-mail.

The Royals got out to an 8-0 lead, but Pickert cut into it with a 3-pointer and a runner to make it 10-7. That would be as close as Dos Pueblos ever got. Near the end of the second quarter, with the Chargers' trailing 27-19 after Pickert hit another trey, Kevin Iden was whistled for a foul on the other end.  Iden argued the call and was given a technical, his fifth foul, with 1:47 to play before halftime. Kupperman hit the technical free throws to make it a 10-point lead. That ignited a 12-4 run that included a pair of Kupperman triples. That got San Marcos out to a 39-26 lead and there was nothing Pickert could do to bring the Chargers back.  The Royals took a 13-point lead into the half, but only extended it to a 15-point lead at the end of three quarters. San Marcos hit seven 3-pointers, with two each for Kupperman and Sean Downing. As a team, the Royals made 17 shots, compared to Dos Pueblos' nine.  San Marcos scored 25 points in the fourth and Downing netted all eight of his points in the final minutes. The Lightning had three-pointers in the first quarter from 6-foot-3 sophomore Kevin Joyce (12 points) and junior guard Erik Williams (10) as the hosts built a 12-10 lead by period's end.

He hit just two field goals and was an uncharacteristic 4-of-8 from the free throw line.  Horizon (12-3) was led by Nate Carter who scored 30 points, including a spectacular second half when the 6-7 senior hit from outside, ran the break, passed, rebounded and threw down two dunks -- one a tomahawk slam off a fast break and the other to convert an offensive rebound. Horizon's Ryan Read and Bena Veikalas each scored 14 and Jared Dudley added 11. Veikalas and Read also hit a pair of three-pointers. Torrey Pines 54, El Cajon Christian 34-- It took a little more than a quarter to figure out the Patriots (7-7), but Torrey Pines (13-1) gained control early in the second period and maintained its lead with tight defense and opportunistic offense.  Avi Fogel guided the Falcons on offense, scoring 13 points, and his defense led to some easy baskets. Josh Kramer and Rod Benson were strong inside with 10 points each, while J.J. Brull added nine. Benson led the team in rebounds with eight.  Christian opened against Torrey Pines in a rare tough zone defense, which slowed the Falcons in the second quarter, allowing the Patriots to tie the game at 14. Torrey Pines recovered with a patient offensive scheme and waited for the open shot. In the second half, Christian focused on stopping inside penetration so much that it didn't pressure an outside shot.   The Falcons worked on their defense because they faced 6-foot-10 Moulaye Niang, Christian's standout center. Niang uses his frame to take control from under the basket.  However, Benson and Ryan Neff combined to cover Niang and make him a non-factor. Niang grabbed only three rebounds and scored three points. His only field goal came in the final minute of the contest against the second string.   The Patriots were led by John Wai with 13 points. Niang was in foul trouble early, and sat on the bench the second quarter. He still ended up fouling out at the end of the contest.   Christian 10  6  9  9 -- 34 Torrey Pines 14 13  9 18 -- 54 Christian (7-7) -- Paddock 6, J.Wohlfeil 4, Dowgell 2, Wai 13, B.Wohlfeil 6, Niang 3. Other Games, Friday, Jan 4, 2002

We're not exactly sure where the "Pacific Baptist Athletic League" is based (and we thought we knew all there was to know about every high school league in SoCal), but apparently the Riverside Press-Enterprise believes it's a high school league, because they reported some scores in their January 5, 2002 (web-based) boys' basketball roundup.  Here's what the Press-Enterprise had to say:

Pacific Baptist Athletic League

Wildomar Faith Baptist 65, Santa Ana Bethel Baptist 44 -- Faith Baptist (4-0, 15-0) -- Beil 22, Applegarth 10, Cook 9, Goddard 6, Spearman 13, Barnard 3, Marrujo 2. Bethel Baptist (2-3, 6-7) -- Fournie 9, Chisum 5, Meguerditchian 14, J.Hilo 8, R.Hilo 8.  Halftime score -- Faith Baptist 31-22. Three-point goals -- Cook, Fournie, Meguerditchian 2. Total fouls -- Faith Baptist 15, Bethel Baptist 13. Fouled out -- none.

The San Diego North County Times also reported on this game, so apparently these two schools really do exist and so does the league.  Here's what the NCT said about the game:  "Bethel Baptist, Faith Baptist remains undefeated after cruising to a Pacific Baptist Athletic League win.  Brett Beil led Faith Baptist (15-0, 4-0 league) with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Floyd Spearman chipped in 13 points and 14 boards while Dave Applegarth finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Faith Baptist does not return to action until Jan. 18."

Again, we can't recall ever hearing about these schools or this league (and it's hard to believe we haven't yet heard about a team which is 15-0 & 4-0 in league), but apparently they do exist.....
