CIF HS Games: Results & Details From
Monday, 1/7/02--(Jan. 9, 2002)

The heart of high school basketball season has begun, and teams are for the most part playing league games, the second season within a season.  Here's what we know, gathered from reports sent to us from team representatives, coaches, players and parents, as well as what we've been able to gather from local newspapers and websites. If you know of a game that we missed, a score that is unreported, or some details that we're missing, send it in via e-mail.

CIF-Southern Section League Games, Monday, Jan. 7, 2002

Arrowhead League

La Verne Lutheran 77, Noli Indian 27-- Brandon Theus had 23 points and 12 rebounds for La Verne Lutheran (5-3, 1-0) in an Arrowhead League victory.  Theus also pulled down 12 rebounds while teammate David Beckett had 14 points, 13 rebounds and John Harmon, 12 points, 15 rebounds. Noli was led by Mark Morris and Galen Williams who each had 12 points. The Trojans were able to build a 29-5 lead after the first quarter and had a lot of fast break points by pulling down rebounds and putting them in the basket.


Bay League

Santa Monica 52, Leuzinger 49 --Brett Deangelis scored 18 points for Santa Monica (8-7, 2-1.)

Inglewood 59, Peninsula 52--Ray Reed scored 13 points as Inglewood (2-0 in league) rallied from a 19-7 first-quarter deficit. Tied, 45-45, after three quarters, the Sentinels won the fourth quarter, 22-15, to win the road game. Kevin Gardner scored 25 to lead Peninsula (10-6, 1-2).

Redondo 63, Mira Costa 53--Wendell White hit a wide open 3-point shot with only five seconds left on the shot clock late in the fourth quarter to give Redondo (9-5, 3-0) an eight-point lead with 1:28 remaining to clinch the win.   White finished with a game-high 26 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Mira Costa (8-7, 2-1) couldn't respond to White's shot, despite making eight 3-pointers, including two in the fourth quarter by senior Greg Geier, who led the Mustangs with 12 points and four rebounds. Austin Jefferson and Daniel William each had nine points, while  Brandon Hodges scored eight points and Rocky Ciasulli had seven. Jefferson led Mira Costa with six rebounds.  Redondo forward Adam Zahn added 15 points and seven rebounds while senior center Paul Meynen added four blocks. Redondo guard Eddie Topps had four assists and four rebounds.

North Torrance 80, Morningside 63--Morningside 63: Jun Senesac scored 15, Kenny Brown had 14 and Jason Davis added 13 points and 16 rebounds as North (9-5, 1-2) wins its first league game of the season. Alan Goodwin led Morningside (3-9, 0-3) with 13 points and nine rebounds.


Christian League

Western Christian 56, Loma Linda Academy 49-- Loma Linda Academy's Roadrunners struggled at the free-throw line in crunch time and fell to Western Christian 56-49 in a Christian League boys basketball game Monday. Trailing by one point, Loma Linda players missed the front end of three consecutive 1-and-1 free-throw opportunities in the final two minutes. Meanwhile, Western Christian made both ends of three consecutive 1-and-1s to pull away. Chris Purdom, a 6-0 sophomore guard, led Loma Linda with 10 points. Ryan Prior contributed eight points and six steals, and Colyn Newby had six points and a team-high five rebounds. The Roadrunners fell to 0-2 in league, 8-4 overall. Western Christian improved to 2-1, 11-6.


De Anza League

Banning 57, San Jacinto 51-- Marvin Harris' three-pointer gave Banning its first lead of the game, 49-48, with two minutes remaining and the Broncos held on for a De Anza League victory.Banning -- Malone 13, Figueroa 9, Turner 2, McDade 2, Harris 18, B. Colby 11, K. Colby 2.  San Jacinto (1-3, 5-8) -- Duguid 13, Wood 8, Medina 13, Hyland 8, Sullivan 6, Davis 2, Mitchell 1. Halftime score -- San Jacinto 28-25. Three-point goals -- Figueroa, Harris 2, Duguid 3, Medina. Total fouls -- Banning 23; San Jacinto 23. Fouled out -- Hyland. Technical fouls -- None.


Freedom League

Weaver 27, Twin Pines 26


Garden Grove League

Los Amigos 75, Rancho Alamitos 43 --Hector Degante had 25 points and Chris Finau had 13 rebounds for host Los Amigos (8-9, 2-0).

La Quinta 46, Garden Grove 41--details not immediately available.

Pacifica 57, Santiago 37--details not immediately available.


Golden West League

Ocean View 87, Santa Ana 37 --Ocean View (9-7, 1-0) was led by Matt Hatch who scored 19 points.


Marmonte League

Newbury Park 65, Simi Valley 48 --Chris Randall scored 23 points for Newbury Park (9-6, 2-0). A 23-point first quarter got host Newbury Park off and running in its game against the Pioneers.  Rudy Flores added 18, while Randy Meru had eight rebounds and six assists to go along with his four points. Simi Valley (10-5, 0-2) was led by K.C. Bellefontaine who had a team-high 11 points. Mark Wells scored nine.

Royal 62, Moorpark 61 --Kyle Vondrak scored 23 points for Royal. Blake Sharpe scored 13 points for Moorpark (10-6, 1-1). Royal (7-7, 1-0) opened the league campaign with a big winVondrack also grabbed 11 rebounds. Moorpark hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to pull to within a point, but Royal was able to run out the clock to get the win. Joel Hendershot added 19 points and four rebounds while
Robert Davis had eight points and eight rebounds. Moorpark's Shawn Fortman had 11.

Thousand Oaks 59, Agoura 53 --Thousand Oaks (13-3, 2-0) was led by Dave Anderson's 20 points and Ben Olson had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Agoura (5-8, 0-2) was led by senior Kevin Cornwell who scored a game-high 21 points.


Metro League

Upland Christian 79, Redlands Calvary Chp.34--Nick Roberds scored 23 points for Upland Christian (10-0, 4-0).

Riverside Christian 63, Lake Arrowhead Chr. 33 -- Riverside Christian outscored Lake Arrowhead Christian 26-3 in the third quarter to win a Metro League game. Ray Manning had 16 points and 16 rebounds for Riverside Christian. Riverside Christian (1-0, 4-2) -- Chiado 11, Thompson 6, Manning 16, Williams 4, Klix 18, LaFarga 3, Beaird 2, Johnston 2, Collins 1. Lake Arrowhead Christian -- Moody 7, Conedy 19, Kinsley 5, Netherland 2, McAlister 0.  Halftime score -- Riverside Christian 29-11. Three-point goals -- Chiado 3, Klix 3, Conedy 2. Total fouls -- Riverside Christian 9; Lake Arrowhead Christian 14. Fouled out -- None. Technical fouls -- Manning.

Wildomar Cornerstone Christian 84, Christian Center Academy 69--At Temescal Canyon High School, Josh Paul hit for 35 points and collected 12 rebounds in a Metro League win. Chris Paul added 20 points, 12 rebounds and five assists for the Crusaders (6-5, 2-1 Metro), while Grant Tretheway had 13 points and five assists.  Cornerstone Christian will travel to Redlands Calvary Chapel for a 7:30 p.m. game Wedne


Mission League

Harvard-Westlake 72, Chaminade 65 --Bryce Taylor scored 22 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead Harvard-Westlake (14-3, 3-1). Sophomore Evan Harris (6'-7" So. C/F) had 12 blocked shots to go along with 12 points and seven rebounds. Chaminade (13-4, 2-1) went on a 26-14  to close to within two at the half, 35-33, but never led in the game.  Bobby Weinberger finished with 17 points for the Wolverines. Marcus Everett had 16 points to lead Chaminade but was held to just two points in the second half after rolling his ankle early in the third.  Adrian Aye-Darko added 13 and Jon Todd finished with 10.


Moore League

Lakewood 47, Compton 37--Senior forward John Wegner had 12 points and 11 rebounds, Ese Lemusu added 9 points and 9 rebounds and Eugene Carey contributed 12 points and 7 assists as the Lancers (12-1, 1-0) beat Compton.

Millikan 52, Cabrillo 49-- Senior guard Melvyn Nicholson had 17 points and Marcus Dove added 14 to lead the Rams (9-5, 1-0), who went on a 14-11 run over the final eight minutes to edge the Jaguars (7-7, 0-1).  Jushay Rockett led Cabrillo with 16 points.

Poly 84, Jordan 52-- Poly jumped out to a 21-7 first-quarter lead. Reggie Butler, a 6-6 senior forward, led the Jackrabbits (12-2) with 19 points, including five thunderous dunks, and 6 rebounds. Senior forward Omar Devore paced Jordan (6-5) with 13 points, but the Panthers were outrebounded, 35-19.   Jones added 15 points and 6 rebounds for Poly, while junior forward Antoine King had 12 points and a game-high 4 steals for the Panthers. Poly point guard Carlos Rivers played a complete game, finishing with 12 points, 6 assists and 4 steals, before exiting midway through the third quarter.  The Jackrabbits, however, committed 20 turnovers while the Panthers turned the ball over 22 times.


Ocean League

Compton Centennial 74, Culver City 52 --Sterling Byrd scored 21 points for Compton Centennial (14-0, 3-0).

El Segundo 49, Beverly Hills 30 --Dashawn Strong led El Segundo (14-2, 3-0) 14 points and, with Tino Gomez, led a strong defensive front that held host Beverly Hills to 10 points in the first half.

Torrance 58, Hawthorne 55--Host Torrance (1-2 in league) rebounded from a seven-point halftime deficit with a 23-15 third-quarter run. Marshawn Williams hit two free throws with 17 seconds left to end the game. Williams finished with 15 points. Hawthorne (4-9, 1-2) was led by Mike Washington's 21 points and nine rebounds.

West Torrance 55, South Torrance 52-- Brad Dolick scored nine of his 11 points in the third quarter to help host West Torrance take control of the game and defeat South Torrance, 55-52, in an Ocean League game.  With 14 seconds remaining, Dolick hit two free throws to give West Torrance a three-point lead. Dewayne Hollyfield led West (7-8, 3-0) with 16 points and 10 rebounds and Sherwood Dixson added 11. Kevin Ritchie and Sean Flynn each scored 11 points for South (5-9, 0-3).


San Joaquin League

Acaciawood 43, Saddleback Valley Chr. 24--Acaciawood was led by Jesse Cope who scored 29.


Suburban League

Bellflower 80, Glenn 48 --Bellflower (7-7, 1-0) was led by Michael Hubbard who scored 21.

La Mirada 69, Cerritos 59 --La Mirada (6-10, 1-0) was led by Charlie Torres' 18.

Mayfair 69, Artesia 66 (2 OT) -- Louis Johnson of the Press Telegram was at the game, and this is a summary of what he wrote in today's P-T:  Matt McCraw scored 19 points for Mayfair (9-5, 1-0).  The senior point guard scored 7 of his team-high 19 points in overtime, including a pair of free throws with 3.3 seconds left.   Artesia held a 55-53 lead with 41.4 seconds left in regulation and had the ball in its possession.  But McCraw intercepted a pass and fed senior guard Aaron King (14 points) for a layup with 31.6 seconds to play to tie it at   55-55 and send the game to overtime.  After Artesia's Kejuan Johnson (19 points) sank a pair of free throws to give his team a 61-60 lead, Mayfair junior forward Justin Hawkins drilled a 3-pointer and McCraw followed with a long jumper to give the Monsoons a 65-61 edge with just over a minute to play.  But Artesia senior forward Ronald Allen, who scored a game-high 22 points, then scored on a jumper and after Hawkins (9 points) sank two foul shots, senior guard Jamel Gay delivered a huge three-point play with 30.3 seconds left to cut the deficit to 67-66.  Mayfair missed the front end of two one-and-one foul shots in the final 27.3 seconds, the latter by forward Chris Childress with 12.5 seconds left on the clock that gave the Pioneers one final shot to win. However, Allen fed Terrence Henderson after rebounding the last missed foul shot and Henderson had the ball stolen from him by King with four seconds remaining.  Senior Brian Thomas came off the bench to score 15 points, including nine in the third quarter, for the defending league champion Monsoons, who beat the Pioneers for the third consecutive time in league play. The Pioneers (7-5) defeated the Monsoons (8-5) in overtime last month, 68-66, in the consolation championship of the Tournament of Champions.


Valley League

Glendale Adventist 76, Summit View 39 --Glendale Adventist improved to 8-3, 3-1. Summit View is 2-7, 0-4.


Westside League

GH Hillcrest Chr. 110, West Valley Chr. 44 --Hillcrest Christian (8-5, 5-1) was led by Alex Martino who scored 20 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists in a game which Hillcrest controlled from start to finish.

Santa Clarita Christian 73, Highland Hall 36 --Daniel Duncan scored 21 points for Santa Clarita Christian (8-4, 2-0).

CIF-Southern Section Non-League & Intersectional Games, Monday, Jan 7, 2002

Lone Pine 83, Vasquez 51 --Ruben Brand scored 22 points for Lone Pine (5-9).

Blair 57, Marshall Fundamental 37--details were not immediately available. Marshall remains winless and the loss on Monday marked their 13th straight loss dating back to last season.

Rancho Verde 66, Valley View 45-- Moreno Valley Rancho Verde outscored Moreno Valley Valley View 18-9 in the third quarter to extend its lead en route to a non-league victory.Rancho Verde (8-8) -- Nogueira 9, Knight 2, Green 5, Williams 4, Brown 4, Winston 16, Rosell 10, Jones 8, Bukle 4, Tillman 4. Valley View -- Slaughter 19, Barrett 0, Lang 6, Rojas 3, Capala 6, Castillo 2, Martinez 6, Williams 3.   Halftime score -- Rancho Verde 32-21. Three-point goals -- Rosell 2. Total fouls -- Rancho Verde 16; Valley View 21. Fouled out -- None. Technical fouls -- None.
