CIF HS Games: Results & Details From
Tuesday, 1/8/02--(Jan. 9, 2002)

The heart of high school basketball season has begun, and teams are for the most part playing league games, the second season within a season.  Here's what we know, gathered from reports sent to us from team representatives, coaches, players and parents, as well as what we've been able to gather from local newspapers and websites. If you know of a game that we missed, a score that is unreported, or some details that we're missing, send it in via e-mail.

CIF-Southern Section League Games, Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002

Academy League

Calvary Chapel Downey 84, Sage Hill 45 --Utah-bound Timothy Drisdom had 41 points to lead visiting Calvary Chapel (12-3, 1-0), which won its 51st consecutive league game. Drisdom hit a school-record eight three-point baskets.

St. Margaret's 72, Brethren Christian 60 --Nic Benedetto had 18 points, Paul Janczyk 17 and Jeff Schafer and Ninyus Youkahanneh had 13 each for St. Margaret's (6-7, 2-0).


Agape League

Antelope Valley Christian 75, Victor Valley Christain 55 --Jeremiah Nurse and Tony Uebelhardt each had 16 points to lead visiting Antelope Valley Christian (9-5, 1-0). Mike Hofflinger had 14 points for Victor Valley Christian (5-5, 0-1).

Apple Valley Christian 95, Bethel Christian 8--We hope the score we got from the San Bernardino County Sun is an error, but we suspect it's not.  The paper reported that "Kevin Dillon had a triple-double with 15 points, 12 steals and 10 assists, and Josh Dillon had a double-double with 26 points and 14 assists as the Warriors (0-1 Agape League, 12-1) beat the short-handed [now that's an understatement] Eagles (0-1). Justin Nunes had 18 points and Ryan Manahl 16 points and seven rebounds for Apple Valley Christian."

Hesperia Christian 63, Joshua Springs 57 --In a tight game, Hesperia Christian (10-4, 1-0) took the lead from Joshua Springs (0-1, 10-3) early and never gave it up. Sophmore Jesse McDonald had 23 points for the Patriots and sophmore center Nate Patterson had a career high 22 points. HCS' Trevor Wagstaffe was able to stifle high-scoring Lightning sophmore Nathan Rynning to only 8 points but HCS could not stop Joshua Springs' Andre Comer who led all scorers with 27. Joshua Springs normally counts on Isaiah Hagerman but HCS was able to get him in foul trouble early. Patriot guard Aaron Garcia had 10 points and added 7  rebounds to maintain momentum for HCS.


Almont League

Alhambra 55, Keppel 42 --The host Moors scored 15 of the game's first 20 points and sailed to a 55-42 victory.  Keppel led, 3-2, less than two minutes into the game but Kevin Ly's driving layup helped spark Alhambra to a 13-2 run over the next six minutes  but it never got close again.  Keppel (9-8, 0-1) could not sustain maintain any offense, and in the third quarter, Alhambra (8-9, 1-0) took its biggest lead of 13 points when Art Chavez, who scored 18, sank a jump shot. Yamauchi and Kenneth So each scored 12 points to lead Keppel. Gomez had 10 and three steals.

Montebello 72, Bell Gardens 56 --Christian Saenz and Ian Parks each scored 22 points for Montebello (11-6, 1-0). Arsenio Ramirez scored 29 points for Bell Gardens (11-4, 0-1.) Christian Saenz and Ian Parks combined for 45 points and the Oilers, who led 38-35 at halftime, picked up their defensive pressure and outscored the Lancers, 17-9, in the third quarter. Saenz, a senior, scored a season-high 23 points and Parks had 22 for Montebello, which improved to 11-6 overall.

Schurr 63,  San Gabriel 37-- Eleven players scored for Schurr, as Shaun Oshita led with 12 points and six steals as Schurr improved to 5-8 overall, 1-0 in league.  Eija Fuji and Manny Menchaca each scored nine, Derek Lowrey 6 points, 13 rebounds and Nathan Negrette six points, 10 rebounds.


Alpha League

L.A. Baptist 57, Pasadena Marshall 54 --Austin Nicholson scored 21 points for L.A. Baptist (4-9, 1-0). Marshall fell to 0-13, 0-1.


Arrowhead League

Ambassador Christian 76, CSDR 68--Ambassador Christian's Jose Guzman finished with 32 points, 14 assists and seven rebounds. Johnny Orozco added 16 points and Brandon Gieden chipped in 13 points and 10 boards for the Dawgs (6-4, 3-0). CSDR's Ontario Scott finished with 27 points.  Ambassador Christian was down 55-54 to start the fourth quarter and was able to gain the lead when CSDR's head coach and assistant coach were called for technical fouls, sending Ambassador to the line for six consecutive free throws. Ambassador made 4 of 6 free throws and scored on the possession to take a small lead, and kept it.  CSDR (4-1, 7-3) -- Morales 2, Stott 27, A.Guzman 2, Albene 4, Bayarsky 4, Merino 6, Amaro 13, Cayton 4, Smith 6. Ambassador Christian (3-0, 6-4) -- Hardy 2, J.Guzman 32, Martin 10, Giden 13, Orozco 16, Garcia 3.  Halftime score -- Ambassador Christian 34-33. Three-point goals -- J.Guzman 2, Martin, Giden. Total fouls -- CSDR 29, Ambassador Christian 14. Fouled out -- Albene, Hardy. Technical fouls -- CSDR bench 2.

Boys Republic 88, Noli Indian 43 --John Flanagan scored 26 for Boys' Republic (6-1, 2-0). Four Rams finished in double figures for rebounds, led by Larry Khum with 15 and Sam Segovia had nine points and 12 rebounds in an Arrowhead League win.  Jamaal Magee added 16 points, Khum scored 13 and Segovia had nine.

La Sierra Academy 54, Hamilton 32--After a 12-10 first quarter, La Sierra Academy scored 23 in the second quarter to take control in an Arrowhead League victory. Hamilton (2-2, 4-9) -- n/a.  La Sierra Academy (3-0, 6-5) -- Paschal 7, Gutierrez 3, Moya 2, Barber 9, Bullon 14, Mendoza 10, Verde 6, Negroni 2, Bearden 1. Halftime score -- La Sierra Academy 35-23. Three-point goals -- Verde 2, Bullon 2. Total fouls -- Hamilton 12, La Sierra Academy 14. Fouled out -- none. Technical fouls -- Trinidad (LS).


Baseline League

Claremont 59, Chino 53-- Cameron Munoz, who finished with 21 points and six steals for the Wolfpack (13-5, 1-1), scored five points in the final two minutes. Shaddean Aaron scored 17 points and Perrin Johnson had 15 for Claremont, which bounced back from Saturday's loss to Glendora at Azusa Pacific. Aaron Marcy led Chino (8-8, 1-1) with 21 points. John Dominguez and Robert White each had 14.   Trailing 51-50 with 2:17 left to play, Claremont went on a 9-2 run.

Glendora 62, Upland 58 -- Senior guard Larry Monroe scored a game-high 28 points for the Tartans (14-1, 2-0), who also received 11 points, 12 rebounds and five assists from forward Spencer Foster. Foster's three-pointer with 40 seconds remaining gave the Tartans a 62-58 lead and Upland (12-5, 1-1) knocked in a long three-pointer to beat the buzzer.  Eric Holland led the Highlanders with 15 points and Jay Rasch added 14. Todd Martin scored 11 points, but was forced to leave the court early in the second quarter after suffering an ankle injury. It was the second consecutive one-point league victory for the Tartans, who received a game-high 28 points from Larry Monroe. The Highlanders trailed by as many as seven points in the final quarter, but their comeback fell short.

Walnut 58, Don Lugo 51 (OT) -- Richard Snyder had 16 points and nine rebounds, Kevin Tlutko had nine points and Mike Guzik had eight points in the overtime loss for Don Lugo (4-15, 0-2).  Daniel Jones had 22 points to lead visiting Walnut (9-6, 1-1). Jones made eight of 13 free throws in the overtime period to clinch a Baseline League victory. Vivek Vinjahmur added 15 points for Walnut which trailed at the start of the second, third and fourth quarters, but led 47-45 until Don Lugo's Richard Snyder connected on two free throws with 15 seconds remaining to force overtime. Snyder led the Conquistadores (4-15, 0-2) with 16 points and nine rebounds.


Century League

Canyon 74, El Modena 62 --Tremayne Didier scored 17 points and Derron Putnam added 14 for visiting Canyon (6-10, 1-0). Jerard Raab scored 28 points for El Modena (0-1 in league).

Santa Ana Valley 45, Foothill 42 --Alex Orejel and Martin Gonzalez scored 16 points each for visiting Santa Ana Valley (12-5, 1-0). Francisco Flores scored 11 points for Foothill (9-8, 0-1).

Villa Park 59, Orange 43--After losing to Mater Dei by 20, Villa Park (15-2, 1-0) rebounded over the Panthers (13-4, 0-1) with the win at Orange.  Kyle Hogan led Villa Park with 21 points and 10 rebounds, including four three-pointers (nine points in the fourth quarter).  Markus Smith led the Panthers with 18 points, on 5 for 17 shooting from the field.


Christian League

Arrowhead Christian 79, Murrieta Calvary Chapel 62 --Josh Breckley had 24 points and 16 rebounds for Arrowhead Christian (10-2, 2-0). Ryan Evans scored 26 for Calvary Chapel(8-6, 0-2). Ryan Evans and Luke Wilkerson scored 49 points between them. Josh Cloud, Jacob Goltry and Will Britt combined for 38 more in the Eagles' second straight home victory. Alan Lewis, Cloud, Britt and Goltry combined on 17 assists.

Loma Linda Academy 70, Linfield 51--With only two subs on the bench, Loma Linda Academy was able to out-run Temecula Linfield to take and keep the lead in the second half for a Christian League victory. Ryan Prior had 28 points and six assists for Loma Linda (9-4, 1-2), which outscored Linfield (5-6), 22-4, in the fourth quarter. Linfield led 36-29 at the half, but Ryan Prior drilled in 28 points in a Roadrunner lineup that was missing three players due to team violations. When the Roadrunners held the Lions to just four points in the final period, LLA had its first Christian League win. Byron Aprecio added 13 and Kiff Rivinius had 12. Linfield countered with Mike Duarte (16), Chuck Wilson (13) and Zack Wold (11).  Linfield (0-3,5-7) -- Wold 11, Wilson 13, Duarte 15, LoFranco 6, Rodriguez 5, Beckman 1.  Loma Linda Academy (1-2,9-4) -- Aprecio 13, Prior 28, Nelson 3, Rivinius 12, Stottlemyer 6, Alexander 2, Newby 6. Halftime score -- Linfield 36-29. Three-point goals -- Wilson, Aprecio, Prior 3, Nelson. Total fouls -- Linfield 9, Loma Linda 18. Fouled out -- none. Technical fouls -- Linfield team.

Woodcrest Christian 54, Ontario Christian 50 --Cory Wells scored 21 in the first half the keep Woodcrest Chrsitian alive and returned in the fourth after being in foul trouble to score 11, putting Woodcrest Christian ahead for the victory over Ontario Christian in a Christian League game. Ontario Christian (1-2, 12-3) -- Elko 2, Talen 11, Hoekstra 16, Velasco 2, Garcia 3, Fitzhugh 5, Gabrielse 1, Vandenberg 10. Woodcrest Christian (3-0, 7-6) -- Wells 32, Hall 5, Lacey 3, Reyes 10, Wagner 4.  Halftime score -- Ontario Christian 26-25. Three-point goals -- Wells, Lacey, Fitzhugh, Garcia. Total fouls -- Woodcrest 10, Ontario 16. Fouled out -- none.  


Citrus Belt League

Eisenhower 90, Redlands East Valley 55 --Senior forward Johnny Dukes had 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead Eisenhower (14-2, 1-0). Junior forward Sean Marshall added 18 points and 11 rebounds.  The Wildcats came out in a 3-2 zone, hoping to keep Ike from pounding it inside. It worked, for awhile, and Redlands East Valley only trailed by 7 at the half, 30-23. . Marshall scored most of his 18 points in the Eagles' 34-point third quarter. That's when Ike opened up a 64-38 lead. Charles Cabuhat's trio of three-pointers led to his team-high 12 points. Walter Wallace added 10 more. Eisenhower (1-0,14-2) -- Moss 4, Shields 4, McJimson 4, Marshall 18, Dukes 23, Nelson 10, Hudson 2, Perry 2, Burke 5, Webster 3, Massengale 8, Jones 7.   Redlands East Valley (0-1,n/a) -- Dowdy 6, Smith 9, Salter 7, Kelley 4, Lyles 2, Wallace 10, Cabunat 12, Grijalva 5. Halftime score -- Eisenhower 30-22. Three-point goals -- Marshall, Webster, Massengale 2, Dukes 2, Grijalva, Cabunat, Salter. Total fouls -- Eisenhower 25, Redlands East Valley 21. Fouled out -- none.

Redlands 63, Rialto 62 (OT)-- Adrian Alsobrooks hit a game-winning three-pointer as Redlands defeated Rialto in overtime. Alsobrooks finished with 18 points including a pair of three-pointers. Redlands (8-8, 1-0) was helped by Ryan Rogers' 14 points. Sean Green finished with 18 points for Rialto. 


Coast Valley League

North County Christian 69, Cuyama 50 --Luke Sexton scored 21 points and Brian Ricks added 20 points, 13 rebounds and 10 steals for North County Christian (3-10, 1-0).


Delphic League

Crossroads 46, Campbell Hall 36 --Robert Locke scored 22 points for Crossroads (8-5, 1-0). Darryl Harris scored 16 points for Campbell Hall (5-9, 0-1).

Montclair Prep 84, Brentwood 78 --Nick Stiggers scored36 points, 3 assists, 10 rebounds and 4 blocked shots, and Robert Lewis scored 15 points for Montclair Prep (6-9, 1-0), which rallied from 11 points down in the second half. Nick Henry had 23 points for Brentwood (14-3, 0-1) and Brandon Turner and Brandon Nishimura each added 18 points. The game marked the debut for Stiggers, a recent transfer from Memphis, Tennessee.  For more on Stiggers, see our article on the game and his performance.

Pacific Hills 58, Whitney 36 --Ahmahl Amedu scored 22 points for Pacific Hills (10-7, 1-0). Danielle Son scored 14 points for Whitney (9-6, 0-1).


Desert Mountain League

Desert Christian 84, Lucerne Valley 31 --Mike Spears scored 23 points and Brian Waugh added 20 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and eight steals for Desert Christian (8-3, 1-0).

Lone Pine 65, Boron 58 --Randall Borbour had 28 points for host Lone Pine (6-9, 1-0). Rick Hughes had 20 points for Boron.


Desert Sky League

Silverado 56, Ridgecrest Burroughs 45 -- Senior 5'-8" guard Virgil Wilkins scored 15 points and pulled down 8 rebounds, and sank three three- pointers to lead host Silverado (10-7, 2-0). Burroughs is 7-6, 0-2.  Sophomore 6-1 guard Jaime Lester had 13 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists for Silverado.

Victor Valley 79, Granite Hills 46 --DeJesus Brown scored 21 points for Victor Valley (14-3, 1-0). Ramell Mitchell and Garrett Woodward scored 11 points for Granite Hills (5-8, 1-1).  Senior Joe Holly chipped in 10 points and six steals for Victor Valley, which had 30 steals that limited Granite Hills to eight points in the first quarter.


Desert Valley League

Cathedral City 74, Desert Hot Springs 48 --Senior power forward Thomas Shewmake had 16 points and 11 rebounds for visiting Cathedral City (10-5, 3-0). Chris Green also scored a career high 16 points for the Lions.  Brandon Gray scored 14 points for Cat City. Hershon Moore led the Golden Eagles with 15 points.

Palm Springs 72, Coachella 63 -- Palm Springs senior guard Kevin Howard was 6 for 6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. His teammate, junior forward Cedric Rougely, had 13 points and 10 rebounds in a Desert Valley League win. The Indians held a nine point lead over the Arabs at halftime 35-26. Kevin Howard sealed the game for the Indians as he went 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. Howard finished with 21 points and Blake Spurgin scored 15 points in the victory. Cedric Rougely chipped in 13 points for the Indians (8-8 overall and 2-1 in the DVL). The Arabs were led by Christian Limon as he scored 21 points in the paint. Coachella Valley (1-3, 5-9) -- Limon 21, Lopez 3, Caltron 12, Uriarte 7, Casto 3, Huerta 6, Ramos 9, Garcia 2. Palm Springs (2-1, 8-8) -- Berry 10, Claggett 3, Howard 21, Edwards 5, Whitted 5, Spurgin 15, Rougely 13.  Halftime score -- Palm Springs 35-26. Three-point goals -- Caltron 4, Castro, Berry, Claggett, Howard 3, Edwards. Total fouls -- Coachella 17, Palm Springs 16. Fouled out -- Caltron. Technical fouls -- Caltron.

Palm Desert 63, Indio 52 --Donald Brady and Chase McQuillen each scored 18 points for Palm Desert (14-4, 4-0). Indio is 9-6, 2-1.   Indio (9-6, 1-1) plays hosts to DVL defending champion Cathedral City on Friday. Brady scored 10 of his team’s first 12 points in the fourth quarter, a streak that included three 3-pointers. Josh Zazulia scored 11 and Sator had 8.  Down by 12 midway through the third, Indio put together an 8-2 run when Earl Issacson scored eight of his 15 points to make it a 48-39 game going into the final quarter of play. The play of Rodney King kept the Rajahs close throughout the contest. He finished with a game-high 19 points.   Palm Desert--23 10 12 18 -- 63 Indio--13 14 12 13--52 Palm Desert: Chase McQuillen 18, Don Brady Jr. 18, Josh Zazulia 11, Aki Sator 8, Jacob Broyles 2, Joe Johnson 2, Jimmy Bohm 2 Indio: Rodney King 19, Earl Issacson 15, David Brown 5, Daniel Cruz 4, Anthony Lopez 4, Chuy Perez 3, Andres Nieto 2


Express League

South Bay Lutheran 72, Liberty Christian 55--Qyntyn Webb had 19 points and Donivyn Zanders added 16 points and 13 rebounds in the league opener for the host Waves (3-2, 1-0).


Foothill League

Hart 72, Burbank Burroughs 62 --Cody Kase scored 19 points to lead visiting Hart (15-3, 2-0). Hart had four players score in double figures. Burroughs is 0-2 in league.

Saugus 82, Canyon 80 --D.J. Willkomm converted a free throw with seven seconds remaining to snap an 80-80 tie. Marc Holmquist scored 19 points and Sheldon Bell had 17 points and seven rebounds for Saugus (10-8, 2-0). Chad Eichten scored 25 points and Jeremy Haggerty added 22 points for Canyon (1-1 in league).


Freedom League

Rio Contiguo 66, Rio Rancho 53 --Chris Cooper had 25 points and 11 rebounds for Rio Contiguo. Kevin Tyler had 22 points for Rio Rancho (7-3, 7-3).  Rio Contiguo (8-3) -- Bush 16, Mendoza 2, Beazley 9, Cooper 25, McDaniel 11, Manajerez 2, Pena 1.  Rio Rancho (7-3) -- Dixon 18, Spencer 2, Tyler 22, Brown 4, Ballard 0, Skyberg 2, Robinson 2, Coleman 3. Halftime score -- Rio Contiguo 36-28. Three-point goals -- Coleman, Bush 3, Beazley 2, Cooper, McDaniel. Total fouls -- Rio Contiguo 12, Rio Rancho 17. Fouled out -- none.


Frontier League

Nordhoff 60, Malibu 40 -- Nordhoff (60) -- Swift 19, Stroup 17, Cioffe 4, Bensley 3, Murphy 2, Brubaker 8, Nylander 2, Woolsey 5. Santa Clara 68, Calabasas 55 --Anthony Marquez scored 21 points and Alex Minney added 20 for host Santa Clara (10-8, 1-1). Steve Saunders scored 15 points for Calabasas (10-8, 1-1).


Golden League

Antelope Valley 71, Highland 63 --Ollie Bradley scored 21 points and Greg Culver added 16 points for Antelope Valley (13-4, 1-0). David Kennedy scored 18 points and Tre Peters had 17 points for Highland (8-8, 0-1).


Ivy League

Canyon Springs 60, North 56--Tron Smith had 15 points and eight rebounds and Andre McGee added 13 points and eight steals as Moreno Valley Canyon Springs defeated Riverside North in an Ivy League opener. Canyon Springs got off to a fast start, but the Cougars' poor foul shooting (9 of 21) allowed North to stay in the game into the fourth quarter. Smith made a driving layup with just over a minute to play to give Canyon Springs a three-point lead. The Cougars then stole the ball and scored to extended their lead to five, and North never got within four. Richard Cobbs, the Cougars' leading scorer, sat out the game with the abdominal strain. Cobbs suffered the same injury earlier this season and mised a handful of gamesNorth (0-1 in league) -- Howard 19, Esquivel 19, Marlon 2, Weight 8, Whar 6, Martinez 2.  Canyon Springs (1-0, 12-6) -- Smith 15, McGee 13, Arwine 8, Adams 7, Woods 4, James 6, McCray 6, Hughes 1. Riverside Poly 63, Moreno Valley 56 --Riverside Poly led by 13 early in the fourth quarter, and held off a late rally by Moreno Valley to win an Ivy League opener. Moreno Valley cut the Bears lead to five points late in the game. Jeremy Lopez (31 points, 14 rebounds) had 10 points in the fourth to hold off the Vikings.  Moreno Valley (0-1,10-7) -- Butler 12, Bundy 3, Barnett 18, Dillon 14, Griego 3, Acevedo 1, Nicholson 3, Marshall 2. Arlington 57, Valley View 50 --Senior guard Rafael Simon had 16 points, 10 steals and six rebounds and hit a decisive three with under two minutes to go, leading Riverside Arlington to an Ivy League season-opening victory. Valley View (0-1, 5-11) -- Slaughter 18, Niwigne 2, Overton 3, Castille 4, Kalapaca 10, Rogers 2, White 6, Barrett 5. Arlington (1-0, 7-10) -- Simon 16, Adrainnse 6, Holguin 14, Acosta 8, Thomas 4, Lefotu 3, McGee 6.  Halftime score -- Arlington 33-22. Three-point goals -- White 2, Simon 2, Holguin 3. Metro League

Upland Christian 57, Cal Lutheran 44 --Nick Roberds had 24 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists  to lead Upland Christian (11-4, 5-0). D.J. Morgan added 10 points and 8 rebounds as the Eagles remained unbeaten in Metro League play. Upland Christian led 21-10 after the first quarter. Despite sophomore forward Robert Betts' 15 points and 10 rebounds, Wildomar Cal Lutheran lost. Upland Chr. (3-0, n/a) -- Roberts 24, Morgan 10, Smith 4, Chavez 4, Uncicker 3, Hensley 2, Beatrice 2, Gilbert 2, Manning 6. Cal Lutheran (0-1, 0-8) -- Betts 15, Neujahr 10, Campbell 8, Poppick 4, Terrian 4, Miller 3. Halftime score -- Upland Chr. 27-20. Three-point goals -- Uncicker, Roberts 2. Mojave River League

Apple Valley 76, Rim of The World 72 -- Senior Jamal Holden scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead Apple Valley to a 76-72 victory over visiting Rim of the World in a Mojave River League game. Holden made four three-pointers for the Sun Devils but also sank 7-of-7 free throws in the fourth quarter to keep the Scots (1-1 league) at arms length. Senior Carlton Murray added 20 points and a game-high 17 rebounds for Apple Valley. Jon Jurardo, a senior guard, led four Rim of the World players in double figures with 18 points.Holden hit a critical free throw with seven seconds to play to secure the win for Apple Valley (13-2, 2-0). Santa Ana Calvary Chapel 78, Whittier Christian 50 --Joey Jones scored 16 points and Steven Olivas added 13 points and seven steals for host Calvary Chapel (6-9, 1-1). Tim Albeanu scored 20 points for Whittier Christian (5-11, 0-2).


Pacific League

Glendale 84, Arcadia 75 --Isa Hall had 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists for host Glendale (9-8, 1-0-). Teammate Hugo Guerrero had 20 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Dante Owens scored 23 points for Arcadia (12-6, 0-1) and  Brett Dohling had 19. The Nitros made 10-of-11 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off the Apaches.

Muir 70, Hoover 34 --Seth Davis scored 15 points and had 15 rebounds for Muir (16-0, 1-0). Also scoring in double-digits were Chris Dickson (13 points), Jamaal Hall (11), Ryan Hollins (11) and Devon Thomas (10).

Pasadena 52, Crescenta Valley 49 --McKenzie Clark scored with less than a minute remaining to put Pasadena (11-4, 1-0) ahead for good, 50-49. Jimmy Goffredo scored 22 points and Chris Tarne had 15 points for Crescenta Valley (11-6). Senior guard Duwan Rice (5'-8" Sr. PG) made several key plays down the stretch and Pasadena's defense kicked it up a notch to erase a double-digit, third-quarter deficit and earn a 52-49 victory.  The visiting Falcons led, 39-28, late in the third and Pasadena's all-area guard Dino Wilburn, who scored just six points, was being blanketed by CV's Brenden Couper. In the fourth quarter, Rice responded with eight points in a 17-7 run that trimmed an 11-point deficit to one with 2:35 left.  Crescenta Valley's Jimmy Goffredo answered with a 3-pointer to put CV ahead, 49-45. But it was the last time the Falcons would score. Trailing by two with 1:20 left, Rice stole a pass and was alone on a breakaway, attempted a dunk, and missed.  Wilburn got the rebound and made 1 of 2 free throws to get PHS (11-4, 1-0) within one.  Rice also blocked a jumper by Goffredo late in the game, and finished with a team-high 14 points.


Prep League

Flintridge Prep 56, Pasadena Poly 46 --Connor O'Byrne had 17 points to lead visiting Flintridge Prep (4-9, 2-0). Matt Robbins had 20 points for Pasadena Poly (4-11, 0-1).

Chadwick 44, Webb 41-- Wes Putnam had 13 points and 15 rebounds as Chadwick posted a 44-41 Prep League victory over host Webb. Matthew Fournier had nine points and six assists, and Brian Bohlinger added nine points and three steals for the Dolphins (4-3, 1-0). Arjun Rao finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and four assists for the Gauls (2-8, 0-1). Derek Baczynski was Webb's high scorer with 12 points.


San Andreas League

Cajon 76, San Gorgonio 59 --After a 21-15 first quarter deficit, San Bernardino Cajon mounted a 27-10 second quarter run, largely behind Donovan Morris' 14 points. Cajon maintained its lead with strong defense including 16 steals and strong play from the bench with Rummel Clark, Dmytry Lewis and Danial Cooper combining for 11 rebounds. Despite the fact that Carpinteria's Nick Zemke missed four 3-pointers and the Warriors leading only by two (43-41) with seconds to play, Zemke hit a three pointer from the top of the key to give Carpinteria (6-7, 1-0) the final margin of victory over Bishop Diego (7-10, 0-1).  Pat Minehan led all scorers and finished with 24 points for Bishop Diego.  Carpinteria's  Lopez and David Horton each had 10 points while Zemke and Justin Lamar had eight. Western League

Westchester 100, Fairfax 68--The Comets (12-1, 2-0), currently ranked No. 4 in the country after losing to No. 1 Oak Hill last week at the Houston Academy Invitational tournament, defeated their cross-town rivals, the Fairfax Lions (15-3, 1-1) who have widely been considered the No. 2 team in the City Section, for the second time this season.  The first time it was a two point game, but this time it was decisive, as Brandon Heath (who signed with San Diego State) scored 19 of his game high 24 in the second half.  Westchester was so dominant in this game that they opened up a lead of as much as 38 points in the second half.  Fairfax's Evan Burns (UCLA verbal commitment) finished with a team-high 21, 9 rebounds, including 10 in the fourth quarter and was being watched closely by several NBA scouts.  With an 18-point halftime lead, Westchester slammed the door shut on the Lions by starting the second half with a 10-0 run.  Scott Cutley had 17 points and seven rebounds for the Comets, and University of Arizona signee Hassan Adams finished with 14 points and five assists.   New Mexico signee Ashanti Cook added 13 points and five assists.  Westchester had 29 assists to just 10 turnovers as a team.  Georgetown signee Brandon Bowman finished with 6 points, on two 3-pointers.
