CIF HS Games: Results & Details From
Monday, 1/14/02--(Jan. 16, 2002)

We're now in the middle of the heart of high school basketball season, with teams competing for league titles and playoff berths, and soon the jockeying for seeding in the respective brackets will start as playoffs approach.   Here's what we know, gathered from reports sent to us from team representatives, coaches, players and parents, as well as what we've been able to gather from local newspapers and websites. If you know of a game that we missed, a score that is unreported, or some details that we're missing, send it in via e-mail.

CIF-Southern Section League Games, Monday, Jan. 14, 2002

American League

Renaissance Academy 87, Summit View 21-- details not available.


Arrowhead League

Boys Republic 72, La Sierra Academy 61 -- John Flanning scored 23 points and 11 rebounds for Boys Republic (9-1, 5-0) and teammate Jamal Magee had 21 points  and 10 rebounds and Greg Scheiman scored 16 points to lead the Rams to victory. La Sierra was led by James Barber's 14 points. The score was tied at 61-61 with two minutes to go in the fourth quarter when the Rams went on an 11-0 run to win the game.


De Anza League

Big Bear 69, Banning 68 --Brad Jennings scored 33 points for Big Bear (7-8, 4-2).  After Big Bear's Brian Siefert made a free-throw to break a 68-68 tie with five seconds remaining, Banning (5-1) could not get off a final shot. Big Bear's Brad Jennings led all scorers with 33 points, including five three-pointers, en route to a De Anza League victory. Siefert finished with eight points and 10 rebounds. Banning  -- Malone 15, McDade 12, Harris 15, Stokes 6, Campbell 10, B. Colby 7, K. Colby 3. Big Bear -- Jennings 33, Manor 3, Cavanagh 13, Zuidema 12, Siefert 8  Halftime score -- Big Bear 34-28. Three-point goals -- Harris 3, Campbell, K. Colby, Jennings 5, Cavanagh, Zuidema. Total fouls -- Banning 26, Big Bear 9. Fouled out -- K. Colby. Technical fouls -- B. Colby.


Del Rio League

California 58, La Serna 48 --Matt Amido scored 21 points for California (3-12, 1-2). La Serna is 9-11, 1-2.

El Rancho 73, Pioneer 71 (2 OT) --Matt Quiroz hit a three-point shot with in the second overtime to bring El Rancho (8-10, 3-0) within two points, 71-69. With the score tied 71-71 with five seocnds on the clock Quiroz grabbed a rebound and scored the winning basket. Al Santa Cruz had 20 points for El Rancho.

Desert Valley League

Indio 61, Palm Springs 54--Earl Isaacson had 17 points and 14 rebounds to lead Indio to a Desert Valley League victory.  Rodney King scored 12 points in the victory and Johnny Horta added 11. The Indians were led by Kevin Howard as he scored a game-high 27 points Palm Springs (9-7, 3-2) -- Barry 2, Claggett 2, Howard 27, Whitted 7, Spurgin 12, Rougely 4. Indio (10-7, 3-2) -- Perez 3, Horta 11, Hanes 2, Lopez 1, Nieto 3, King 12, Brown 7, Cruz 4, Isaacson 17. Halftime score -- Indio 26-16. Three-point goals -- Howard, Perez, Horta 3, Brown. Total fouls -- Palm Springs 15, Indio 14. Fouled out -- none.

La Quinta 69, Desert Hot Springs 67 --Billy Matthews scored 21 points and Paul St.Angelo added 20 points for La Quinta (5-13, 2-3). St. Angelo hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at 57-57 and send it into overtime. St. Angelo scored eight of his 20 points in the overtime period to help La Quinta to a Desert Valley League victory. Billy Matthews had 21 points and 12 rebounds. Josh Brodt had four blocks, including three in the overtime.Desert Hot Springs -- Thompson 2, Ortega 13, Edmonds 27, Tarrant 8, McSwain 6, Ramos 2, Cortez 2, Brown 7. La Quinta  -- Rivenes 3, Beavers 12, Matthews 21, St. Angelo 20, Sheehan 5, Brodt 2, Keahl 4, Dowd 2. Halftime score -- La Quinta 33-30. End of regulation 57-57. Three-point goals -- St. Angelo 2, Edmonds 2, Brown, Ortega. Total fouls -- Desert Hot Springs 25, La Quinta 22. Fouled out -- Beavers, Thompson.

Palm Desert 87, Cathedral City 58 --Senior guard Josh Zazulia scored 46 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Palm Desert (15-4, 5-0) passing the 1,000 point mark in his career in the win over Cathedral City (11-6, 4-1).  Cathedral City -- Aguinado 1, Simerson 10, Lee 8, Green 9, Oglesby 2, Brown 1, Otteson 7, Gray 9, Lewis 2, Shewmate 7, Bradley 2. Palm Desert -- Zazulia 46, McQuillen 13, Watkins 3, Brady 15, Broyles 2, Bohm 2, Sator 6. Halftime score -- Palm Desert 38-36. Three-point goals -- Simerson 2, Green 2, Otteson, Zazulia 4, McQuillen 3, Brady. Total fouls -- Cathedral City 22, Palm Desert 19. Fouled out -- Shewmake.


Express League

Liberty Christian 59, Pioneer Baptist 47--Patrick Doney's 24 points led the visiting Minutemen (3-13, 1-2).


Garden Grove League

Los Amigos 64, Bolsa Grande 62 --Chris Small hit two free throws with 20 seconds left in the game to seal Los Amigos' victory. Hector Degamte had 16 points and Chris Jalem had 15 to lead Los Amigos (11-9, 5-0 in league). Jimmy Ngo had 20 points for Bolsa Grande (12-6, 4-1 in league).  Bolsa Grande's high-scoring Omar Amaral finished with 14 points.

Pacifica 59, La Quinta 56 --Jason Brock had 11 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocked shots to lead Pacifica (9-10, 4-1) over La Quinta, which came back from a 19 point, first half deficit.  Subandhi netted 21 points and had 15 rebounds for La Quinta.

Simi Valley 53, Westlake 47 --Mark Wells scored 16 points for Simi Valley (11-7, 1-3). Rob Daniel had 18 points for Westlake.

Metro League

Riverside Christian 88, Calvary Chapel Redlands 8 -- No, that's not a typo, CC Redlands only scored 8 points in the game.  Ryan Klix scored 19 points for Riverside Christian (7-2, 4-0).  Redlands Calvary Chapel -- Rosebeary 2, McGee 2, Paugh 2, Cloud 1, Weston 1.  Riverside Christian  -- Williams 2, Ayres 17, Klix 19, Manning 9, Bowlus 10, Chiado 13, Thompson 6, Collins 6, LaFarga 6. Halftime score -- Riverside Christian 52-3. Three-point goals -- Chiado, Klix 2. Total fouls -- Redlands Calvary Chapel 7, Riverside Christian 11. Fouled out -- none.


Mission League

Loyola 79, Alemany 56 --Chris Rucker had 10 blocks for Loyola.

South Coast League

Mission Viejo 57, Capistrano Valley 52 -- Travis Niesen had 20 points to lead Mission Viejo (16-2, 3-0 in league). Pete Decasas had 22 for Capistrano Valley (14-5, 2-1 in league).  Mission Viejo led by 16 points with one minute left in the third quarter. Just two minutes into the fourth quarter, Mission Viejo led by one point, but the Diablos were able to hang on for the win.  Kevin Stacey added 16 points and Jake Collins 15 for the Diablos.

El Toro 89, San Clemente 55--Patrick Carney's 22 points and seven rebounds led the visiting Chargers (15-4, 3-0).


Suburban League

Artesia 76, Norwalk 46 --Kejuan Johnson scored 15 points for Artesia (10-5, 3-1).

Mayfair 65, Cerritos 61 --details not available.


Valle Vista League

Bonita 64, Sierra Vista 35 --Nik Kannan scored 12 points for Bonita (11-6, 4-1).  Sean Macaulay added seven rebounds. Tommy Musa had nine points, eight steals and six rebounds for the Bearcats. Bonita led 48-9 after the third quarter before giving up 26 points in the fourth quarter.

Covina 62, South Hills 54 --Jino La Bomme netted 31 points, dished out eight assists and had 14 steals for Covina (14-3, 3-2).

Ganesha 74, Northview 52 --Michael Efevbrha had a game-high 22 points as Ganesha (14-4, 4-1) defeated Northview 74-52 in a Valle Vista League matchup Monday at Ganesha High. Ganesha jumped to a 16-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and had a 34-17 lead at halftime.  Chris Reaves scored 16 points and Joseph Bonner scored 14 for the Giants.  Northview was led by James Gavin's 19 points. Ganesha .

San Dimas 73, Baldwin Park 64 --Curtis Small scored 21 points and Antouan Mesropian added 20 points and 12 rebounds for San Dimas (13-4, 5-0). Geary Thompson scored 28 points for Baldwin Park (5-10, 2-3).  San Dimas' Adrian Ferrera (15 points) and Schuyler Amirshahi (10 points) both had career-high games. Geary Thompson led Baldwin Park with 28 points.


Valley League

San Gabriel Academy 66, AGBU 55 --Jason Killebrew and Nick Rosas each scored 14 points for San Gabriel Academy (9-4, 6-0).

CEDU (n/a) -- Smith 19, Stein 18, Gamel 8, Van Dyke 3, Fowler 2, Bobble 1.  Halftime score -- Wilson Creek 29-20. Three-point goals -- Bader. Total fouls -- Wilson Creek 20, CEDU 16.
