Here's what we know from Wednesday's games, gathered from reports sent to us from team representatives, coaches, players and parents, as well as what we've been able to gather from local newspapers and websites. If you know of a game that we missed, a score that is unreported, or some details that we're missing, send it in via e-mail.

CIF-Southern Section League Games, Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2002

Academy League

Calvary Chapel Downey 86, Oxford Academy 32 --Mack Vanderhau scored for 14 points visiting Downey Calvary Chapel (15-3, 3-0). Jake Fermanian scored 10 points for Oxford Academy (3-14, 0-4).  Utah signee Tim Drisdom scored 13 points.


Alpha League

Kilpatrick 77, Pasadena Marshall 31 --Daryl Morris scored 20 points for Kilpatrick (12-3, 2-0).   Pasadena Marshall remains winless on the season.


Arrowhead League

La Sierra Academy 66, Ambassador Christian 52 --Jose Guzman led Ambassador Christian (6-7, 3-3) with 14 points, seven assists and five rebounds in the losing effort. Brandon Giden added 14 points for the Dawgs, who committed 31 turnovers in the game.


Camino Real League

Don Bosco 61, Cantwell 58 --Bosco Tech (12-5,2-1) pulled out a close one 61-58 against their long-time rivals Cantwell-Sacred Heart. The Tigers were led in scoring by Jack Bautista with 11 and Jameson Balinget with 10. For a summary of Bosco Tech  scoring go to www.eteamz.com/boscotech . Paul Kallimanis had 20 points for visiting Cantwell-Sacred Heart (5-12, 0-3).

Mary Star 58, St. Anthony 50 (OT) --Jeff Fiamengo scored 19 points for Mary Star (7-10, 2-1).

Channel League

Dos Pueblos 63, Ventura 52 --Dos Pueblos (11-7, 1-2) won for the first time in four games, behind Jonathan Pickert's game-high 23 points, efeating Ventura on Wednesday night.  The senior guard, who transferred to Dos Pueblos over the summer, hit 8 of 9 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter, and shot 16-17 overall in the game.  Ryan Glick added 16 points and seven rebounds. Ramsdell also had seven rebounds.  Ventura-- Laskoski 2, Hocomp 14, Prophet 10, Dixon 6, Salmon 5, Davis 6, Campbell 9. Totals 52. San Marcos 60, Buena 51--Seamus McKiernan, a 6-6 senior, scored 18 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked seven shots for San Marcos (12-6, 4-0).  Aaron Mercer added 11 points and five rebounds for the Royals, who went on an 8-0 run in the third quarter to take the lead.  Vince McMahon led Buena (11-8, 0-3) with 18 points.  Mercer scored seven of his 11 points in the fourth quarter and hit a key 3-pointer with three minutes to play.  Hylas Smith was held to six points, eight below his season average.  San Marcos-- Kupperman 8, McKiernan 18, Spaventa 10, Fortune 9, Mercer 11, Downing 2, Uyesaka 1. Thacher 59, Laguna Blanca 54 --Thacher (3-6, 4-0) was led by Graham Douds with 19 points and Brenton Sullivan with 15. Host Thacher led, 50-28, after three quarters before Laguna Blanca mounted a late rally. Eric Geeb had 17 points to lead the Owls (6-7, 3-1). Twentynine Palms 73, Yucca Valley 50 --Ken Randle had 21 points and 14 rebounds to lead visiting Twentynine Palms (10-6, 5-2).

Del Rey League

Bishop Montgomery 61, St. Paul 39 --Fred Washington scored 19 points and had 12 rebounds for Bishop Montgomery (16-4, 2-1). Kevin Dyer scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds for St. Paul (11-11, 0-2). Brandon Peace had 14 and Gavin Lee added 13. The Knights jumped to a 13-8 lead after one quarter, then got seven points from Lee in the second period to increase their margin to 27-10 at halftime.  St. Paul's Rudy Serna, who entered the game as the CIF Southern Section leader in 3-point baskets with 76, scored 11, including three three pointers in the third quarter.

Serra 77, St. Bernard 43 --Eugene Jeter had 23 points to lead host Serra (19-2, 4-0).


Del Rio League

El Rancho 59, La Serna 46 --Francis Chiong had 16 points, including 11 straight in the third quarter, to lead host El Rancho (9-10, 4-0). Matt Spain had 13 points for La Serna (9-12, 1-3).

Santa Fe 68, Pioneer 63--details not available.

Whittier 67, California 49 --Whittier (15-4, 3-1) picked up the win over California (3-15, 1-3) at home behind Mike Hernandez who scored 20 points,  on 7-12 shooting and 6-7 from the line. Teammate Niko Reibert scored 15 points. Senior guard Matt Amido led the Condors with 23 points, including six three pointers.


Desert Valley League

Cathedral City 62, Palm Springs 53 --Jared Otteson led Cathedral City (12-6, 5-1) with 20 points. Kevin Howard scored 28 points for Palm Springs. The starting five that the Cathedral City High boys basketball coach sent out on the floor to face Palm Springs was missing three of the team’s four tallest players. Thomas Shewmake, the Lions’ 6-foot-10 post player, was being benched for disciplinary reasons and Brandon Gray and Nathan Lewis (both 6-foot-5) weren’t suited up because they had the flu. Palm Springs (9-10, 3-3) led 16-15 when Shewmake checked in. Within 91 seconds he had two baskets off rebounds. El Dorado 60, Century 26 --El Dorado (16-3, 2-1) had 11 different players score, including David Patten, who had 10 points and Peter Bond and Matt Gartner, who had eight points apiece in the win over Century (12-5, 1-2). El Dorado led by 22 at halftime.

Loara 59, Katella 42 --Bryce Sheldon scored 25 points and Chad Lozano added 10 for host Loara (16-3, 3-0). Elliott Tyson scored 18 points for Katella (12-7, 1-2).

Cypress 56, Kennedy 42-- Orange County's leading scorer, Matt Reid,  collected 29 points for the visiting Centurions (14-5, 2-1).


Express League

South Bay Lutheran 72, Eastside Christian 49 --Qyntyn Webb scored 23 points and Michael Bonner added 19 for South Bay Lutheran (5-7, 3-0). TJ Fakehinde scored 27 points for Eastside Christian (3-10, 2-1).


Freeway League

Sunny Hills 72, Buena Park 45 --Clay Carmody had 22 points to lead visiting Sunny Hills (16-4, 3-0).

Bolsa Grande 72, Rancho Alamitos 59 --Omar Amaral scored 36 points and David Doan added 12 for visiting Bolsa Grande (14-6, 5-1). John Perrot scored 16 points for Rancho Alamitos (1-18, 1-5).

Los Amigos 61, Pacifica 47 --Chris Small had 22 points and 11 rebounds and Chris Finau had 10 points and 11 rebounds for host Los Amigos (12-9, 6-0). Brandon Schanlin had 12 points for Pacifica (4-2 in league).

Ocean View 64, Tustin 56 --Casey Ortiz had 33 points to lead host Ocean View (12-7, 3-0) over Tustin (6-14, 2-2).

Mesrobian 99, Pacific Christian 43 --Mesrobian (4-2, 2-1) was led by Mikhail Brusalian who scored 37 points and Tigran Grigorian who scored 27.


Liberty League

Windward 49, Oakwood 47 --Steven Leeb scored 13 points for Windward (9-6, 3-4).


Los Padres League

Paso Robles 60, Cabrillo 40 --Josh Ewell scored 18 points and Rodney Timmerman had 11 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks for Paso Robles (12-4, 3-0) over Cabrillo (3-13, 1-2). Josh Ewell scored 18, and Rodney Timmerman 11 for Paso Robles. The Bearcats were up 19-11 out of the first quarter, 36-18 at the half, 51-26 after three. Kori Summers and Thomas Woodard each scored 8 to lead Cabrillo.


Marmonte League

Moorpark 79, Newbury Park 58 --Shawn Fortman had 17 points and nine rebounds for Moorpark (12-8, 3-3). Chris Randle had 36 points for Newbury Park (11-8, 4-1).

Simi Valley 61, Agoura 60 (OT) --Mark Wells hit a jumper with two seconds to give Simi Valley the win. KC Bellefontaine scored 12 points and had 20 rebounds for Simi. Steven Keglevic had 22 points and 11 rebounds for Agoura (5-13, 0-5).


Miramonte League

Wilson 56, Diamond Ranch 54 --Larry Parker hit two free-throws with 19 seconds to play and banked in the game-winner as time expired for Wilson (12-7, 2-1). Dante Holloway scored 19 points for Wilson. Parker added 21. Evan Flagg, Drake Walker and Mike Criscione each scored 10 points for Diamond Ranch (10-7, 1-2).

Charter Oak 68, Los Altos 64

Pomona 59, Garey 46-- Odell Howard scored a game-high 17 points and 15 rebounds to lift the visiting Red Devils (14-5, 3-0) to victory over the Vikings. Pomona's Damarian Woods scored 16 points, including five three-pointers. Woods hit three of those three-pointers during a 20-8 third-quarter run for the Red Devils. Jevon Davis led Garey with 14 points.


Mission League

Harvard-Westlake 82, Alemany 28 Bryce Taylor scored 17 points for Harvard-Westlake (16-3, 5-1).

Mission Valley League

Arroyo 46, Mountain View 42 --Kevin Zheng scored 17 points and 10 rebounds for Arroyo (8-11, 2-1).

Gabrielino 64, El Monte 30--Sean Carey had 22 points for host Gabrielino (10-8, 2-1).

South El Monte 61, Rosemead 57 --Edwin Medina had 17 points to lead host South El Monte. Albert Cardona had 28 points for Rosemead (9-10, 1-2).


Montview League

Bassett 69, Gladstone 62 --Sal Rios scored 21 points for Bassett (3-14, 2-1) at Gladstone. Hector Munoz scored 19 points for Gladstone (3-12, 0-3.)

Duarte 57, La Puente 47 --Hamzah El Amin scored 21 points and Randall Greene had 18 for Duarte(5-10, 2-1). Conrad Olvera scored 19 for La Puente.

Corona Centennial 80, Jurupa Valley 54 --J.R. Reese had 36 points, including seven three-point baskets, to lead visiting Centennial (14-2, 3-0).

Mt. Baldy League

Alta Loma 93, Chaffey 56--Maurice Newton led the Mount Baldy League leaders with 14 points and Adrian Warren and Terrence Hundley added 12 points each in the road rout. Alta Loma (14-5, 3-0) also received 11 points from Benny Tayco. Edward Kilgore led Chaffey (0-3) with 18 points.

Etiwanda 64, Ontario 57--Ontario fell to Mount Baldy League foe Etiwanda 64-57. The decision left the teams in a second-place tie, both with 2-1 marks. Alta Loma sits atop the league standings.  Etiwanda (12-6, 2-1) took control with a 13-4 third-quarter run in which five players scored. The surge was sparked by Tim Houtz, who finished with 17 points, including a three-pointer that put the Eagles ahead 36-29 with 2:30 remaining in the third.  The Eagles led by as many as 12 points following a putback basket by Jacob Johnson midway through the final quarter. Ontario (12-5, 2-1) cut the deficit to 58-53 on a tip-in by David Dunn with two minutes left, but Etiwanda came back with another score by Johnson who finished with 15 points. Teammate D'Ornoir Flax had 14 points. Ontario was led by Desmond Crews with 18 points.  Marcus Mack had 12 for the Jaguars.

Montclair 42, Rancho Cucamonga 41-- Juan Fregoso scored 14 points and 9 rebounds to lead the Cavaliers (4-12, 1-2) to their first league win. Montclair also got nine points from Brian Schaar, all on three-pointers, and eight from Demetris Walk. Saul Jenkins contributed eight rebounds and had four steals. Travis Washington scored 14 points and Dezion Ford had 12 for Rancho Cucamonga.


Northern League

Lompoc 74, Arroyo Grande 55  At Arroyo Grande, Chris Lynwood emerged from a two-game scoring slump to lead the Braves with 23 points.   Anthony English had 21, Joel Smith 19 for Lompoc as the Braves (12-5, 4-0) turned back the Eagles (6-12, 1-3). Up 18-15 out of the first quarter, Lompoc steadily pulled away. The Braves led 40-32 at the half, 54-42 after three. Scott Buhl had 17 points, Sean Hogeboom 14 for AG.

San Luis Obispo 52, Santa Maria 49 -- Santa Maria (8-8, 1-3) beat San Luis Obispo (9-9, 1-3)  in Tiger Gym, picking up its first league win of the season and creating a three-way tie for third place. Santa Maria, San Luis Obispo and Arroyo Grande are each 1-3 after the first round of league play.  The Tigers trailed by six in the first quarter, took an 11-point lead at halftime, then gave the game away in the third quarter. Santa Maria trailed 36-24 midway through the third quarter when it went on a 16-0 run to take a four-point lead going into the final quarter. San Luis Obispo’s Dan Higgins came off the bench to score 10 points, while Ian Jorgeson, Dan Monroe and Jerry Vasquez each finished with eight.  Lopez scored 17 for Santa Maria.


Ocean League

Beverly Hills 70, Hawthorne 64 (2 OT) --Isaac Aftalion scored 21 points for host Beverly Hills (7-11, 1-5), which snapped a five-game losing streak. Michael Washington scored 23 points for Hawthorne (4-12, 1-4).

Compton Centennial 71, Torrance 52--details not available.

El Segundo 51, West Torrance 49 --With 25 seconds remaining in the game, 6-foot-5 Dashawn Strong hit his first three-pointer of the season as the shot clock expired to give El Segundo (17-2, 6-0) the victory at West Torrance. Strong finished with 21 points for El Segundo, which trailed by seven points entering the fourth quarter.

South Torrance 60, Culver City 56--details not available.


Orange League

Brea Olinda 67, Western 33 --Evan Moore had 22 points, 10 in the first quarter, and pulled down 13 rebounds  to help visiting Brea Olinda (3-0 in league), take over sole possesion of first place. Josh Winningham had 16 points for Western (10-7, 2-1).  The Wildcats jumped to a 16-0 lead as the Pioneers committed 10 turnovers in the first quarter. Brea enjoyed a 36-13 advantage at halftime and never trailed by fewer than 20 points in the second half. Brea point guard Eric Giesler, who sat out for long stretches because of foul trouble, was held to four points.

Pacific Coast League

Estancia 67, Costa Mesa 57--Junior Joey Lindquist (6'-7" Jr. F) scored a team-high 22 points and 13 rebounds and Fernando Maldonado made four three-pointers and had 20 points for host Estancia (11-8, 2-1). David Conte had 27 points for Costa Mesa (11-8, 0-3), which had two players foul out including center Jason Millward with 4:04 left in the third quarter. Chad Vakili finished with 11 points on 1 of 12 from three-point shooting for Costa Mesa.  Estancia freshman Carlos Pinto had 13 and 9 rebounds, shooting 5-7 from the field, and Jorge Prado 12.

Northwood 60, Laguna Beach 32 --Drew Terry scored 10 points for host Northwood (3-0 in league), which led, 11-1 at the end of the first quarter. Trevor Lyle scored 10 for Laguna Beach (5-11, 1-2).

University 85, Corona del Mar 58 --David Feistel scored 23 points and sophomores AJ Moskusin and Jon Asnon added 19 points each for visiting University (13-6, 3-0). Brett Matsen scored 16 points for Corona del Mar (4-16, 0-3).


Pacific View League

Oxnard 66, Channel Islands 43 --Jonathan Davis had 15 points and nine assists for Oxnard (16-4, 3-0).

Camarillo 68, Hueneme 52--details not available.


Prep League

Flintridge Prep 57, Webb 46 --Tim Mercer had 13 points and 12 rebounds and Ramses Barden scored 13 for Flintridge Prep (4-10, 3-1). Jordan Bowne scored 12 for Webb (2-9, 0-3).

Rio Hondo League

La Canada 72, Monrovia 32 --Mark Moore had 15 points to lead host La Canada (15-3, 3-0) over Monrovia (10-8, 2-1).  Bryant Markson, Monrovia's two-time Rio Hondo League Most Valuable Player did not play.  Markson, who tore his ACL this past spring and who did not play during the summer, but signed a letter of intent with Utah anyway, reinjured his surgically repaired knee in practice on Monday in practice, and is likely out for the rest of the season. Mark Moore picked off six steals for La Canada and scored 15 points and 7 rebounds.  Steffon Barron was just 4 for 15 from the field for Monrovia and scored a team-high 10 points.  La Canada guards Billy Hofman and Robbie Neyland each had 14 points.

San Gabriel Valley League

Downey 47, Warren 45 --Steve Topete's layup with one second to play lifted Downey (12-6, 3-0). Aaron Perez scored 12 points to lead Downey. Topete scored six. Warren is 11-8, 1-2.

Dominguez 69, Gahr 56 --Vincent Porter scored 15 points for visiting Gahr (7-13, 2-1).

San Joaquin League

Tarbut V'Torah 55, Fairmont Prep 54 (OT) --Steven Eghbali scored a game-high 31 points as Tarbut V'Torah (10-5, 5-1) handed Fairmont its first loss of the season, rallying from a 43-36 fourth-quarter deficit before winning in overtime. Echbali scored six of the Lions' 10 points in overtime and Aaron Hahn added a three-pointer in the extra periord. Will Washington led Fairmont (13-1, 3-1) with 28 points.


Sea View League

Aliso Niguel 61, Irvine 54 (OT)--details not available.

Newport Harbor 43, Laguna Hills 30--Senior point guard Greg Perrine led Newport Harbor (15-5, 3-0) to the win over Laguna Hills (9-11, 0-2).  The 6'-1" point guard, who entered the final quarter without a point, having missed all six field-goal attempts, was 3 for 3 from the field and 3 for 4 from the foul line in the final period. He also made two steals, the second of which allowed the Sailors to pull within 40-38, when he made the first of two free throws after being fouled on the play. He then hit a three-pointer with one second remaining on the clock to give Newport Harbor the win.   Perrine finished with 10 points, all in the fourth quarter.  Tony Melum scored a game-high 16 and 10 rebounds, three steals.  Nadim Pajevic scored 11 points, including 4 of 4 from the foul line in the final quarter, and 10 rebounds. Sierra League

Ayala 65, Nogales 57 --Danny Stephens and Kyle Gregory each had 17 points to lead host Ayala (10-7, 2-1). Gregory added six assists and Justin Davenport contributed 13 points and nine rebounds in the win over Nogales (6-12, 0-3).

Rowland 69, Damien 52 --VaShon Pruitt scored 21 points and Adam Wong added 10 points and seven assists for host Rowland (13-6, 2-1). James Reyes scored 22 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter for Damien (8-10, 1-2).

Diamond Bar 72, West Covina 54 -- Khalif Ford scored 25 points, seven assists and six rebounds in the Brahmas' Sierra League win. Diamond Bar (10-8, 3-0) was also led by Nathan Lyons-Smith with 15 points, nine rebounds and Brandon Papez with 13 points, seven rebounds. Diamond Bar got off to a 13-2 start as Ford had 11 first quarter points, but Jabir Jinna scored all of West Covina's 13 first quarter points to keep his team in the game. The first quarter ended with the Brahmas holding to a mere three-point lead.  Jinna added five more points in the second quarter to finish with 20 for the half. He did not score in the second half.  West Covina (12-7, 1-2) will look to bounce back with a home game against Damien Friday night.


South Coast League

Capistrano Valley 58, El Toro 45 --Matt Sweany scored 16 points and Pete DeCasas added 14 for the visiting Capistrano Valley Cougars. (16-5, 3-1). Darryl Best scored 15 points for the El Toro Chargers (15-5, 3-1).

Dana Hills 44, San Clemente 43 --Mike Mooney scored 16 points for Dana Hills (13-7, 1-3). Matt King scored 18 points for San Clemente (7-14, 0-4).

Mission Viejo 71, Trabuco Hills 57 --Travis Niesen's 25 points led the Diablos (17-2, 4-0) past the host Mustangs (11-9, 1-3). Jake Collins added 13 and Kevin Stacey had 12 for host Mission Viejo.


Southwestern League

Elsinore 58, Chaparral 42 --Travon Keahey and Mack Green each scored 20 points for host Elsinore (15-4, 2-1). Temecula Valley 58, Hemet 55 -- At Temecula Valley, Princeton Joshway's 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists led the Golden Bears (15-6) to a nonleague win. Temecula trailed 38-31 at halftime, but outscored Hemet 9-2 in the third to tie the score heading into the final period. Josh Bomar added 14 points and eight rebounds for Temecula, which plays in league Friday when it visits Elsinore.

Gardena 94, San Pedro 43 --Gardena (8-6, 2-1) was led by Ramone Prescotte who scored 45 points and Isaac Thurman who had 22.  San Pedro (6-10, 0-3) was led by Tykeno Miles with 14 points.

Narbonne 56, Carson 53 --Ekene Ibekwe scored 25 points for Carson (11-6, 2-1), but it wasn't enough as Reggie Simms scored the game-winning three-pointer with 45 seconds left for visiting Narbonne (12-5, 3-0). Uzoma Mmeje (5'-10" Sr. G) led Narbonne with 19 points, 15 in the second half.  With 44 seconds left, Simms buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key after Beto Delgado drew a double team on the wing. The shot gave Narbonne a 53-50 lead and after Carson missed a pair of 3-pointers, Simms sealed the win with a twofree throws. Simms finished with 12 points, five rebounds and three steals. Beto Delgado finished with 10 points, 8 in the fourth quarter.

Washington 86, Banning 79 --Washington Prep (5-10, 1-2) was led by Verbum Dei transfer.Wayne Chamberlain who scored 27 points. Jamaal Lee added 26 points for the Generals.


Northern League

Belmont 68, Lincoln 51 -- The Belmont Sentinels (5-7, 3-0 were led by Raymond Boateng who had a double-double, 22 points and 10 rebounds. Leonel Castaneda also scored 16 points, going 5-8 in three-point attempts. Felipe Sanchez contributed with 13 rebounds.

Eagle Rock 50, Marshall 47 --Billy Puls had 21 points to lead host Eagle Rock (3-13, 1-2) in the win over Marshall (3-15, 1-2) who were led by   John Dayrit with 20 points. Marshall came back from a 12 point deficit to take the lead, but with under 30 seconds, Eagle Rock scored the next four points on two Marshall turnovers.

Fairfax 112, Hamilton 55 --UCLA commit Evan Burns (6'-8" Sr. F) had 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead Fairfax (18-3, 4-1) over Hamilton (11-9, 3-2).  The Lions' Alex Bausley also added 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Fairfax point guard Kevin Bell finished with 15 points and 13 assists. Hamilton was led by Valdes Wright, with 14 points.

Cleveland 71, El Camino Real 56 --Cleveland (10-7, 3-0) was led by Nick Young who scored 22 points in the win over El Camino Real (7-10, 1-2)   Kiley Rodriguez scored 20 for ECR.

Taft 75, Granada Hills 69 --Junior guard Steve Smith made 10 of 20 shots and finished with 30 points for Taft (10-5, 2-1). Smith also had 11 rebounds and six assists. Taft's Nima Javaherian finished with 21, including six threes.
