CIF HS Games: Results & Details From

We're now in the middle of the heart of high school basketball season, with teams competing for league titles and playoff berths, and soon the jockeying for seeding in the respective brackets will start as playoffs approach.  Here's what we know, gathered from reports sent to us from team representatives, coaches, players and parents, as well as what we've been able to gather from local newspapers and websites. If you know of a game that we missed, a score that is unreported, or some details that we're missing, send it in via e-mail.

CIF-Southern Section League Games, Thurs, Jan. 17, 2002

Academy League

Sage Hill 61, Oxford Academy 42-- Junior Mike Fitzhugh shot 11 of 13 from the field (85%) to lead the Lightning with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Sage Hill (5-6, 2-2) junior Erik Williams added14 points, six steals and seven assists, while sophomore Kevin Joyce had 12 points over Oxford (3-9, 0-4). Arrowhead League

Sherman Indian 88, Boys Republic 62-- Senior point guard Leon Ivins scored 28 points and dished out nine assists to help lead Riverside Sherman Indian (3-1, 7-5) to a victory over Boy's Republic (5-1, 9-3) in an Arrowhead League game.  Boys Republic  -- Flanagan 31, Scheiman 7, Acosta 0, Magee 8, Khum 4, Burell 2, Segovia 10. Sherman Indian -- Lee 21, Ivins 28, Blackhawk 5, Baughn 6, Steele 13, Caddo 2, Palone 6, Brenor 7.  Halftime score -- Sherman Indian 50-22. Three-point goals -- Flanagan 3, Scheiman, Lee 5, Ivins 4, Steele 3. Total fouls -- Boys Republic 17, Sherman Indian 13. Fouled out -- none.

CSDR 53, CEDU 48--CSDR (8-7) -- Merino 12, Cayton 11, Amaro 10, Scott 9, Smith 6, Brown 5.  CEDU -- Smith 24, Gamnel 6, Bobble 14, Van Dyke 2, Fowler 2. Halftime score -- CSDR 22-18. Three-point goals -- Merino, Smith, Bobble. Total fouls -- CSDR 12, CEDU 16. Fouled out -- none. Technical fouls -- CEDU coach.


Bay League

Inglewood 53, Leuzinger 50-- This was the first home game for Inglewood and they needed the win after Tuesday's tough loss to Redondo. The teams rescheduled this contest when Inglewood's gym was still being worked on after suffering water damage. The Sentinels (14-4, 4-2) made three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to topple Leuzinger (6-12, 1-5). Ron Ligon and Chris Holloway both had 10 points for Inglewood and Ray Reed and Jason McKinney had nine points each. Dorell Wright had a game-high 16 points and Billy Stone added 11 points for Leuzinger.


Christian League

Loma Linda Academy 88, Calvary Chapel Murrieta 67 --Ryan Prior scored 27 points and had four steals for host Loma Linda Academy (12-4, 4-2). Ryan Evans scored 35 points, including five three-pointers, for Calvary Chapel (1-5 in league).  Calvary Chapel -- Evans 35, Wilkerson 11, Denny 7, Spousta 5, Elder 4, Gausepohl 4, Harvey 1. Loma Linda Academy -- Prior 27, Purdom 14, Stottlemyer 9, Aprecio 9, Valdez 8, Newby 8, Nelson 7, Alexander 4, Boone 2. Halftime score -- Loma Linda Academy 39-29. Three-point goals -- Prior 4, Aprecio 2, Valdez, Nelson, Purdom, Evans 5, Denny, Spousta. Total fouls -- Calvary Chapel 24, Loma Linda Academy 20. Fouled out -- none.


Delphic League

Crossroads (W), Pacific Hills (L)--The final score was not reported in any paper we read, but the LA Times noted that Crossroads won, putting them at 11-1, 4-0, and in possession of first place in the Delphic League.  Crossroads was led by Jordan Rush with 20 points and Robert Locke with 18.


Express League

South Bay Lutheran 84, Orangewood Academy 80(OT)--Chris Graham and Michael Bonner each scored 21 points for South Bay Lutheran (6-2, 4-0). Warren Tamanaha scored 17 points for Orangewood Academy (9-3, 2-1).  After a 3-point basket by visiting Orangewood Academy (9-3, 2-1) sent the game into overtime, Qyntyn Webb scored eight of his 16 in the extra period to lead South Bay Lutheran. Donivyn Zanders finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds


Freedom League

Whitewater 84, Rio Rancho 40--Luis Haywood and Damien Poss combined for 30 first-half points as the Whitewater Saints (14-0, 4-0) jumped to a 26-point halftime lead, then cruised to a Freedom League victory. Corona Rio Rancho (9-5, 4-4) opened the game with a 4-0 lead then got outscored 38-8 to end the half. Poss, a 6-foot-7 guard, finished with a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds. Rio Rancho  -- Dickson 14, Tyler 22, Coleman 2, Spencer 2.  Whitewater  -- Haywood 23, Gebremichael 8, Poss 25, Coleman 15, S. Adams 4, Gray 2, Brown 1, H. Adams 6. Halftime score -- Whitewater 38-12. Three-point goals -- Haywood, Poss 3, Dickson, Tyler 3. Total fouls -- Rio Rancho 21, Whitewater 16. Fouled out -- Spencer. Technical fouls -- Haywood, Dickson.

Wilson Creek 52, Los Pinos 49--Sophomore forward Peter Shoop scored 18 points, pulled down eight boards and got four steals to lead   Wilson Creek (5-8, 2-1) past Lake Elsinore Los Pinos (0-3). Mike Araya added 12 points for the Eagles.  Wilson Creek  -- Powell 8, Schoop 18, Robertson 7, Nero 2, Araya 12, Bader 5.  Los Pinos -- Philshoker 5, King 1, Snow 11, Polman 13, Smith 12, Duty 7.  Halftime score -- Wilson Creek 27-21. Three-point goals -- Shoop, Snow 2, Polman. Total fouls -- Wilson Creek 10, Los Pinos 17. Fouled out -- none. Technical fouls -- Philshoker, Rhoy (LP).


Ivy League

Arlington 49, Moreno Valley 45--Junior forward Leandre Garner scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help lift Riverside Arlington (8-12,  2-2) past Moreno Valley (2-2 in league) in an Ivy League match-up.   Moreno Valley  -- Marshall 5, Nicolsen 0, Barnette 13, Bundy 7, Butler 12, Dillon 2, Crawford 6. Arlington  -- Arellano 3, Holguin 9, Acosta 5, Thomas 2, Lefotu 13, Garner 17.  Halftime score -- Arlington 27-22. Regulation -- 42-42. Three-point goals -- Holguin, Acosta, Garner 3, Bundy 2, Marshall. Total fouls -- Moreno Valley 13, Arlington 10. Fouled out -- none.


Liberty League

Holy Martyrs 50, Buckley 45--Despite 15 points and 10 rebounds from Baron Abdul-Mansour, and senior point guard David Gale's 10 points, 10 steals and 6 assists, Holy Martrys slowed down the game to give them the upset win at Holy Martyrs.  Abdul-Mansour hit two free throws to tie the game with 1.8 seconds remaining, but fouled out in the first 20 seconds of overtime. Buckley had a horrendous shooting night, hitting only 14 of 31 free throw attempt;  Holy Marty's went to the line only 19 times, but made 17.  Buckley is now 9-4, 3-2 in league with 9 more league contests remaining, with the Griffins playing at Viewpoint on Saturday.  Holy Martyrs is 8-8 and 2-5, and will play Oakwood on Saturday.   Buckley and Holy Martyrs meet again on the 22nd at Buckley.   


Metro League

Desert Chapel 90, Lake Arrowhead Christian 54 --Reed Ritchie scored 26 points, including five three-pointers, for Desert Chapel (4-1 in league). Ritchie scored 19 in the first half as Desert Chapel extended the lead to 34 at the half, leading 56-22. Lake Arrowhead Christian had a 19-16 lead with a minute left in the first quarter but was outscored 37-6 the rest of the half.  Dane McCollister scored 15 points and had six  rebounds for Lake Arrowhead Christian (5-7, 3-3). Reed also had 13 rebounds and John Hackbarth and Nathan Law scored 12 each.  Desert Chapel   -- Ennis 7, Sloan 9, Adams 3, Granger 2, P. Hackbarth 8, Goodman 2, Donaldson 2, Hernandez 2, Law 12, J. Hackbarth 12, Ritchie 26, Christoph 5. Lake Arrowhead Christian -- Moody 8, Burgher 3, Conedy 14, Risden 5, Kinsley 9, McCollister 15.  Halftime score -- Desert Chapel 56-22. Three-point goals -- Ritchie 5, J. Hackbarth 2, Adams, Ennis, McCollister, Kinsley, Burgher. Total fouls -- Desert Chapel 18, Lake Arrowhead Christian 8. Fouled out -- Hernandez.

California Lutheran 54, Christian Center 36--Sophomore forward Robert Betts scored 16 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to help lead Wildomar California Lutheran (2-11,  2-1) past Colton Christian Center Academy in a Metro League match-up.  Cal Lutheran  -- Betts 16, Neugahr 14, Campbell 12, Coppick 4, Miller 0, Barnes 4, Ward 2, Terrian 2.  Christian Center -- Patel 13, Gutierrez 7, Hernandez 4, Travis 10, Adams 2. Halftime score -- Cal Lutheran 32-19. Three-point goals -- Patel, Travis 2, Gutierrez, Hernandez. Total fouls -- Cal Lutheran 8, Christian Center 10. Fouled out -- none.


Mission League

Chaminade 77, St. Francis 57 --Dion Cook scored 24 points and had 18 rebounds for Chaminade (15-4, 4-1).


San Joaquin League

Tarbut V'Torah 62, Saddleback Valley Christian 26 --Geoff Keith scored 27 points and added five assists for host Tarbut V'Torah (11-5, 6-1).


Valley League

San Gabriel Academy 68, Summit View 48 -- San Gabriel Academy (12-4, 8-0) remained unbeaten in league as Jason Killebrew scored  a team-high 18 points and senior center Michael Tomas had six points and nine rebounds. Jeff Danon scored 25 points for Summit View.


Victory League

Mesa Grande Academy 42, Calvary Chapel 32 --Despite senior forward Josh Williford's 13-point and 22-rebound game, Moreno Valley Calvary Chapel was unable to defeat Calimesa Mesa Grande in a Victory League match-up. Calvary Chapel (0-4, 0-6) -- Williford 13, Jaimez 3, Crane 8, Leroy 0, Gomez 0, Schirner 6, Philpot 2. Mesa Grande (1-4 overall) -- Libby 6, Covines 4, Morrehead 3, Knight 7, Bristol 0, Granado 12, Sylvestor 10.  Halftime score -- 19-19. Three-point goals -- Granado 2. Total fouls -- Calvary Chapel 6, Mesa Grande 14. Fouled out -- none.


Westside League

Hillcrest Christian 75, Santa Clarita Christian 64--Alex Martino recorded 25 points, seven rebounds and six assists for Hillcrest Christian (10-5, 6-1). Daniel Duncan scored 22 points for visiting Santa Clarita Christian (11-5, 5-1).

CIF-Southern Section Non-League Games, Thurs., Jan. 17, 2002

Palm Valley 44, Salton City West Shores (San Diego CIF) 31 --Sean Krubinski scored 18 points for visiting Palm Valley (3-6). Colin Kirkpatrick added 13 for Palm Valley.

Shalhevet 87, Southwestern Academy 61 --Erez Gargir led Shahevet (5-6) with 21 points. Josh Pollick scored 17 (five three pointers) and Stephan Bouskila finished with 12 and 9 rebounds. Shalhevet turned a 12-point halftime lead into a 27-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

Woodcrest Christian 61, Bloomington Christian 34-- Senior forward Cory Wells picked up a double-double, scoring 29 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, as Woodcrest Christian defeats Bloomington Christian in a non-league game.   Bloomington Christian (5-9) -- Jones 11, Hawkins 2, Brown 6, Mendoza 0, Ziegler 11, Bernier 4. Woodcrest Christian (9-7) -- Wells 29, Hall 2, Lacey 12, Reyes 4, Wagner 9, Deering 5.  Halftime score -- Woodcrest Christian 31-22. Three-point goals -- Wells 2, Lacey 4, Deering. Total fouls -- Bloomington Christian 12, Woodcrest Christian 8. Fouled out -- none.

LA City Section League Games, Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002

Magnet League

Bravo Medical Magnet 64, Downtown Business Magnet 48-- Brandon Turner scored 28 points for Bravo (7-11, 3-1).

Foshay 68, Valley Alternative 48 --Brandon Moody scored 21 for points for Foshay (3-8, 2-2).

LACES 75, Elizabeth Street 50-- Ben Braziel had 28 points and six steals and Aaron Burrus had 20 points and 17 rebounds for LACES (5-12, 4-0).

Middle College 53, USC-MAST 50--Daveon Fleming scored 21 points for Middle College (2-1, 2-1).


Western League

Westchester 86, University 48-- Scott Cutley scored 19 points and 8 rebounds for Westchester (16-1, 6-0), which led by 31 points at the half on the road at Univerity (13-7, 1-5).  Ruben Boykin scored 20 points to lead University. Trevor Ariza had 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks for Westchester and Keith Everage had 15 points and Ashanti Cook had 10 points and five assists.
