CIF HS Games: Results & Details From
Monday, 1/21/02--(Jan. 22, 2002)

Here's what we know from Monday's games (other than the Dream Classic games played Monday at APU, which we've already reported on) gathered from reports sent to us from team representatives, coaches, players and parents, as well as what we've been able to gather from local newspapers and websites. If you know of a game that we missed, a score that is unreported, or some details that we're missing, send it in via e-mail.

CIF-Southern Section League Games, Monday, Jan. 21, 2002

Bay League

Inglewood 62, Peninsula 57--This was played as a part of the Dream Classic games.


Camino Real League

Verbum Dei 67, Mary Star 19 --We're not quite sure how Verb managed to pull off this feat, but they also played this league contest following their win over Calvary Chapel Downey at the Dream Classic earlier in the day.


Harbor League

Price 66, Rolling Hills Prep 64--Another game that was played as a part of the Dream Classic games.


Mt. Baldy League

Etiwanda 67, Rancho Cucamonga 40 --Etiwanda (4-1, 14-6) was led by Jacob Johnson who finished with 24 points and nine rebounds, while teammates D’Ornoir Flax and David Carter each scored 13 points.

Alta Loma 72, Ontario 52 --The Alta Loma Braves (16-5, 5-0) held the Ontario Jaguars to single digit scoring in the second and third quarters. Seniior guard Terrance Hundley led Alta Loma with 20 points and Maurice Newton added 14. Terrell Cade had eight points and 11 rebounds. Desmond Crews led Ontario (12-7, 2-3) with 20 points.


Victory League

Desert Christian Bermuda Dunes 51, Redlands Junior Academy 37--Redlands outscored Desert Christian 14-7 in the third quarter and were ahead 32-30 going into the fourth but Desert Christian began the final period on a 15-0 run to take the lead and the game. Tim Smith led Desert Christian with 24 points and 13 rebounds and teammate Richie Mangus added 11 points.

CIF-Southern Section Non-League & Intersectional Games, Monday., Jan 21, 2002

Twenty Nine Palms 61, Granite Hills 49 --Twentynine Palms (12-6) was led by Bryan Cromwell's (5'-9" Jr. G) 21 points including three three-pointers,  and teammate Dynamite Matthews (6'-5" Jr. F) had 16 points, 14 rebounds and five steals.   Teammate Ken Randle (6'-5" Sr. F) finished with 8 points, 10 rebounds.   Granite Hills (5-13) was led by Ramell Mitchell with 16 points.


All (or almost all) of the games played yesterday were part of one of two MLK Holiday classics, either the Dream Classic at Azusa Pacific University or the Riverside MLK Classic at MLK High School in Riverside. 

Riverside MLK Games

Cathedral City 83, Ramona 64 --Thomas Shewmake had 24 points (including grabbing his 1,000th career rebound, on 18 rebounds in the game) for Cathedral City (14-6, 6-1) in the Riverside Martin Luther King  Classic at MLK HS. According to the Desert Sun newspaper, Shewmake is the first player at Cathedral City to score over 1,000 points and get more than 1,000 rebounds.  But back to the game....Nick Lee had 12 points and Austin Oglesby scored 11 for the Cat City. 

Murrieta Valley 74,  Bloomington 50--details not reported.

Ayala 72, Pacific 50 --Ayala (12-8) was led by Kyle Gregory who scored 20 points.

Glendora 71, Temescal Canyon 63 --Larry Monroe scored 27 points for Glendora (19-1). Josh Garrett had 28 points for Temescal Canyon (12-8). Mike Mehanna added another 15 points for Glendora, while Spencer Foster had six assists. 

Riverside ML King 64,  Elsinore 63 -- King was led by Marvin Lea, who scored 26 points, 8 assists, five rebounds and three steals, including the 2,000th point in his career early in the fourth quarter (the game was stopped briefly to award him the game ball in recognition of his scoring record). The win meant a split for Elsinor, which beat King at the Murrieta Valley Tournament in December.  King's Leon Rosborough finished with 11 points.


Dream Classic Games

Verbum Dei 71, Downey Calvary Chapel 63

Mission Viejo 78, Woodbridge 61

Pasadena 62, Los Altos 39
