CIF HS Games: Results & Details From
Saturday 1/26/02--(Jan. 27, 2002)

Here's what we know about Saturday's games gathered from reports sent to us from team representatives, coaches, players and parents, as well as what we've been able to gather from local newspapers and websites. If you know of a game that we missed, a score that is unreported, or some details that we're missing, send it in via e-mail.

CIF-Southern Section League Games, Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002

Alpha League

L.A. Baptist 55, Marshall Fundamental 47-- L.A. Baptist (5-14, 2-3) picked up the win over Marshall (0-5 in league) behind Sheldon Sheehi's 17 points and Andrew Svendsen's 14. Marshall got 11 points from John Sanders.

Village Christian 79, Paraclete 75 --Village Christian (8-11, 3-2) defeated Paraclete (3-1 in league) behind Jacob Briggs' 21 points and 11 rebounds and Jimmy Halley's 18 points and 11 rebounds.  Kyle Whitten added 17 points and six assists for Village Christian, while Matt Marquez and Tommy Caton finished with 17 points each for Paraclete in the loss.


Baseline League

Chino 76, Don Lugo 61 --Chino (10-10, 3-3) kept its playoff hopes alive with an important win over Don Lugo (7-13, 0-6).  Chino got a game-high 27 points from Robert White while teammate Chad Page had 10 rebounds. Don Lugo was led by John Synder with 23 points. John Dominguez added 17 for Chino, including five 3-pointers


Delphic League

Pacific Hills 65, Whitney 32--details not available. 


Desert Mountain League

Lone Pine 92, Silver Valley 62 --Lone Pine was led by Ausin Wing and Randall Barbour, who each scored 24 points.

Mammoth 82, Lucerne Valley 22 --details not available.


Heritage League

Pilgrim 74, First Lutheran 36 --Pilgrim (2-5, 2-3) picked up a rare win, playing a short schedule behind Sean Cunningham's 36 points.  Ricky Collins added 28 for Pilgrim.


Hi-Lo League

Big Pine 49, Owens Valley 47 --Host Big Pine (10-6, 6-0) was led by Brandon Majors' 18 points and 21 rebounds in the win over visiting Owens Valley.  Big Pine led by as many 19 points, but Owens Valley came back to cut the lead to two with 8 seconds to play and Big Pine escaped by the narrowest of margins with the win.

Trona 64, Baker Valley 25 --Trona (10-6, 5-0) was led by Cody Corrion with 15 points and by Jacob Rivera with11 points to stay within a 1/2 game of first place behind Big Pine.  Baker Valley is 0-5 in league.


Liberty League

Buckley 75, Avalon 58 -- Playing at Campbell Hall's gym on Saturday, the visiting Buckley Griffins (13-5, 7-2) defeated host Avalon (5-13, 4-7).  The Griffins were led by senior point guard David Gale who scored 21 points, nine assists and nine steals and Baron Abdul-Mansour had 19 points and 12 rebounds. Gale score the first 11 points of the game (three consecutive three pointers and two free throws on the first four possessions of the game), and the Griffins led 39-26 at the half, outscoring the Lancers 18-8 in the second quarter. Gale also hit a half-court three-pointer at the buzzer at the end of the third quarter, but the shot was waved off by one ref after being called good by the other official;  Gale followed that shot with a dunk on a fast break early in the fourth quarter.  Buckley pulled all of its starters with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Buckley (75)--Gale 21, Baron Abdul-Mansour 19, Shaun Hillman 1, Michael Broukhim 2, Riley Scannell 8, Nick Brar 9, Amish Tolia 5, Alex Marshall 5, Tristan Seisa 5.  Avalon (58)--Adam Nelson 9, J. Hernandez 14, C. Bogard 1, K. Harrell 8, S. Van 3, C. Cameron 13, P. Lopez 10. Buckley--21 18  13  23--75;  Avalon--18  8   9  23--58.


Metro League

Desert Chapel 56, Riverside Christian 45 --Desert Chapel (7-1 in league) was led by Mike Sloan (5'-10" PG) who scored 14 points in the win over visiting Riverside Christian (10-3, 7-1) which got 17 points and 8 rebounds from Ray Manning. Guard Paul Hackbarth and forward Reid Ritchie each added 13 points for Desert Chapel.

Upland Christian 58, California Lutheran 57 --Upland Christian (14-6, 8-2) was led by 6-4" junior forward Nick Roberds who scored a game-high 37 points, including 24 in the second half.  Roberds also had 8 rebounds and two steals. Taylor Unzicker had 7 for the Eagles. Roberds hit a jumper with 30 seconds left to give Upland Christian the one point advantage and the final margin of victory. California Lutheran (3-4)   got a shot off after Roberds' basket, but it fell short and the Eagles got the rebound and ran out the clock.


Mission League

Chaminade 69, Notre Dame 57 --Visiting Chaminade (17-5, 6-2) was led by Marcus Everett, Adrian Aye-Darko, Kevin Hiraiwa and Jerred Link who each scored 12 points.   Freshman BeeWee Vallesteros finished with 16 points to lead host Notre Dame (7-15, 3-5) in the loss.

Crespi 78, St. Francis 65 --Senior guard Allan Ellis scored 27 points and 12 rebounds and junior Dino Fekaris finished with 17 points for Crespi (10-11, 4-4) as St. Francis (5-13, 0-8) failed again to collect its first league win of the season.   Chris Miller scored 21 points and Scott Sartoris had 17 points for St. Francis.

Loyola 73, Harvard-Westlake 55-- Loyola (17-3, 6-1) all but assured itself of the Mission League title if they don't slip in the next two weeks, by defeating Harvard-Westlake last night at a packed Loyola gym. Harvard Westlake (18-4, 6-2), lost earlier in the season to Crespi and now has one more league loss to the Cubs, with whom they split this season.  The Cubs were led by sophomore point guard Vincent Oliver's 20 points,  and junior Omar Wilkes who finished with 19 points. Teammate Josh-Flynn Brown added 12 points.  Harvard-Westlake trailed by 10 at the half, in part due to Oliver scoring 13 of his 20, including a three-pointer right before the break. While the Wolverines tried to play catch-up, they never got closer than six in the second half.   Harvard-Westlake was led by sophomore guard Bryce Taylor who finished with 23 points and Harris Chung who finished with 13 points.


Prep League

Flintridge Prep 45, Pasadena Poly 40 --Flintridge Prep (7-11, 5-1) was led by Connor O'Byrne who scored 14 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter, as Flintridge outscored Pasadena Poly (4-16, 0-5) 20-5 to come back from a 10-deficit.  Flintridge also got 12 points and 13 rebounds from Tim Mercer and 12 points from Ramses Barden. Kevin Kawachi of Poly scored 12 points.


South Coast League

Capistrano Valley 58, San Clemente 44 --Host Capo Valley (19-5, 6-1) was led by Pete Decasas who scored 19 points and Matt Sweany who had 18 in the win over the San Clemente Tritons, who were led by sophomore Marcus Blackshire with 15 points.


Valley League

Valley Torah 60, Glendale Adventist 45 --Yossi Goldman had 20 points, 16 rebounds, eight assists and four steals, and Yair Katz scored 15 points for Valley Torah (11-6, 6-3). J.J. Osborne scored 19 points for Glendale Adventist.

Southwest Adventist Tournament
@ Southwest Adventist University, Texas

San Gabriel Adventist 67, Atlanta (Ga.) Adventist 63 --Jason Killebrew's 28 points helped San Gabriel (17-5) capture third place in the tournament after losing in the semifinals to a team from Forest Lake, Florida, 92-54. All-tournament selection Chris Ostos had 18 as the Eagles finished the tournament with a 4-1 record.  Ostos scored 118 points in San Gabriel Academy's five games, averaging 23.6 ppg.


Channel Islands 55, Ventuar 30-- Channel Islands (55) -- Jones 13, Avila 12, Tamayo 9, Burton 2, Merton 5, Ecoffe 7, Diaz 7.  Ventura (30) -- Salmons 12, Shaw 1, Dixon 9, Wagner 4, Campbell 4. Channel Islands 14 11 18 12--55 Ventura 6 9 6 9--30 3-Point goals -- C.I. 4 (Jones 1, Avila 2, Diaz 1), Ventura 3 (Dixon 2, Wagner 1). Fouled out -- None. Rebounds -- C.I. 31, Ventura 27 (Campbell 7). Assists -- Ventura 6. Total fouls -- C.I. 18, Ventura 20.

Laguna Blanca 57, Grace Brethren 54 --Laguna Blanca (8-9) was led by freshman Jelani Hicks with 19 points, including 5-7 shooting from three point range, and 4-4 from the line. Grace Brethren (9-9) was led by Eric Durso with 25 points and 15 rebounds.   Ryan Jeffrey and Andy Nelson combined for 21 rebounds for Laguna Blanca.   LB--Geeb 10, Haan 7, Hicks 19, Jeffrey 4, Jones 4, Kaufman 7, Nelson 4, Vidor 2. Total 57. GB-- Marme 9, Padot 5, Durso 23, Mathieu 7, Beatty 8, Soderlund 2. Total 54. Laguna Blanca --12 15 13 16 -- 57 Grace Brethren--14 16 12 12 -- 54  3-point goals--LB 9 (Geeb 2, Haan 1, Hicks 5, Kaufman 1), GB 3 (Padot 1, Durso 2). Fouled out--Padot.

Ocean View 76, Orange Lutheran 58 --Ocean View (15-7) was led by Matt Hatch with 28 points and 11 rebounds and teammate Casey Ortiz added 20 points.

Upland 66, Mission Prep (CIF Central) 33--Jay Rach scored 13 points and Julius Coleman added 10 for Upland (17-5) in the win over Mission Prep.

Yeshiva 55, Shalhevet 47 --Rafi Ryzman led Yeshiva (13-4) with 16 points over Shalhevet.

LA City Section League  Games, Friday Jan. 25, 2002

Sylmar 74, Taft 71-- Senior forward Louis Darby of Sylmar inbounded the ball to Frank Robinson with two seconds left. Robinson passed the ball back and Darby hit a three-pointer to break a 71-71 deadlock at the buzzer as host Sylmar won the non-league contest. Sylmar trailed by as much as 13 with under 5 minutes to play, and managed to overcome a 35-point performance from Taft junior guard Steve Smith. Sylmar's Fernando Barreda finished with 12 points off the bench before fouling out late in the fourth quarter.  Sylmar had possession with six seconds to play, but Darby got tied up on the ground after missing a layup.  Sylmar got possession back on the alternating possession arrow with just two seconds remaining.
