CIF HS Games: Results & Details From
Thursday 1/31/02--(Feb. 1, 2002)

We are pulling into the home stretch, the next-to last week of regular season games before the playoffs begin.  Here's what we know about Thursday's games gathered from reports sent to us from team representatives, coaches, players and parents, as well as what we've been able to gather from local newspapers and websites. If you know of a game that we missed, a score that is unreported, or some details that we're missing, send it in via e-mail.

CIF-Southern Section League Games, Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002

American League

Summit View West 52, Bridges 41 --Summit View West (1-15, 1-6) earned its first win of the year behind Michael Mueller's 29 points. Ebin Graham grabbed 21 rebounds and Bryant Lagave recorded nine steals for the one-year-old school.


Arrowhead League

La Sierra Academy 70, Ambassador Christian 41 --Ambassador Christian (4-8, 7-12) -- Hardy 4, Martin 0, Miden 16, Esquirel 0, Orogea 0, Guzman 10, Monteroza 4, Jorge 4, Gilmore 3. La Sierra Academy (10-1, 13-6) -- Nigroni 5, Moya 8, Bullon 21, Verde 7, Barber 13, Trinidad 2, Makboul 5, Gutierrez 7, Beardon 2. Halftime score -- La Sierra Academy 45-18. Three-point goals -- Miden, Gilmore, Moya, Bullon, Verde, Gutierrez, Barber. Total fouls -- Ambassador Christian 18, La Sierra Academy 12. Fouled out -- none.


Camino Real League

Don Bosco 43, Mary Star 42 --Jack Martinez (undoubtedly no relation to the other Jack Martinez from Artesia, who is now playing pro ball in the Dominican, by the way....)scored 12 points for Don Bosco, and hit a three-pointer with two minutes to play in the game which turned out to be the last shot in the contest and the game-winning shot.  Jeff Fiamengo led Mary Star with 15 points.


Christian League

Arrowhead Christian 59, Loma Linda 58 (OT) --Arrowhead Christian (14-6, 5-4) was led by Jacob Goltry's 29 points, and Goltry also hit a key free-throw with five seconds to play in overtime, which turned out to be the game-winning shot.  Chris Purdom scored 27 points for Loma Linda (15-5, 7-3).

Ontario Christian 73, Calvary Chapel Redlands 61 --Ontario Christian (17-5, 7-3) center Travis Hoekstra scored 24 points and had 10 assists and seven rebounds. The Knights remained in contention for a Christian League title with the seniors' night victory. Ontario Christian's next two games are on the road, at defending league champion Arrowhead Christian Academy on Saturday and at league-leading Loma Linda Academy on Tuesday. Greg Talen scored 12 points and added six assists against Calvary Chapel and Don Vanden Berg contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds, nine on offense.

Western Christian 59, Woodcrest Christian 48 -- The Lancers, attempting to repeat as league champions, held the Woodcrest Royals (5-5, 10-11) to eight points in the fourth quarter.  Senior guard Ethan Chin scored a team-high 14 points and Blake Allison added 12 for Western Christian (16-7, 7-2). Western Christian -- S. Chin 0, E. Chin 13, B. Allison 12, Rodriguez 11, Booher 4, Higgins 2, Tussy 4, Sturgeon 2, A. Allison 11.  Woodcrest Christian  -- Wells 8, Hall 10, Lacey 15, Reyes 11, Wagner 2, Rosset 2. Halftime score -- Western Christian 28-19. Three-point goals -- Hall 2, Lacey 5, Reyes 3, E. Chin 3, Rodriguez 2. Total fouls -- Western Christian 12, Woodcrest Christian 19. Fouled out -- Wells. Technical fouls -- E. Chin, Lacey.


Coastal Valley League

Valley Christian 63, North County Christian 52 --North County Christian (6-14, 3-3) was led by Luke Sexton who scored 19 points.


Del Rio League

California 73, Santa Fe 59 --The visiting California Condors held the Santa Fe Chiefs to 13 points in the third period. California's Matt Amido had a game-high 25 points and Jerrad Nutt had 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Pioneer 46, La Serna 39 --Pioneer (4-17, 3-5) defeated La Serna (12-13, 5-3) for the first time in 18 years.  Pioneer got 12 points from Carlos Martinez.  Three players reached double-figures for the Titans, and in addition to Martinez, Ricky Reyes had 11 and David Ochoa finished with 10.

Whittier 77, El Rancho 49-- Michael Hernandez came off the bench to score 29 points and Danny Carlos added scored 23 as Whittier (18-5, 6-2) clinched a share of the Del Rio League title with the win over the host El Rancho Dons (11-12, 6-2). El Rancho committed 24 turnovers and only shooting 33% from the field.   Whittier broke out to a 17-8 first quarter lead and led 37-16 at halftime.  El Rancho was led by Al Santa Cruz with 15 points and Daniel Carrera with 10.


Delphic League

Campbell Hall 57, Whitney 37 --Senior shooting guard Matt Llewellyn scored 16 points and junior Brandon Robnett had 14 points for the Campbell Hall Vikings (9-13, 3-4) in the win over Whitney (9-13, 0-8).


Express League

Orangewood Academy 97, Southland Christian 44--Orangewood Academy (11-3, 5-1) was led by Travis Melin who hit nine three-point baskets, including six in the third quarter, to finish with 29 points.

South Bay Lutheran 63, Eastside Christian 54 --Host South Bay Lutheran (10-2, 8-0) remained unbeaten and in firm control of the league title as Chris Graham scored 22 points and added six steals.  O'Neal Cousins scored 24 points for Eastside Christian (6-13, 5-3) in the loss. Qyntyn Webb  added 16 points for Eastside.


Freedom League

Rio Contiguo 71, South Bay 17 --L. Beazley 17 scored points for Rio Contiguo.

Whitewater 90, Los Pinos 69 --details not available.

Wilson Creek 59, Twin Pines 41 -- Sophomore 6-1 forward Peter Schoop scored 15 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and had four assists as the visiting Eagles (3-3, 6-12) defeated the Bobcats in a Freedom League game. Freshman Tobias Robertson added 14 points, and 5-6 guard Mike Araya had seven steals for the Eagles.


Heritage League

Grace Brethren 65, Pilgrim 56 --Eric Durso scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for host Grace Brethren (11-9, 6-1), while Cunningham scored 30 points for Pilgrim.   Evan Marme scored 15 points while Jon Taggert and Josh Mathieu had 10 each for Grace Brethren.


High Desert League

Kern Valley 96, Vasquez 45 --Kern Valley (11-9, 4-6) got 25 points from Jordan Hughes, and 13 rebounds and eight steals, while Kyle Ludington of Vasquez (2-15, 1-9) scored 19 points.

Rosamond 72, Mojave 50 --Brandon Murray scored 25 points and had 15 rebounds for Rosamond (18-4, 10-0). L.D. Cox scored 24 points for Mojave (11-9, 7-3).


International League

Southwestern Academy 87, Pacific Christian 21 --details not available.


Ivy League

Riverside Poly 39, Arlington 37 --Riverside Poly (8-0 in league) -- Renneson 5, Bash 3, Guffey 3, Lopez 13, Venalt 15.  Arlington (3-5, 9-15) -- Simon 16, Garner 9, Holguin 6, Acosta 3, Orduno 1, Lefotu 2. Halftime score -- Riverside Poly 17-16. Three-point goals -- Acosta, Garner, Guffey. Total fouls -- Arlington 13, Riverside Poly 8. Fouled out -- none.


Metro League

Cal Lutheran 64, Lake Arrowhead Christian 47 --details not available

Desert Chapel 113, Calvary Chapel Redlands 26--Reed Ritchey scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Desert Chapel to a 113-26 victory over Calvary Chapel Redlands.  Seven Eagles scored in double figures during the Metro League victory.  The starting five played the first and third quarters for Desert Chapel (14-3, 9-1) and ten players saw action. The Eagles, tied for first in league and holding the tiebreaker advantage, play California Lutheran Saturday at Perris High School.

Riverside Christian 81, Cornerstone Christian Wildomar 43 --Ryan Klixx scored 26 points, including six three-pointers, and Ray Manning added 20 points, 12 rebounds and five steals for visiting Riverside Christian (12-3, 9-1). Joshua Paul scored 28 points and had 12 rebounds for Cornerstone Christian Wildomar (8-11, 4-7).   Riverside Christian -- Ayers 10, Bowlus 10, Manning 20, Williams 8, Klix 26, Collins 4, Thompson 8, LaFarga 2. Cornerstone Christian -- C.Sheele 4, Johns 10, Tretheway 0, R.Sheele 1, Paul 28. Halftime score -- Riverside Christian 52-20. Three-point goals -- Klix 6, Thompson 2, Johns 2, Paul. Total fouls -- Riverside Christian 13, Cornerstone Christian 6. Fouled out -- none.


Mission League

Crespi 67, Alemany 56 --Senior point guard Allan Ellis had 27 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds for Crespi (11-12, 5-5) in the win over Alemany (4-16, 2-7) which was led by Ian Edwards who scored 13 points.

Loyola 70, Chaminade 57 --Josh Flynn-Brown scored 21 points, Omar Wilkes added 16 and Chris Rucker had 15 for Loyola (19-3, 8-1) in the win at home over Chaminade (18-6, 6-3), which was outscored 26-14, in the second quarter and built a 39-24 halftime lead.  Chaminade got as close as six points, but was never able to take the lead.

Harvard-Westlake 88, St. Francis 70 --Sophomore Bryce Taylor scored 15 of his 36 points in the third quarter and senior point guard Craig Weinstein finished with 12 points and four assists for the Harvard-Westlake Wolverines (18-4, 7-2) in the win over St. Francis, which was led by Matt Gaybr who had 15 points and six rebounds.


Mojave River League

Apple Valley 56, Rim of the World 53 --Jamal Holden (6'-3" Sr. G) scored a game-high 17 points as Apple Valley (18-3, 5-1) took sole possession of first place in league. Rim of the World (10-12, 4-2) was led by Kurt Oliver with 13 points.  Senior 6-0 forward Jimmy Bailey had 15 points and nine rebounds for the Apple Valley Sun Devils


Omega League

San Fernando Academy 51, Ventura County Christian 45-- At Ventura County Christian, Nathan Sevilla scored 24 points while Chris Estay added 17 for San Fernando Academy in the win over Ventura County Christian (5-5, 5-2), which was led by Will Hernandez who scored 28 points and Michael Alvarez who added 11. 


Prep League

Rio Hondo Prep 52, Masada 40--Visiting Rio Hondo Prep was led by Devon Drain who scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Kares past the Knights. Rio Hondo Prep overcame an early five-point deficit with a 22-5 second quarter.


San Joaquin League

Fairmont Prep 69, Acaciawood 30 --Saul Fall scored 16 points and Will Washington had 15 for Fairmont Prep (18-1, 8-1) in the win over Acaciawood (8-9, 4-5).

Tarbut v'Torah 41, Saddleback Valley Christian 25 --Geoff Keith finished with a game-high 20 points for Tarbut v'Torah (14-6, 8-2) in the win over Saddleback Valley Christian (1-12, 1-9).


South Coast League

Trabuco Hills 59, Dana Hills 51 --Aaron Tudor scored 18 points for Trabuco Hills (14-10, 4-4). Lorca Ghancari scored 14 points for Dana Hills (13-11, 1-7).


Valley League

Summit View 57, Coutin 53 --visiting Summit View (4-13, 2-8) was led by Rashad Lee's 29 points, including shooting 4-5 from the line in the final two minutes.  Chris Gutierrez finished with 29 points for Coutin (1-12, 0-10).

Valley Torah 67, Glendale Adventist 60 --Valley Torah (12-6, 7-3) was led by Yossi Goldman with 23 points, Yair Katz'  12 points, 10 rebounds and six steals, and Yaniv Gabay's 12 points and seven assists . Alfred Hampton scored 22 points for Glendale Adventist.


Westside League

Milken 51, Highland Hall 34 --Matt Gurvitz scored 14 points for Milken (11-9, 7-3). No other details were available.

Santa Clarita Christian 59, Hillcrest Christian Thousand Oaks 34 --Daniel Duncan scored 22 points for Santa Clarita Christian (14-5, 8-1).

West L.A. Baptist 75, West Valley Christian 61 --Tomas Johnson scored a game-high 29 points and 10 rebounds for West L.A. Baptist (9-5, 7-3). Ryan Meloncon scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Wilson scored 20 points for West Valley Christian.

Baptist Christian 99, Lancaster Bethel Christian 54 --details not available

Mesrobian 62, Renaissance 50 --Mesrobian (8-2) got 25 points from Mikhail Bursalian and Tigran Grigorian also scored 25.

Palm Valley 54, Academy for Academic Excellence 53 --Dustin Mathis had 22 points and 11 rebounds for AAE (7-6 overall). Palm Valley is 6-8 overall.

Price 98, Lighthouse Christian 27 --All 10 players scored for host Price (22-4, 6-0), led by Kalief Washington with 16 points

Bravo 66, Elizabeth St. 47--Brandon Turner scored 26 points for Bravo (11-1. 7-1).

Foshay 72, LACES 66 --Kryston Tillett scored 34 points for Foshay (6-10, 5-3).

USC-MAST 70, Marlton 35 --Tyrone Johnson had 20 points and seven steals for host USC-MAST (6-11, 3-3).


Western League

Fairfax 89, University 54 --Fairfax (8-1 in league) was led by Evan Burns with 28 points and 18 rebounds and Jahsha Bluntt with 20 points and 13 rebounds.  Ruben Boykin scored 31 points and 12 rebounds for University (15-10, 3-7).
