LA City Section "Invitational Bracket":
First Round Boys Matchups--(Feb. 9, 2001)

The LA City Section Seeding Committee met today at Manual Arts HS, and they've put together not only the City Championship bracket (the top 16 teams overall) but also the "Invitational" bracket, which is sort of like the consolation tournament, featuring the next best 16 teams from across the City Section.

Unlike the City Championship bracket, this one has pretty good regional balance, with good representation from all over the LA City Section.   It is of more than passing interest that with both brackets combined (City & Invitational) every team from the Coliseum League is represented, and in the Invitational bracket Manual Arts and Jefferson round out that league's selections.    Likewise, in both brackets combined, every team from the Western League with the exception of Venice is also represented, and the Invitational has Hamilton, Los Angeles, and UniversityThe Sunset Six gets three teams in the playoffs, with only North Hollywood in the City Championship, while Grant and Poly are in the Invitational bracket.   The West Valley League has two in the City Championship (Taft & Cleveland) while three more from that league are in the Invitational (Granada Hills, Kennedy & Chatsworth).   King-Drew is the lone Magnet Conference representative in the Invitational, and in case someone forgets about this little rule, the City Section poobahs have determined that this is as good as it will get ever for any Magnet Conference team, because they aren't eligible for post-season play in the "Championship" bracket.

Anyway, here are the first round matchups along with what the rest of the bracket will look like. If you need more information about the LA City Section playoffs, we've reprinted the entire LA City Section Playoff bulletin (below) for the premliminary rounds.   If you still need more info than that, check out the LA City Section's own website (look under "sports" because you won't find a thing under "playoffs").

The first round will be next Friday, February 15.  Games are all @ 7:30 p.m. and the host will be the higher seeded team.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Seeding for the All-City Championships

The Seeding Committee for the All-City Basketball Championships will be done by a committee made up of the following: 

  • two members of IAC

  • one representative from each League 

  • one member at large 

  • and a representative of the Athletics Office  

NO OTHER COACHES WILL BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SEEDING PROCESS.  The Seeding Committee will determine the top sixteen teams, which will be placed in the City playoffs and the next sixteen teams, which will be placed in the Invitational playoffs.  The meeting will be held Saturday, February 10, 2001, at Manual Arts High School in Wilson Hall.  The meeting will begin at 8:00 a.m.  The boys and girls seeding meetings will be conducted in separate rooms.

 

SELECTION OF TEAMS FOR BOTH INVITATIONAL AND CITY

 

The league champion, with the exception of the Magnet League, will receive an automatic berth into the City Championship playoffs.  If there is a tie(s) for league champion, only one team from the league will receive the automatic berth.  This team will be determined by using the established tie-breaking procedures for that sport.  The remaining first place teams (Co-champions) will receive automatic qualification to the playoffs.  The higher seeded team will be designated as the Home team throughout the playoffs.

 

TIE BREAKING PROCEDURES

Tie-breaking criteria for seeding purposes (in this order):

a.                Head to head competition

b.                Flip of a coin

 

THERE WILL BE NO GAMES PLAYED TO BREAK A TIE.

  

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE

 

Location

In the City playoffs, the first and second round games will be played at the home school site, unless an alternate site is selected by the schools involved.  In the Invitational playoffs, all rounds except the Finals will be played at the home site.  It is the responsibility of the school designated as the HOME team to make all necessary arrangements at the play-off site.

 

Location and Game Times for Preliminary Rounds:

 

  1. If the seating capacity at the home school cannot hold the anticipated crowd, an alternate site may be necessary, and the cost would be shared by the participating schools.

  2. If the teams involved in the first three rounds of the playoffs, schedule games other than at the times suggested by the Games Committee, then any loss will be shared by the two participating schools.  Schools may schedule a boys/girls doubleheader, or a Girls JV/Varsity doubleheader if the school is the home site for both games.  Suggested game times: 5:30/7:30 p.m.

  3. The Director of Interscholastic Athletics may move a game if that site will not accommodate the expected attendance

 Determination of Home Schoo

A.   The school with the higher seed  will be designated as home school in all rounds.

B.   In the City playoffs, Semi-Final games will be at an alternate site, selected by the Management Committee. 

 

NUMBER OF PLAYERS

 

Each team will be limited to fifteen players plus two managers.

 

TICKETS

 

In the City playoffs, schools will provide tickets for the first two rounds.  In the Invitational playoffs, schools will provide tickets for the first three rounds.  The Athletics Office will send Ticket Report Forms to all schools involved in the playoffs.

No complimentary tickets may be issued by the Financial Manager of any school.

ONLY THE ATHLETICS OFFICE IS AUTHORIZED TO ISSUE COMPLIMENTARY TICKETS

 

Gold Life passes, the 2000-01 official athletic passes, and faculty badges issued by the Director of Interscholastic Athletics will be honored at all playoffs.

 

Schools must be aware of seating capacity in the gymnasiums used.  Equal allotments of tickets must be available for both schools.  Do NOT oversell your site for a playoff game.  This only causes hard feelings when seats are not available.   Each school will be allowed half the seating capacity (See above, Location).

 

TOWELS

 

All teams must bring their own towels.

 

PHOTOGRAPHERS

 

Only photographers from the metropolitan newspapers who have a photographers' pass will be allowed to take pictures on the court level  

 

CONDUCT

 

 In keeping with the philosophy of Pursuing Victory with Honor, the administration and faculty of the schools participating are responsible for the conduct of their spectators. Since this is an emotionally-charged situation, we strongly recommend that the students in the rooters' section be reminded of the necessity for good sportsmanship and exemplary conduct before they come to the tournament.  Berating officials or noisy conduct during free throwing is punishable by technical fouls and could result in the forfeiture of a game.

 

CHEERLEADERS

 

Only Varsity cheerleaders, who are in school uniform, will be admitted to playoff games.  Cheerleaders must be seated during the game and cheer only before the game, during time-outs, and half-time.  Squads will be limited to 12 cheerleaders for all rounds.

 

UNIFORMS

 

The team designated as the home school will wear the light jerseys and the visiting team will wear dark, according to the National Federation Rule Book.

VALUABLES

Valuables should be left at home.

BUSES

 

Bus transportation will be provided for any participating school who wishes to order one.  Each school will order their own buses, (323) 227-4488.

 

BALLS

 

The home team must provide a leather game ball.  The Wilson ball will be the official ball for all rounds of the playoffs.  Host schools must provide a Wilson game ball.  If one is not available, one will be provided by the Athletics Office.

 

COACHES

 

Coaches are to remain with their teams while dressing and warming-up, BOTH BEFORE AND AFTER

THE GAME.

 

Coaches shall submit lineups at least ten minutes before the scheduled starting time.  Each team shall supply the scorers with names and numbers of each team member who may participate and the five starting players designated.

 

 

II.          RESPONSIBILITIES FOR FIRST AND SECOND ROUNDS (City)

            RESPONSIBILITIES FOR FIRST, SECOND, AND THIRD ROUNDS (Invitational)

 

HOME SCHOOL

 

The school designated as the home school will be responsible for making all arrangements for the playing of the game.  This includes payment of officials and working personnel as listed below.

 

GAME SITE

 

The game site shall provide and pay for the following personnel at Varsity contests:  (if necessary)

            1 Gymnasium Manager      - $35.00     1 Financial Manager      - $30.00                 

            1 Ticket Taker                - $30.00        2 Timers                - $30.00 each

            1 Ticket Seller                - $30.00        1 Announcer  - $30.00

 

The home school will be responsible for the overall administration of the game, and any expense not listed above should be discussed with the visiting school prior to the contest.

 

POLICE (L.A.P.D. and L.A.U.S.D. Police)

 

School police shall be arranged by the home school with the approval of the Athletics Office.

 

The two schools playing shall be responsible for faculty supervision and control of their spectators' sections (not to be included in the game expenses). 

 

Any deviations from the above MUST be approved by the Director of Interscholastic Athletics.

 

TICKET REPORTING AND DISTRIBUTION OF PROFITS

 

Both participating schools are to complete the Ticket Report Form after each game and return same to the Athletics Office within 30 days of the contest.  The Home School pays all authorized expenses relative to the staging of the game.  All remaining monies are returned to the Athletics Office with the Ticket Report Form.  Ticket Report Forms will be sent to all schools participating in the playoffs.

 

After all report forms are received by the Athletics Office, the two schools involved in each game  will receive a pro-rated share of twenty-five (25) percent of any profits.  The Interscholastic Athletics Committee will receive a fifty (50) percent share.  Any loss will be shared by the two schools.

 

GIRLS JV PLAYOFFS

 

The top team in each league will be placed in the JV playoffs.  There will be one entry from the Magnet League.  Additional spots will be filled by at-large entries, to be determined by the Seeding Committee.  If there is a tie, the tie-breaking procedure for Varsity playoffs will apply.  Seeding will take place on February 10, 2001.

 

The following dates will be used for JV playoffs.

 

ROUND I - Thursday, February 15, 2001 - 2:15 p.m.

QUARTER-FINALS - Tuesday, February 20, 2001 - 2:15 p.m.

SEMI-FINALS - Thursday, February 22, 2001 - 2:15 p.m.

FINALS - Thursday, March 1, 2001- 3:00 p.m

LOCATION

 

All games will be played at the home site of the higher seeded team.  It is the responsibility of the school designated as the HOME team to make all necessary arrangements at their particular playoff site.

 

EXPENSES

 

The schools involved will split the cost of the JV playoff games through the Semi-Finals.  Any profit would be divided equally between the schools.   For the Championship game, if there is a loss, the Home school will bill IAC for that amount.

 

TICKETS

 

It is recommended that the home school sell student body-issued tickets at all preliminary rounds.  Suggested ticket prices for Round I, Quarter-Finals, and Semi-Finals are:

 

Student     - $1.00                 General Admission   - $2.00

 

It is required that the home school sell student body-issued  tickets at the Finals.  Required ticket prices are:

 

Student     - $2.00                 General Admission   - $3.00

 

A Ticket Report Form will be sent to the Home school for the FINALS only.
