CIF-SS I-A: Canyon Upsets No. 1 MV;
Cubs Win; Tartans Too--(Feb. 23, 2002)

All four seeds were in action last night, including No. 1 Mission Viejo, which abruptly and unexpectedly finished their season with a loss to the Cinderella team of the year, Canyon of Canyon Country, a team which tied for third place in their league and which no one expected to see reach the semifinals.   All the other seeds won, including Loyola over Cajon behind Omar Wilkes' 29 points, Thousand Oaks who still think they're playing football and refuse to lose, and Glendora, which was taken to overtime by Lancaster. Here's a recap of the scores:

The semifinals will see Glendora v. Thousand Oaks at Westlake HS, and Canyon will play Loyola at LMU.  Both games will be on Tuesday, February 26, 2002, at 7:30 p.m.

We'll post the bracket up separately as well as a preview of the semifinals. Here are the details from last night's games:


Division I-A
Quarterfinals

Canyon Country Canyon 66, No. 1 Mission Viejo 56-- For a team that finished tied for third in league, Canyon (20-9) pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the playoffs this season by defeating visiting No. 1 seed Mission Viejo (26-3) behind Chad Eichten's 22 points and Jeremy Haggerty's 17 points.  Canyon will make its first appearance in a section semifinal game since 1978.  The Diablos were led by Santa Clara-bound Travis Niesen, who scored 20 points in the first half, and finished with 24, scoring just four in the fourth quarter.

No. 4 Loyola 83, Cajon 69 --Host Loyola (25-3) the No. 4 seed in the bracket was led by junior guard Omar Wilkes (6'-4" Jr. G) who scored 29 points in the win over Cajon (24-5).  The Cubs also got 12 points from Vincent Oliver,  Chris Rucker had 11 points and Davis Cantor also finished with 11.  Cajon was led by Donovan Morris who scored 31 points and grabbed nine rebounds.  Wilkes scored 10 points in the first quarter and Loyola raced out to a 22-10 lead at the end of one period.   The Cubs shot 31-of-48 from the field, including six three-pointers, and went 11-14 from the line. For Cajon, Morris was the bright spot, hitting 13-23 from the field, while Tony Danridge scored 12 points. Dmytry Lewis scored 14 points off the bench for Cajon, which as a team shot 31-69 from the field and 7-10 from the line.

No. 3 Thousand Oaks 74, San Gorgonio 68-- No. 3 host Thousand Oaks (27-3) was led by senior Dave Anderson who finished with a career-high 30 points in the win quarterfinal win over visiting San Gorgonio (21-8).  Thousand Oaks also got 17 points from Kevin Rex.  Thousand Oaks went on an 11-0 run in the third quarter to take a 52-42 lead.   Kevin Houston led San Gorgonio with 22 points, Khorry Lewis had 18, Daryl Leach 15 and Jacob Daigle 12. The key stretch came in the third quarter with San Gorgonio leading 42-41 following a field goal by forward Jacob Daigle. Led by Anderson, Thousand Oaks scored 11 consecutive points to take control of the game, seven by Anderson. San Gorgonio never got closer than five points the rest of the way.  San Gorgonio (68) -- Daigle 12, Houston 21, Lewis 18, Leach 15, Winters 2, Tyler 0, Edginton 0. Thousand Oaks (74) -- Mazza 6, Anderson 30, Rex 17, Olson 6, Myers 9, Handlos 2, Grosslight 4. San Gorgonio 19 17 12 20--68 Thousand Oaks 23 14 20 17--74 3-Point goals -- San Gorgonio 6 (Houston 3, Lewis 2, Daigle 1). Thousand Oaks 8 (Anderson 5, Rex 2, Myers 1). Fouled out -- Winters, Lewis, Daigle (SG). Total fouls -- San Gorgonio 20, Thousand Oaks 16.

No. 2 Glendora 79, Lancaster 75 (OT) --Glendora (27-2) was led by Larry Monroe who scored six of his 21 points in overtime while teammates Spencer Foster and Mike Mehanna finished with 23 and 21 points, respectively in the win over Lancaster (20-8) which was led by Mike Webb who had 33 points ( it was 33 in the LA Times and the Pasadena Star-News, but was reported as 37 in the Daily News). Glendora will meet Thousand Oaks on Tuesday in a semifinal game.  Trailing 66-64 with seven seconds remaining in regulation, Leonard Thomas of Lancaster rebounded a missed free throw and fed the ball to an open Mike Webb, who scored on a lay-up to send the game into overtime, but the Tartans outscored Lancaster 13-9 in the extra period. Glendora, which held off Silverado in the second round on Tuesday, will face Thousand Oaks in the semifinals at a site to be determined today by a coin flip.  Lancaster also received 12 points from James Smith and 11 from Charlie Jones.
