CIF-SS II-A Semis: King & Redondo
Will Meet In Final--(Feb. 23, 2002)

It will be No. 1 vs. No. 3 next Saturday at the Pond as Riverside ML King will meet Redondo Union, the defending II-A champions who last year beat Mayfair in the finals of the higher division before the playoffs were reconfigured this year.  Here's the scoring recap from last night:

No. 1 Riverside ML King 68, No. 4 Elsinore 65 (OT)
No. 3 Redondo Union 56, No. 2 Santa Margarita 53

We'll post the bracket up separately as well as a preview of the finals. Here are the details from last night's games:

DIVISION II-A
Semifinals

No. 1 Riverside ML King 68, No. 4 Elsinore 65 (OT)--Riverside King's (27-3) Garrett Hilt made one of two free throws with 24 seconds remaining to put King ahead and Dwayne Harris converted a pair with five seconds left, forcing Elsinore (24-6) to attempt a desperation three at the buzzer. Mack Green tried to shoot through two defenders near the top of the circle, but was blocked by King's Marvin Lea, and King defeated No. 4 seed Elsinore to advance to next week's Championship game where King will meet  No. 3 seed Redondo Union. While Hilt and Harris scored just four points each, Lea finished with a game-high 33 points, 18 in the fourth quarter and overtime.  Elsinore's Travon Keahey led the Tigers with 25 points but didn't score in overtime.  But it was Keahey who got Elsinore into overtime with a 3-pointer from the top of the key to tie the game with 9.9 seconds.  The game was close the whole way and neither team led by more than seven.  Elsinore hit 8 three pointers in the game, but shot just 2-14 from three in the first half.  Keahey struggled in the first half as he was double-teamed, but scored 17 of his 25 in the second half.  Green scored 17 points for Elsinore, 9 after the break.  Lea scored 6 oints in the overtime.

No. 3 Redondo Union 56, No. 2 Santa Margarita 53-- Redondo Union (21-6) was led by senior point guard Keith Ellison, who finished with a game-high 28 points, including 17 in the first 10 minutes, in the win over No. 2 Santa Margarita (23-5) which was led by senior guard Brandon Rohe, who finished with 22 points.  The game came down to the final few seconds. The Eagles managed to tie the game at 51-51 on a Rohe jumper.  Wendell White then hit a three pointer, one of only four shots he hit from the field all night and his only one of 10 three point attempts, to give Redondo the lead.   Rohe then drove to the basket and scored to bring Santa Margarita within a point. White then shot another three with only 33 seconds on the clock,  but missed and Rohe again drove the lane, but his shot also went in and out. White grabbed the rebound, was fouled and made one free throw, missed the second, and then was again fouled after getting the rebound, and he again made one of two for the final three point lead as time expired.   Redondo will play No. 1 seed Riverside King in the finals at the Pond.
