CIF-SS IV-AA QF's: El Segundo, 29 Palms,
H-W & Murphy Win--(Feb. 23, 2002)

The Division IV-AA quarterfinals were played last night.   Here's what happened: 

No. 1 El Segundo 65, Brentwood 57
Twentynine Palms 63, No. 4 Chaminade 62 (OT)
Daniel Murphy 60, St. Paul 56
No. 2 Harvard-Westlake 66, Oak Park 60 (OT)

The semifinals will feature:

El Segundo v. Twentynine Palms @ Yucca Valley HS
Murphy v. Harvard-Westlake @ Sherman Oaks Notre Dame HS

Both games will be played Tuesday, February 26, 2002 and will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.

We'll post the bracket up separately as well as a preview of the semifinals. Here are the details from last night's games:


DIVISION IV-AA
Quarterfinals

No. 1 El Segundo 65, Brentwood 57 --Senior Jeramie Hopson scored 30 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, on 7 for 11 shooting from the line to lead El Segundo (26-4) over Brentwood in a quarterfinal game played at Crossroads HS.  Senior forward Dashawn Strong (6'-5" Sr. F) had 19 points and 16 rebounds, while Mike Mcclullough had 11 points and six assists for El Segundo. Brentwood was led by Kevin Nishimura with 14 points.

Twentynine Palms 63, No. 4 Chaminade 62 (OT) --Twentynine Palms (20-6) Junior Dynamite Mathews scored 23 points, 21 rebounds, including the game-winning free throw in overtime. With seven seconds left in overtime, and the score tied at 62-62, senior forward Ken Randle stole the ball, passed it to Raymond Hester. Hester then drove into the lane and dished the ball off to Mathews, who was fouled hard on a dunk attempt. Mathews also grabbed 20 rebounds for the Wildcats (20-6), while Randle had 18 points and 17 rebounds. Twentynine Palms will play El Segundo in the semifinals Tuesday. It will be the Wildcats' seventh trip to the semifinals in the past eight years. Ken Randale had 18 points and 17 rebounds, and Bryan Cromwell had 14 points, hitting four of nine three-pointers, 10 rebounds and seven assists for Twentynine Palms. Chaminade (22-7) was led by Adrian Aye-Darko with 20 points and Lloyd Everett with 15.

Daniel Murphy 60, St. Paul 56 --Having knocked off the No. 3 seed Rosamond the other night, the Daniel Murphy Nobles (21-8) was ready for last year's IV-A runner up,  the St. Paul Swordsmen last night,  and came away with the win behind a combined 45 points from Justin Turman and Chuma Awaji;  Turman had 21 and Awaji had 34.  Daniel Murphy will head to the semifinals against the Wolverines of Harvard-Westlake who beat Oak Park in overtime.   St. Paul was led by Kevin Dyer who scored 20 (according to the Time; it was 22 in the Pasadena-Whittier papers) and 11 rebounds, including five on the offensive end.   Rudy Serna hit four three pointers in the game, pushing his season total to 119, moving the school record that much higher. St. Paul committed 19 turnovers in the game, five of them in the fourth quarter. St. Paul trailed 30-22 at halftime, and the game was tied going into the fourth at 43-43, and then tied again three more times, until late in the fourth quarter, St. Paul committed three fouls and Murphy took advantage to build a 59-54 lead with just 27 seconds remaining. St. Paul's Omar Cepeida scored once more with 13 seconds to play, and then fouled Turman to stop the clock but he hit one of two, putting the game out of reach.

No. 2 Harvard-Westlake 66, Oak Park 60 (OT)--Sophomore guard Bryce Taylor finished with 23 points and eight rebounds for Harvard-Westlake (24-5) which outscored Oak Park, 11-5, in overtime. Harvard-Westlake's Craig Weinstein had five points in overtime and finished with 16. The Wolverines will play Murphy in Tuesday's semifinals.  The game saw three players foul out, including H-W's Evan Harris and Harris Chung, while Oak Park's leading scorer Grant Smtih fouled out with 4:30 to play in the third quarter; he finished with 17 points (15 in the first half). Harvard-Westlake( 66) -- Weinstein 16, Taylor 23, Harris 4, Weinberger 11, Woolridge 2, Chung 6.  Oak Park (60) -- Dayley 2, G. Smith 19, McNair 8, Winningham 5, Tom 6, Klein 8, Smith 13. Harvard-Westlake 16 11 15 13 11--66 Oak Park 14 12 9 20 5--60 3-Point goals -- Harvard-Westlake 3 (Weinstein 1, Weinberger 2), Oak Park 6 (G. Smith 1, McNair 1, Tom 2, N. Smith 1). Fouled out -- Taylor (HW). Rebounds -- Harvard-Westlake 28, Oak Park 27. Technicals -- N. Smith (OP).
