CIF-SS Boys Division I-A Bracket:
First Round Matchups Updated--(Feb. 13, 2002)

There were five wild-card games on Wednesday night. Here's what happened, followed by the updated bracket with first round matchups set for Friday night.

Walnut 61, Marina 53 (OT) --Walnut (12-12) was led by Darnell Gilbert and Yuji Kamura with 12 points each over host Marina (14-13), which got 16 points from James Lambert in the loss. Gilbert sent the game into overtime with a layup with 7 seconds in regulation.

JW North 68, El Toro 62 --Albundo Esquivel, scoring 22 points, led Riverside North (11-14) to a Division 1A wild-card victory over El Toro (16-12). Esquivel, a junior guard, picked up the slack for Riverside County scoring leader Ronald Howard, who was held to nine points through three quarters and finished with 18 (six under average).

Temescal Canyon 50, Jurupa Valley 40 --Temescal Canyon (15-12) was led by Marty Wing with 13 points in the win over Jurupa Valley (11-14).   The Titans (15-12) fell behind early and trailed 18-10 midway through the second. Jurupa Valley (11-14) couldn't put the game away, however, missing three-pointer after three-pointer, shooting 2-20 from behind the arc.   Temescal Canyon fought back as the first half ended, taking the lead, 22-21, on Matt Twamley's three-pointer as time expired.  On Friday, the Titans will travel to Mission League champion Los Angeles Loyola for a 7:30 p.m. first-round contest.  Jurupa raced to a 10-4 lead in the first four minutes, and Temescal couldn't make a shot ---- despite being on the receiving end of eight first-quarter turnovers - as it made just three of 19 field goal attempts.  Dan Ayala's putback at the buzzer gave Jurupa a 13-10 lead heading into the second quarter.   Temescal surged to an 18-18 tie and used a buzzer-beater of its own to capture the halftime lead. Twamley hit the second of two free throws with 0:25 left and nailed a 3-pointer from the left wing to help Temescal take a 22-21 advantage into the break. Temescal then used a 12-4 run to take a commanding third-quarter lead, and pushed it as high as 14. Erick Wright led Jurupa with 15 points, and Jimmy Zucca added 10.

Century 61, Valencia 58 --David Sok finished with 20 points for Century (15-12) in the win over Valencia (13-14).

West Covina 84, Kaiser 77 (OT) --West Covina (16-11) from a 7 point half-time deficit behind Kevin Avar's 27 points and Jabir Jinna's 23 int he win over Kaiser (13-14), which was led by Phil Smith who scored 20 points in the first half, including four threes.   Eric Willhite fouled out for Kaiser in the final seconds of overtime. Kaiser was also missing 6-foot-3 center Allen Wade, who was ejected from the team's last game against Rubidoux for fighting, and  West Covina was without 6-3 forward Trevor Silvera, the team's leading rebounder, who was benched for missing a practice.

Edison 59, Warren 42--David Huff scored 16 points, including four three-pointers to lead host Edison (14-13).
