The bracket has been updated to reflect all first round games, and second round matchups are shown.  Home teams are the teams with the fewest home games played previously.  If both teams played on the road or at home in the first round, the host was determined by flipping a coin.   Details and scoring in first round games is shown below the bracket:

Divsion II-AA--First Round Games, Played 2/15/02

Upper Half of the Bracket

No. 1 Mater Dei 80, Hemet 56 --Junior Harrison Scahen had 19 points and 11 rebounds for top-seeded Mater Dei (23-4), which outscored Hemet in the second and third quarters, 45-19. Mike Strawberry added 12 points, Mike Gerrity 11 points and seven assists, and Wesley Washington 11 points. Sterling Crane and Kyle Boys each scored 14 points for Hemet (11-13).

Antelope Valley 64, Sultana 50--details not available.

Woodbridge 49, Kennedy 48 --Woodbridge (18-9) came away with the one point win at home as Patrick Haddan scored 18 points and David Burgess added 15.  Kennedy (16-11), had a chance to win the game, but Rhema McKnight's 22-footer at the buzzer bounded off the front end of the rim, and he finished with a team high 23 points, including 13 in the final four minutes.

Sunny Hills 68, Santiago Garden Grove 47 --Clay Carmody scored 15 points for Sunny Hills (23-5). Jon Shaw added 13 points for Sunny Hills.

St. John Bosco 86, West Valley 62 --Senior guard Giovanni St. Amant scored 40 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, five assists and five steals for visiting St. John Bosco (22-6). Robert Reynaga added 19 points and seven assist for the Braves. West Valley got 15 points
from Lawrence Williams and 13 points from Nick Stack.

El Dorado 61, Burbank 33 --David Patten had 29 points and 20 rebounds to pace host El Dorado (23-4). Peter Bond chipped in with 11 points for the Golden Hawks.

Cathedral City 87, Rubidoux 71 --Brandon Gray and Thomas Shewmake scored 25 points each for Cathedral City (19-7). No. 4 Corona Centennial 93, North Torrance 75 --J.R. Reese scored 34 points and Lance Soderberg added 20 points with 12 boards to lead host Corona Centennial (23-3). North Torrance finishes 15-13.  Keisuke Yoshida had 15 points on 4-for-5 shooting from behind the 3-point line for North Torrance while Jun Sensac had 15 points, Jarrod Carroll had 13 and Jason Davis had 10

Lower Half of the Bracket

No. 3 Villa Park 79, Chaparral 46 --Brice Prather had 24 points and 10 rebounds and Kyle Hogan had 15 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for third-seeded Villa Park (25-3). Villa Park had too much height and outside shooting for Chaparral. The Spartans controlled the game throughout and won 79-46 at home. The Pumas trailed 39-26 at the half, but Villa Park opened the third quarter with a 7-0 run to push its lead to 20. Senior Will Campbell and Brent Chodola led Chaparral with 17 points apiece.  The Spartans also hit nine 3-pointers in the win.

Newport Harbor 79, Loara 68 -- Newport Harbor senior Tony Melum scored a career playoff-high 33 points and added eight rebounds, seven assists and two blocks, hitting 15 of 20 field-goal attempts, including eight layups.  Senior point guard Greg Perrine added 13 points, eight assists and six rebounds, while 6-8 junior Nedim Pajevic collected 14 points and 15 rebounds to pace the Sailors (20-6). Loara (17-10) was led by senior Bruce Sheldon who finished with a team-high 26, including four three-pointers, while Hassan Cook added 21 points.

Moorpark 77, Saugus 74 --Visiting Moorpark (18-9) was led by Keith Lawrence who scored 24 points, including four 3-pointers. Shawn Fortman scored 17 points and Jose Rodriguez added 12. Saugus was led by Kevin Valle who scored 21 points, while senior point guard Marc Holmquist scored 13.  Moorpark (77) -- Lawrence 24, Meehan 2, Fortman 17, Fitzwater 3, Nystrom 5, Rodriguez 12, Lipka 7, Sharpe 5.   Saugus (74) -- Holmquist 13, Jones 4, Buchcamin 14, Valle 21, Hein 6, Hilton 2, Willkom 14.  Moorpark 23 25 9 20--77 Saugus 16 21 18 19--74 3-Point goals -- Moorpark 6 (Lawrence 4, Nystrom 1, Sharpe 1). Saugus 2 (Buchcamin 2). Fouled out -- Valle. Team record -- Moorpark 18-9.

Inglewood 70, La Mirada 52-- Inglewood (22-5) trailed, 12-2, after the first quarter and 26-24 at halftime, but used a 25-13 third-quarter advantage to pull away.  Chris Holloway scored 24 points, including 14 in the third quarter for Inglewood. Inglewood's backcourt had a solid game. Ray Reed scored 15 points and Jason McKinney had 10 points. D'Angelo Collins had eight points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.

Claremont 93, Santa Fe 64 --Shadden Aaaron recorded 27 points and seven rebounds for Claremont (21-6) and Cameron Munoz had 20 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Perrin Johnson scored 12 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks in the win.  Santa Fe was led by Robert Ruiz's 24 points. Claremont improves to 21-6.

Santa Barbara 44, Mira Costa 40 (OT)-- Preston Maloney hit a 3-pointer with seven seconds left to send the game into overtime and the Dons overcame a five-point deficit in the extra period to advance with the win over visiting Mira Costa.

Junior center Santiago Aguirre had a rough night scoring only 3 points, and the team shot 13-33 overall from two and 3-19 from three. Mira Costa was led by Greg Geier with 19 points, 12 rebounds and two assists.  Geier fouled out with 90 second remaining in overtime. Mira Costa--Harris 1, Jefferson 5, Ciasulli 9, Geier 19, Murphy 3, Bortrand 2. Totals 16 8-13 40. Santa Barbara -- Bogan 6, Rochestie 5, Maloney 8, Russell 4, Clemens 4, DeRose 10, Fisher 3, Aguirre 4. Totals 20 11-22 44. Mira Costa--7 7 8 10 8 -- 40 Santa Barbara--9 5 7 11 12 -- 44 3-point goals--MC 0, SB 3 (Maloney, Rochestie, Aguirre). Fouled out--Geier, Fisher.

Simi Valley 54, Norco 50-- Tony Palomarez scored 17 points and Mitch McManus had 11 points in the victory for the visiting Pioneers (18-9). Simi Valley, which trailed 26-25 at the half, used a 12-7 fourth-quarter advantage to improve to 18-9 on the season.  K.C. Bellefontaine pulled down 10 rebounds for Simi. Jeremy Black scored 13 points to lead Norco (15-12).   Simi Valley (54) -- Sullivan 2, McManus 11, Cuniga 2, Pesantez 3, Wells 5, Duarte 5, Bellefontaine 6, Schock 4, Palomarez 17.  Norco (50) -- Black 13, Cuadra 8, Knight 12, Ogunyoku 8, McDowell 10.  Simi Valley 16 9 17 12--54 Norco 13 13 17 7--50  3-Point goals -- Simi Valley 6 (McManus 3, Pesantez 1, Palomarez 2). Norco 6 (Black 2, Cuadra 2, Knight 2). Fouled out -- None. Rebounds -- Simi Valley (Bellefontaine 10). Assists -- Simi Valley (Duarte 8). Team records -- Simi Valley 18-9, Norco 15-12.

No. 2 Pasadena 64, Katella 34 --Senior point guard Duwan Rice had 14 points and senior combo guard Dino Wilburn 12 points for second-seeded Pasadena. Keith Smith led Katella (13-14) with 10 points.


All games with the exception of the final round will start at 7:30 p.m. unless another time is mutually agreed upon and clearance is received from the CIF-SS Office.  Public coin flips will be held in the lobby of the CIF-SS Office at 9:00 a.m. the day following each playoff game [these coin flips will determine subsquent sites after the first round, i.e., which school will be the host].  Coin flips will be available after 9:30 a.m. and we'll try to keep everyone posted with them here.
