CIF-SS Boys Division II-A Bracket:
2nd Round Results & Details--(Feb. 16, 2002)

The bracket has been updated to reflect all first round and second games complete, and the quarterfinal matchups which will be played this coming Tuesday, February 19.  Home teams are the teams with the fewest home games played previously.  If both teams played on the road or at home in the first round, the host was determined by flipping a coin.   Details and scoring in first round games is shown below the bracket:

II-A--Second Round Results, Games Played Friday, 2/15/02

Top Half of the Bracket

No. 1 Riverside ML King 98, Bellflower 77 --Marvin Lea scored 34 points for top-seeded King (25-3), which led by 18 points at the half.   Michael Hubbard scored 21 for Bellflower (15-14).

San Marcos 68, Sonora 61-- The Sonora Raiders grabbed a 10-point lead in the first quarter but San Marcos (19-8), led by Aaron Mercer's 22 points, including 13 in the third quarter, came back for the win and will play No. 1 MLK on Tuesday.  Mercer hit four 3-pointers. Seamus McKiernan had 19 points, six rebounds and five steals. Sonora's Travis Rogers scored 25 points, while San Marcos got 17 points from Asher Kupperman, as well as four assists.  Sonora --R. Rogers 9, T. Rogers 25, Mayfield 6, Salinas 10, Johnson 5, Trejo 4, Fews 2. Totals 18, 13-17 61. San Marcos--Kupperman 17, McKiernan 19, Spaventa 3, Fortune 7, Mercer 22. Totals 18 16-19 68. Sonora--14 13 17 17 -- 61 San Marcos --4 22 26 16 -- 68 3-point goals--S 4 (R. Rogers 3, Johnson), SM 4 (Mercer 4, Fortune). Fouled out--Fews. Technicals--Salinas.

Cypress 64, Brea-Olinda 45 --Matt Reid scored 37 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for Cypress (20-8), including five three-pointers and 12 rebounds, while Charlie Seaman dished out seven assists. Evan Moore led Brea Olinda (22-8) with 22 points, including 10 in the third quarter.   Reid made 15 of his 21 shots and shot 5-6 from three point range, including 19 in the third quarter.  The Centurions had a 30-22 lead at halftime and pushed it to 54-35 at the end of three.   Eric Giesler, the Wildcats' leading scorer was held to four points.

No. 4 Elsinore 71,  South Torrance 57-- The Tigers were led by senior Travon Keahey with a game-high 37 points, and 18 rebounds, including 14 in the second quarter.  Elsinore (22-4) moves into the quarterfinals against Cypress, 64-45 winners over Brea Olinda on Friday. Because Cypress (20-8), the second-place finisher in the Empire League, has played at home in the first two rounds, Elsinore will host that matchup at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.   After the Spartans (13-14) scored the first bucket of the third quarter, they went scoreless for nearly five minutes, while the Tigers turned a two-point lead at the half into to an 8 point lead. Sean Green added 11 points and seven rebounds for Elsinore. Sean Flynn led South Torrance with 12 points.

Bottom Half of the Bracket

No. 3 Redondo Union 74, West Torrance 47 --Adam Zahn had 26 points (13 in the third quarter) and nine rebounds and Keith Ellison had 15 points, nine rebounds and nine assists for Redondo Union (20-6). Dewayne Hollyfield had 18 points and nine rebounds for West Torrance (13-15) in the loss, while Brad Dolick had 13 points, including four 3-pointers, and 5 rebounds.  Wendell White finished with 12 points, four rebounds and four assists for Redondo.

La Habra 51, Paso Robles 45--Marcellus Robertson's 25 points led the host Highlanders (19-9).

Victor Valley 88, Whittier 76 --Kimo Brown made eight consecutive free throws in the fourth quarter to secure the win for Victor Valley (21-6). Dejesus Brown led Victor Valley scoring with 27 points.  Whittier trailed 29-8 after one quarter but then went on a 17-0 run that turned what had become a 24-point deficit (36-12) into a seven-point difference (36-29). Trailing by 10 (45-35) at halftime, the Cardinals committed seven turnovers in falling behind 67-53 at the end of three quarters. Michael Hernandez, who finished with a game-high 30 points, went to work and to the free-throw line, converting 7-of-10 attempts to go with eight points from Niko Reibert. Whittier managed to close the gap to three, 79-76, with 1:18 remaining.  The Cardinals had chances to take the lead but stumbled with back-to-back turnovers, and with 53.6 seconds to play, Kimo Brown began a run of eight consecutive free throws that rebuilt the margin to 87-76 with 26 seconds left.  Danny Carlos and Reibert scored 12 points each for the Cardinals. Victor Valley (21-6) was led by guard DeJesus Brown with 27 points. Three other players - Jonathan Ackerman, Michael Thompson and Brown - reached double figures with 12 points apiece.

No. 2 Santa Margarita 92, Dos Pueblos 54 --Lenny Collins had 16 points for Santa Margarita (22-4). Jonathan Pickert led Dos Pueblos, 15-11, with 12 points. Santa Margarita -- Collins 16, Travis Smith 14, Ty. Smith 5, Rohe 15, Toch 7, Quijano 1, Socci 15, Matthews 4, Sessenden 5, Bancho 2, Campbell 5, Donahue 2, Ahlering 1. Total 92. Dos Pueblos -- Friesen 3, Differnder 4, Pickert 12, Weatherhead 2, Ramsdell 6, Glick 7, Iden 7, Talmadge 7, Flemming 6. Total 54. Santa Margarita--23 23 27 28-- 92 Dos Pueblos--12 11 15 16 -- 54 3-point goals: SM 10 (Collins, Tr. Smith, Rohe 3, Socci 3, Sessenden, Campbell); DP 2 (Pickert, Glick). Fouled out: None.


All games with the exception of the final round will start at 7:30 p.m. unless another time is mutually agreed upon and clearance is received from the CIF-SS Office.  Public coin flips will be held in the lobby of the CIF-SS Office at 9:00 a.m. the day following each playoff game [these coin flips will determine subsquent sites after the first round, i.e., which school will be the host].  Coin flips will be available after 9:30 a.m. and we'll try to keep everyone posted with them here.
