CIF-SS Boys Division III-AA Bracket:
2nd Round Results & Details--(Feb. 16, 2002)

The bracket has been updated to reflect all first round and second games complete, and the quarterfinal matchups which will be played this coming Tuesday, February 19.  Home teams are the teams with the fewest home games played previously.  If both teams played on the road or at home in the first round, the host was determined by flipping a coin.   Details and scoring in first round games is shown below the bracket:

III-AA--Second Round Game Results, Played 2/15

Upper Half of the Bracket:

No. 1 Artesia 73, Hesperia 46 --Ronald Allen hit four three-point shots and finished with 21 points for Artesia (19-6). Hesperia finished at 15-13.

Lompoc 74, Atascadero 64-- Joel Smith and Chris Lynwood combined for 50 points.  Smith had 29 points and eight rebounds. Lompoc, 20-5, led by only six with two minutes to play but secured the win by hitting 7-of-8 free throws.  Mecklen Davis led Atascadero, 13-13, with 32 points.

Northwood 81, Los Altos 59--Shaun Bailey and Rob Selway scored 23 apiece and Drew Terry added 22 points for the host Timberwolves (23-3).

No. 4 Bishop Amat 47, Fullerton 43 --John Haywood scored 21 points for Bishop Amat (22-5). Darren Fells scored 16 points for Fullerton (15-14).  Fullerton slowed the pace of the game by running down the shot clock on its possessions and was able to keep the score close throughout.   Josh Myles and George Balderas iced the game with two free throws apiece late in the game to hold off Fullerton.

Bottom Half of the Bracket

No. 3 Palm Desert 44, Diamond Ranch 41 --Josh Zazulia hit a basket to put Palm Desert ahead for good at 42-41 with 35 seconds left. Zazulia finished with 15 points and Jimmy Bohm added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Palm Desert faces Ocean View in the quarterfinals Tuesday. Palm Desert took a 36-30 lead into the fourth quater, but Diamond Ranch put together a 7-2 run to pull within a point, 38-37, inside the two-minute mark. Off an assist from Josh Zazulia, Bohm layed in a basket to give Palm Desert a three-point cushion (40-37). Diamond Ranch’s Mike Criscione hit a jumper to cut the lead to 40-39, but Donald Brady Jr., off another assist by Zazulia, hit a shot to put the Aztecs up 42-39.  Richard Coombs grabbed a rebound of a Zazulia miss, drove the length of the court and scored to pull the Panthers within one point against (42-41) with a minute remaining in regulation.  Diamond Ranch--11 7 12 11 -- 41 Palm Desert--10 16 10 8-- 44 Diamond Ranch--Evan Flagg 9, Mike Criscione 7, Richard Coombs 8, Ray Lewis 3, Delano Gray 6, Drake 6, Michael Earl 2, Drake Walker 4, Brent Humphrey 2 Palm Desert-- Josh Zazulia 15, Jimmy Bohm 10, Donald Brady 8, Chase McQuillen 4, Quintin Watkins 3, Aki Sator 4

Ocean View 47, Garden Grove Pacifica 45 --Casey Ortiz had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Ocean View (20-8).

Apple Valley 51, Dominguez 48--Jamal Holden hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer to give Apple Valley (23-3) the upset win over the defending State Division II champion Dons.  Holden led all scorers with 23 points.  Dominguez was led by senior point guard Keion Kindred with 22 in the loss.  Apple Valley led the game throughout, but Dominguez took a 45-43 lead on a basket when Keion Kindred hit a follow-up basket with five minutes remaining in the game. The game was tied at 48-48 inside the last minute. The final play was set up when Apple Valley rebounded a missed shot from Kindred with four seconds remaining. After an Apple Valley timeout, Holden, who finished with 24 points, received the inbounds pass from Darrel Sipes at Dominguez's free-throw line and worked up the right side of the court before his final shot.

No. 2 Mayfair 62, Newbury Park 46 --Matt McCraw led Mayfair (21-7) with 18 points in the win over Newbury Park (15-12) which got a game-high 29 points and 9 rebounds from Chris Randall. Randall also set a sincle season scoring record with 619 points. Mayfair (62) -- McCraw 18, McFadden 13, King 10, Hawkins 10, Thomas 2, Childress 9.  Newbury Park (46) -- Chris Randall 29, Garza 8, Meru 6, Flores 3.  Mayfair 15 18 16 13--62 Newbury Park 5 15 19 7--46 3-Point goals -- Mayfair 4 (McCraw 4). Newbury Park 3 (Garza 2, Randall). Fouled out -- Newbury Park (Walker, Schmidt). Rebounds -- Newbury Park 21 (Randall). Assists -- Newbury Park 10 (Meru 5). Total fouls -- Mayfair 15, Newbury Park 22.


All games with the exception of the final round will start at 7:30 p.m. unless another time is mutually agreed upon and clearance is received from the CIF-SS Office.  Public coin flips will be held in the lobby of the CIF-SS Office at 9:00 a.m. the day following each playoff game [these coin flips will determine subsquent sites after the first round, i.e., which school will be the host].  Coin flips will be available after 9:30 a.m. and we'll try to keep everyone posted with them here.
