The bracket has been updated to reflect all first round games, and second round matchups are shown. Home teams are the teams with the fewest home games played previously. If both teams played on the road or at home in the first round, the host was determined by flipping a coin. Details and scoring in first round games is shown below the bracket:

III-A First Round Game Results, Played Friday 2/15/02
Upper Half of the Bracket
No. 1 Compton Centennial 110, Blair 66--details not available.
Pomona 56, Costa Mesa 40--Pomona (20-7) was led by Odell Howard, a 6-foot-5 senior center bound for Washington State on a football scholarship, who scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed a game-high 20 rebounds, to avenge a 63-43 loss to the Mustangs Dec. 1, a game he missed while on a football recruiting trip. Costa Mesa (18-10) was led by senior point guard David Conte with 21 points while Chad Vakili scored seven of his nine points in the first quarter.
Ganesha 78, Banning 65--Ganesha dominated the first period, outscoring the Broncos, 26-15, and forcing seven turnovers. By the half, the Giants held a 17-point lead, 46-29. Adam McDade scored 24 points, including 17 in the first half for Banning. Michael Efevberha scored 26 points, but was ejected after a flagrant foul. As a result of the ejection, Efevberha will have to sit out Ganesha's next round playoff game; if Ganesha loses, this will have been Efevberha's final high school appearance. Joseph Bonner scored 18 and Ariel Hall-Jones scored 10 for Ganesha.
No. 4 Muir 70, Gabrielino 31 --Ryan Hollins and Seth Davis had 13 points each for fourth-seeded Muir (22-5). Gabrielino (15-11) had no one to match up with Muir's starting frontcourt of Hollins and Davis. Senior forward Sean Carey led Gabrielino with 12 points. Jeff Lim had 7. Muir scored 11 unanswered points in the final 1:30, including four fast-break baskets. Senior guard Jamaal Hall scored 12 points for Muir.
Bottom Half of the Bracket
Ridgecrest Burroughs 64, No. 3 La Canada 61 --Gavin
MacGregor had 22 points and 17 rebounds and Karl Williams had 14 second-half points and
seven assists to help visiting Burroughs (14-9), get the upset victory over third-seeded
La Canada (22-5).After staging a valiant comeback to trim an 11-point fourth-quarter
deficit to one with 27 seconds remaining, La Canada couldn't complete the rally and fell,
64-61, to the wild-card entry that traveled more than 3 1/2 hours to unceremoniously end
the Spartans' season after one round. La Canada was led by junior Billy Hofman with
20 points, 10 in the fourth quarter, while senior shooting guard Robbie Neyland finished
with 13, including 3 three-pointers. Ridgecrest was led by Gavin MacGregor with a game
high 16 rebounds and 22 points, five blocked shots. The Spartans made just three of
12 field goals, including one of eight from three-point territory, which was part of a
nine-of-28 (32.1%) effort from

San Dimas 76, Bolsa Grande 64 --A 23-8 first quarter keyed San Dimas (21-5), which got 25 points from Ryan Gunderson. Omar Amaral had 32 for points for Bolsa Grande (20-7). Curtis Small had 15, Antouan Mesropian had 14 and Michael Flores added 10. Mesropian had a team-high 16 rebounds. Valle Vista League runner-up San Dimas (21-6) faces Ridgecrest Burroughs (20-7) in the quarterfinals Tuesday. The Burros knocked off No. 3 seed La Canada 64-61.
Covina 53, Workman 42 --Jino La Bomme scored 16 points with six assists to lead Covina (22-5) at Workman (16-10). Covina also received 19 points from forward Brett Pill and nine points and nine rebounds from Vernon Covington. The Lobos received 13 points from Bruce Acevedo and 12 from Morales
No. 2 Bishop Montgomery 73, Santa Paula 44 -- Bishop Montgomery (21-6) was led by junior Fred Washington with a game-high 31 points to lead the Knights to the win over host Santa Paula (14-11), who were led by Ernesto who scored 19 points, including three 3-pointers, and six rebounds. Carlos Mendez scored 12 points, hitting three 3-pointers. Bishop Montgomery (73) -- Howard 2, Washington 2, Williams 2, Autry 4, Peace 9, Clark 3, Scott 6, Dodd 2, F. Washington 31, Lee 10. All games with the exception of the final round will start at 7:30 p.m. unless another time is mutually agreed upon and clearance is received from the CIF-SS Office. Public coin flips will be held in the lobby of the CIF-SS Office at 9:00 a.m. the day following each playoff game [these coin flips will determine subsquent sites after the first round, i.e., which school will be the host]. Coin flips will be available after 9:30 a.m. and we'll try to keep everyone posted with them here.
