CIF HS Games: Results & Details From
Friday 2/8/02 & Complete Standings--(Feb. 11, 2002)

Sorry we're late with this, but posting up the brackets yesterday really delayed us from doing anything with the results from last Friday night, the last day of regular league competition (actually there were one or two games that the CIF-SS allowed to be played on Saturday, including the second half of the Viewpoint v. Avalon double-header on the island, which resulted in Viewpoint getting its 11th win and a playoff berth).  Anyway, here are the results from the games played Friday, February 8, 2002, gathered from reports sent to us from team representatives, coaches, players and parents, as well as what we've been able to gather from local newspapers and websites. If you know of a game that we missed, a score that is unreported, or some details that we're missing, send it in via e-mail.

We've also added the final league standings, which we believe are current for each league where shown as of Friday's   final results (we've used the standings which were published by the LA Times as compiled by Eric Maddy, so whether they are correct or not is something that we just can't vouch for, but we'll take the Times' word for it).  Hopefully, with league races coming down to the wire, and seedings and playoff pairings being determined this weekend, this will be useful to someone.....

Northern League

Lompoc 58, Arroyo Grande 46--Most people, including us at SoCalHoops, have no clue how the Northern League tournanment actually works, but apparently its based on points awarded for a combination of league wins and also tournament wins.  The team with the most "points" gets the league title.   By the time the tournament started this year, the Lompoc boys team had already clinched the league title, but Righetti could have gotten a share of it if they'd won the tournament, and possibly could have knocked Lompoc out, and so would San Luis Obispo.   But all that was rendered moot when Lompoc won the champinoship game on Friday. The third seeded Eagles (4-4 NL) managed to keep the game at a tempo more to their liking than the Braves' most of the way. But Lompoc used its aggressive press to speed things up the last few minutes and pull away. Joel Smith and the rest of Lompoc's front line kept high scoring 6-8 Arroyo Grande center Scott Buhl from being the dominating force inside that he usually is. Buhl wound up with 14 points. Smith scored 16 points, Chris Lynwood had 15, and Tim Hilley and Anthony English had nine points each.Sean Hogeboom scored 11 points for Arroyo Grande.

Righetti 57, Santa Maria 55--Righetti won the third place game.  The Warriors (5-3 NL) took their third nail-biting win in as many games against the Saints (2-6) this season. Santa Maria led 28-25 at halftime  Ben Paine and Aaron Subido led the Saints as Paine poured in 24 points and Subido, the Warriors' leading scorer this year, scored 20. Donnie Jones scored 15 points for Santa Maria, and Emanuel Lopez put in 12. Paine made two free throws and Subido made one in the last 24 seconds to nail down the win for the Warriors. Jones made a three-pointer with one second left for the Saints' last points.

Asghari started against his ex-team Friday night but finished with just 10 points in 10 minutes. He was on the bench when visiting Taft of Woodland Hills surged to a 19-point lead in the fourth quarter. Asghari finally returned with 2:52 remaining and Birmingham down by 11, and he dished an assist, then hit two 3-pointers in the final 42 seconds, including a 25-footer to pull the Patriots to within one point with 14 seconds left. Asghari was fouled on the play but missed the free throw which could have tied the game.  He didnt' get to shoot that shot until about 10 or 15 minutes after the three pointer because of the crowd which had rushed the court.  After the free throws, Smith came back and hit four free throws to secure the win.  Arman Shatrang led Birmingham with 18 points, including eight in the final three minutes of the game.  Loren Leath scored 16 for the Patriots, and Levi Henry had 12.
