CIF-SS Division V-AA Boy's Championship Game

Rolling Hills Prep and Ribet had faced Ribet twice before in league and once in a tournament up in Fresno over the December break.   RHP won two of those previous three (they lost at the Fresno Christian Tournament), and this fourth meeting had a lot of intensity and some great rivalry, and once again, Rolling Hills Prep came away with the win, taking their first Southern Section title since they won it in Division V-A in 1996 when they beat Laguna Blanca under head coach Brian Knigin.

RHP had four players in double figures and so did Ribet, but second half shooting from the field at 80% for RHP as oposed to just 42% for Ribet made the difference.   Curtis  Allen made a good case for being named Player of the Year in the Division as he scored 28 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and dished out 5 assists, playing the entire game, and DJ Wright finished with 21 p;oints and 2 assists.   Teammate Jason Daley had 18 points and 5 assists, while Alex Elliott finished with 10 points and 5 rebounds.  Curtis didn't have a perfect game, but it was close and it was impressive:  He shot 12-19 from the field and had 2 steals, and Daley and Tristan Smith were both perfect from the line, shooting 5-5 and 2-2 respectively.

Ribet got some big number from Garrick Gaines who finished with 21 points, Donald Shead with 16, Caleb Bassey had 14 points and Yancy Clark wound up with 12 points, and obviously these were the guys who played the most minutes.   Shomar Thomas started for Ribet, played 20 minutes in the game, but didn't score.   Bassey also had 10 rebounds as did Yancy Clark.

Both teams will advance to the State Tournament, which begins next week.  Look for Rolling Hills Prep to play the runners up in either San Diego D-V or Central Section, and for Ribet to either get Price or one of the champs in San Diego or Central.

Here's the box score from the game:
