SoCalHoops State Tournament News

Boys' California State Championship
Playoff Brackets--(Mar. 3, 2002)

Division I   Division II   Division III   Division IV   Division V

The State CIF website has most of the same information that you'll find here, but we've just laid it out a bit differently, i.e., as one big bracket so that both the North and the South are headed to the same spot, i.e., the finals.  If you have questions about how the state tournament works, they have a pretty decent "State Championship FAQ" which can answer, in a non-technical way, most any question you might have.

Division I

Here's the bracket:  Note:  In the North, there are two "play-in" or "out of bracket" games which will be played on Tuesday, March 5. Game 1 is Vallejo @ Pleasant Valley. Game 2 is Serra @ Lincoln (SF). Both games are @ 7:30 p.m.

In the South, Westchester is No. 1 and will host Thousand Oaks; Fairfax is the No. 2 seed but with a lower travel priority will travel to Carlsbad. The No. 3 seed is Long Beach Poly, which hosts the Loyola Cubs, and that should be an incredible game.  Finally, Eisenhower was not seeded and they also had only a No. 6 travel priority, and they will go to No. 4 Clovis West, a place where no one not from Clovis wants to play, especially in the playoffs.  Eagles v. Eagles....hmmm.

In the South, the No. 1 seed is Westchester; Fairfax is No. 2, Long Beach Poly is No. 3, and Clovis West is No. 4.  Basically all the seeds are explained below in the two charts also showing the travel priorities.

In the second round, to determine who gets to be the home team and who has to travel, the CIF uses considerations called "travel priorities" which are combined with the seedings.

Basically, the team with the higher travel priority, gets to stay home, while the teams with the lower travel priority can expect to be on the road if they play a higher priority team in the second round.  Here are the seedings and travel priorities for the SoCal entrants:

Seeded Teams Travel Priority  Travel Priority

There is one Monday night (March 5) "out-bracket" game in the North:  Game 1--Oak Ridge v. Chico @ El Dorado Hills at 7:30 p.m.   The winner gets No. 1 seed St. Francis on Tuesday.

Mater Dei is the No. 1 seed and will host Escondido in the first round. Pasadena was the No. 4 seed, but has a lower travel priority than Stockdale, so the Bulldogs travel in the first round.  Riverside King is No. 3, but with a lower travel number, than Helix will go to Helix.  Finally, Redondo Union as the No. 2 seed gets the homecourt advantage and will host Fresno Hoover on Wednesday, March 6.   Here's the entire bracket:
