vsflogo.jpg (7221 bytes) What:   6th Annual "Battle of the Valley" All Star Game
When:  April 27, 2002
Where: Cal State Northridge
Who:    28 Top CIF-SS & LA City Players
Time:    8:00 p.m.

The Valley Sports Foundation is once again hosting the "Battle of the Valley" All-Star games at California State University at Northridge.  There will be two games, a girls' All-Star game at 6:00 p.m. followed by a boys' All-Star game which will commence at 8:00 p.m. (or as soon as the girls' game is done).   Coaches of the teams were announced last month-- Greg Hilliard of Harvard-Westlake will coach the CIF-SS team, and Mike Wagner of Reseda HS, will coach the City Section players.

There are some top players participating this year.   The Battle of the Valley, which has produced more than 30 Divison I college players in both boys' and girls', will feature athletes chosen from among 75 area high schools.   The Valley Sports Foundatin, is a non-profit organization which organizes youth sports and activities for local athletes and schools.

On the City side, Sylmar HS set a record when five players from the City Section quarterfinalists were chosen.  The roster for the City team will feature Louis Darby, Frank Robinson, Jeff Morse, Sam Harris and Alfredo Tovar.   Of course, we understand that the game will be set up in such a way that no more than 2 players from the same school will be on the floor at the same time, but this still has to be some sort of record for players selected from the same team.

On the CIF-SS side, top players include All-State (Div. V) and First Team All-CIF point guard David Gale from Buckley;  Ventura County's leading scorer, Chris Randall;  First Team All-CIF Craig Weinstein from Harvard Westlake (Divison IV-AA Champions), and a host of other top regional players.

We'll be covering the game, and we also understand that it will be televised (or recorded for later broadcast) by either KDOC or on one of the local cable outlets using the KDOC camera crews....Either way, get there in time to see it because this is a game which is always fun.  And as for the Slam Dunk contest, well, they can just hand the title to Louis Darby before it even starts.....seriously.   That young man can jump out of the gym.

See you there.
