Mohamed Abukar Commits
To Georgia & Coach Harrick--(May 10, 2002)

Remember those early junior commitments we were writing about a few days ago? Well, we looked back in our prior two weeks' e-mail, stuff that we either read at the time or glossed over, and there, among a mountain of messages was one from Ollie Goulston about Mohamed Abukar, the talented junior from Rancho Bernardo HS who has committed to the University of Georgia and coach Jim Harrick. Here's the press release we received from Ollie last week:

Mohamed Abukar, a junior at Rancho Bernardo High School (San Diego, California) has accepted a basketball scholarship to attend the University of Georgia beginning in the 2003-2004 school year.

Abukar, a 6-09 forward, was a 1st Team All-Palomar League selection last year despite missing 13 games due to a separated shoulder injury. He is a 2 year varsity starter, and averaged 20 points and 11 rebounds per game this past season. Abukar has been rated among the top 3 power forwards in the west by Prepwesthoops.com, and among the top 50 players in the junior class nationally by Hoopscoop magazine.

Currently, Abukar plays for the Southern California All-Stars travel program who he helped lead to the championship of the Double Pump Las Vegas Easter Classic. Abukar is averaging 15 points and 10 rebounds per game for SCA, whose program has produced in recent years, players such as Tyson Chandler (NBA), Jamal Sampson (California), Josh Childress (Stanford), Floyd North (Oregon State), and Cedric Bozeman (UCLA).

This coming summer, Abukar will be a member of the West squad at the United States Basketball Festival and attend the National Basketball Players Association Camp, as well as participate in the Nike All-American Camp in July. Abukar is also one of only 36 juniors and seniors nationally who have been invited to participate in the 2002 USA Junior National Team Trials at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Participants on this team will compete in the World Championships in Venezuela in July.

"I have been honored and blessed to receive and accept a basketball scholarship to the University of Georgia. On my visit, I got a chance to get to know the coaching staff and players, and was extremely impressed. I am excited to have the opportunity to be coached by someone as experienced and successful as Coach Harrick. I feel that the academics, campus, facilities, and coaching as well as the Bulldog style of basketball will help me reach my potential as a player and a person. I am thrilled to be a Bulldog, and look forward to being part of a rising basketball power," Abukar said today.

Abukar carries a 2.7 overall G.P.A. and has obtained a qualifying SAT score. He will sign a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Georgia during the early signing period in November, 2002.
