Cal Poly Pomona Picks Up
Guy Beahm & Ron Strange--(May 28, 2002)
We actually missed this one when it was first reported, but it should be of more than minor interest to local basketball fans who follow Cal Poly Pomona hoops. As reported in the Los Angeles Times on May 21 by sports writer James Lee
Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball Coach Greg Kamansky signed two players in the late signing period which ended 13 days ago to fill some holes in the Broncos frontcourt: Guy Beahm, a 6-7" transfer from West Valley JC in Saratoga, and former Rancho Cucamonga player Ron Strange, a 6'-8" forward who played two years at Fullerton JC and then one year at Angelo State in Texas in 2000. Strange sat out last year and has one year of eligibility remaining. While at Fullerton JC, he averaged 16 ppg and 8 rpg. Some of you may remember Beahm as one of the standouts at the West Coast All-Star camp several years ago, and a solid player on one of the Double Pump travel teams at the Big Time (coincidentally, it was the team coached by Dave Goosen, who was just named the new head coach at Burbank HS...that same team also had the Errick and Derrick Craven, Montel Duhon, Amani Daanish, David Gale, Nik Caner-Medley, Steve Brown and Kevin Eleby). Beahm averaged 15 ppg last season and helped lead his West Valley team to the second round of the Northern California regionals in the JUCO (COA) tournament.
The two signings give the Broncos some added size and depth up front, since the Broncos lost eight seniors to graduation, including starters Raymond Hubbard and David Erickson at the post positions. With these two, together with Jeff Bonds and David Sybesma at the small foward-shooting guard spots, the Broncos will be a better team and could give a lot of CCAA conference opponents some trouble.
