High School Coaching Changes Mark
Beginning Of Summer Season--(May 28, 2002)
Summer used to mark the beginning of the transfer season for high school athletes. There will no doubt be some movement among student-athletes this summer, but spring and early summer also usually bring news of recent hirings and movement among coaches at the high school level too. Here are some recent reports which have appeared in some of the local newspapers which might have gone unnoticed and which merit some attention:
Dave Goosen, former Venice HS boys' coach has been hired as the new Burbank boys' basketball coach, replacing Ron Quarterman who has taken an assistant coaching position at the new Pierce College program under head coach Brad Wright. Quarterman was head coach at Burbank for six seasons, and prior to that was the head coach at Bell-Jeff. Goosen, 31 years old and a graduate of Cal State Dominguez Hills, has hired former assistant Bob Kinzel and former Burbank player Steve De Los Santos for his staff. Goosen compiled a 65-42 record at Venice coaching players like Montel Duhon (Boise State) and Glen McGown (Pepperdine) who has now declared early for the NBA draft. Goosen told us earlier when he resigned at Venice before the start of the 2001-02 season that he was tired of not receiving any support from the Venice administration for the sports program, a statement he repeated when interviewed recently by the Burbank Leader (the local LA Times-owned community newspaper).
Travis Showalter, who previously served as boys' basketball coach and athletic director at Lawndale Leuzinger, will take over as the new Moreno Valley Mustangs' boys' basketball head coach. The appointment is subject to school board approval.
Nathan Harrison has been hired to coach boys' basketball at Anaheim Canyon, replacing Dave Taylor, who had coached the Comanches for three seasons. Harrigan was an assistant boys' basketball coach at Irvine Northwood the past two seasons. Canyon finished 10-16 this season.
Mark Stewart has been hired to coach boys' basketball at La Habra High. Stewart, who coached boys' basketball at Paramount the past eight seasons, replaces Craig Falconer, who resigned at the end of this season. Falconer led the Highlanders to a 19-10 record.
Randy Held has been named as the new boys' basketball coach at St. John Bosco. Held had been an assistant under former head coach Matt Hart for four years at St. John Bosco and two years at La Puente Bishop Amat. Hart resigned to take the top assistant coaching job at San Diego State in the women's program.
Tom Donahue, who has coached boys' basketball at Santa Paula High for the past 12 seasons, has been hired as the new head coach at Westlake High School according to Athletic Director Lisa Magorien.
Greg Eckler has been hired by Bonita HS in LaVerne as the new head coach. Eckler, 27, replaces Milun Mraz, who, in two seasons, led the Bearcats to a 36-19 record and two playoff appearances. Mraz resigned in March at the conclusion of the season. Eckler had been an assistant at LaVerne for the past two seasons.
Joe Brick has been named as the new Laguna Hills High School boys' basketball coach, replacing Dave Brown, who retired as the third-winningest coach in Orange County with 527 career victories. Brick had been an assistant at Laguna Hills for the last seven years.
