Very Important! More Summer Event Coach
Approval Requirements!! Please Read--(May 14, 2002)

Please Note:  This is a two-part analysis of the NCAA Summer Event Coaching Requirements for 2002.    This is the second part of the article.....You must also read the first part of this article located at this link.

You must also read the information at the SECA (Summer Event Coach's Approval) website.   Do it now.  Don't delay.

S.E.C.A.  Remember this acronym....

July 3, 2002.  Remember the date....

June 14, 2002  (one month from today)....Remember this date also.

S.E.C.A. is the NCAA's program for "Summer Event Coach's Approval" run in conjunction with the National Federation of High Schools and the AESP.

The dates?   These dates are absolutely critical if you intend to be a travel team coach this summer at any NCAA certified men's basketball summer event.

July 3, 2002:  This is the last date to send in your "Summer Event Coach's Approval" forms to SECA.  It is the last day that the SECA will process your request to be certified as a summer coach.

June 14, 2002:  Assuming that you plan to participate as a coach at a certified NCAA summer event, you must submit the "Coach's Approval" forms to any event operator not less than 21 days before the event.   What this means, is that June 14 is the absolute last day to submit information for an event which is scheduled to take place during the first day of the NCAA summer evaluation period which runs from July 8 through July 17 for the first period, and then July 22 through July 31.

If you plan to coach, remember:  It is your responsibility to complete the approval process. It is the event operator's (tournament or summer camp administrator) responsibility to confirm your approval before allowing you to coach at their event.

We've already posted the key documents which consist of the NCAA's "Summer Event Coach's Approval" package, which must be sent to the NCAA and to tournament and event operators by anyone who wants to coach this summer.

But there's more.  Much more.

Participating as a coach at NCAA Certified Summer events is a two-step process.  Not only must you fill out the "Coaches Approval" packet, but you also have to be pre-approved (i.e., certified) by a governing body before you can participate at all.  Without the pre-approval, you can forget the other stuff.

Being "Pre-approved" is the bare minimum.  So pay attention.

How do you get "certified" or "pre-approved?"

Here's how.

The banner above will take you to the "Summer Event Coach's Approval" website, which has been established by the National Federation of High Schools in association with the NCAA and the American Sport Education Program (AESP).

Here's the bottom line about what you'll find there....we've excerpted some important information you'll need:

"In November 2001 the NCAA passed legislation requiring all coaches who will be coaching teams at NCAA certified summer men's basketball events to be preapproved.

"The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) is working with the American Sport Education Program (ASEP) to provide a convenient and efficient approval process called the Summer Event Coach's Approval (SECA). Coaches can order a SECA packet that has the materials they need to complete the Summer Event Coach's Approval. It contains two sections: a short, self-study module, Coaching Summer Event Basketball; and application materials including a Coach's Code of Ethics.

"Here's a flowchart of how the Coach's Approval process works:

What this means is that you must order the Summer Event Coach's Approval Packet from SECA (these are the documents, in part, which we've reproduced earlier).  Again you can order a SECA packet by clicking on this link.

What level of certification do you need?  According to SECA, you need to

"Complete a special, self-study coaching education module called Coaching Summer Event Basketball. This module covers coaching fundamentals for basketball coaches and information on NCAA rules and regulations for NCAA college-bound student-athletes. A 30-item test covering both coaching principles and rules and regulations is also included for you to complete. The Coaching Summer Event Basketball module and test will take approximately 3
hours to complete."

What is the cost of this test? There are apparently two prices:

SECA packet (ONLINE download) $50
SECA packet (PRINT version)** $59.50

*Coaches outside the US, please call 217-351-5076 for pricing and ordering options. In Canada, please call 800-465-7301.

Once you get the packet, and take the self-study test, you will need to complete all the other packet materials.  Include all requested documents, and send them to this address:

ASEP
ATTN: SECA
1607 N. Market St.
P.O. Box 5076
Champaign, IL 61825-5076

Avoid approval processing delays! Please use the Coach's Checklist provided with your packet to ensure completion of all necessary forms and avoid delay in the processing of your approval packet.

Plan ahead! Your deadline is July 3rd! Please allow sufficient time for mailing your SECA packet. Completed SECA packets received by July 3rd will be processed by ASEP within 24 hours. SECA packets with missing information will take longer than 24 hours to process.

Again, please visit the SECA website if you have any further questions about receiving pre-approval to participate as a coach in summer events.   Remember, without this certification, you won't be allowed to participate.

Lastly, the SECA website also has a very comprehensive FAQ section.  Read it.  Become familiar with the requirements.  Contact SECA.  Get approved.  Once you get it all done, and insure that you can coach, then be sure to tell the NCAA to stick it where the sun don't shine!
