Signs With St. Mary's --(May 9, 2002)

stmarys.jpg (3510 bytes)This one took place just last week, so we're not as late as we are with some of this news we're trying to catch up with.  Blake Sholberg, a big 7'-1" lanky post player, who originally hails from Vacaville, but who played off and on during the summers at some of the Double Pump events here in SoCal, and who attended Maine Central Institute as a 5th year prep student, has signed a National Letter of Intent with St. Mary's in Moraga.  Sure, it's not really SoCal, but hey, St. Mary's competes in the WCC and we've seen Blake play a bunch of times, so....Anyway, here's the press release issued by St. Mary's late last week, announcing Sholberg's signing:

7'1 Blake Sholberg Signs With Gaels

May 4, 2002

Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's head men's basketball coach Randy Bennett announced today that Blake Sholberg (Vacaville, CA) signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball for Saint Mary's College for the next four years.

"With the signing of Blake, he gives Saint Mary's something currently not in the program, height," stated head coach Randy Bennett. "At seven plus, there are not a lot of players with his kind of size and he fills a need for us. He's kind of a late bloomer, only playing basketball for three years, but he will have an opportunity to become a top player in the West Coast Conference."

Sholberg, a 7'1" 235-pound center will come to Saint Mary's from the Maine Central Institute Prepatory school where he averaged 10 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks in 18 minutes last year. Last season at MCI the team finished with a 26-5 record and advanced to the first round of the Maine playoff. MCI Prep has an outstanding tradition of producing top notch college basketball players that include Sam Cassell, Cuttino Mobley and Eric Barkley.

Sholberg played high school basketball at Will C. Woods High School in Vacaville, California. During his senior season, he averaged 12 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks per game. He ranked in the top-20 in the nation in rebounds and in the top-five in California. He was a team captain and was voted the team's Most Improved Player following his senior season. He led the team in rebounding and blocked shots and was an All-Montecelo Empire League selection.

Sholberg joins Frederic Adjiwanou, a transfer from Foothill Community College, and Jonathon Sanders, a transfer from Colorado State, in this years recruiting class. Adjiwanou is a 6'9" power forward who averaged 18 points and eight rebounds as a freshman at Foothill. Sanders a 6'7" forward/guard will be eligible to play in December of 2002.
