Where:

Cleveland HS,
Canoga Park, CA

Who:

12 Local HS Teams

Not NCAA Certified, Not CIF-Sanctioned

As with the other Cleveland HS Slam Jam Tournament organized by Jack Pollon, we've seen a ton of messages about this one on our SoCalHoops message boards, so if you've seen this before, pardon us for being repetitive.   Not only is there a Slam Jam No. 1 Tournament from July 12-14, but there will evidently be a second such tournament which will run from August 2-4, 2002 (during the NCAA "dead period"....Note, we originally incorrectly noted that this was also the CIF-SS dead period, but that's incorrect.   The CIF-SS dead period runs from August 5-25, 2002....and is not applicable to this event). The tournament will also be hosted at Cleveland HS in Reseda just like the No. 1 tournament.   If you've seen the pools for the first tournament, this one will look eerily similar, as will the schedules which follow....

Again, as with the first No. 1 Slam Jam Summer tournament, we've pretty much made up the schedule for the last day in terms of what games we'd expect to see during the time slots that Jack provided to us.    We know for certain that the finals will be scheduled at 7:00 p.m. and theoretically, you ought to see the third and fifth place games in the order we've listed them in order to have a suitable break before the two teams in the finals get to play, but then again, anything can and probably will happen. The only thing we know for certain about the last day is the time of each game.  Who you'll see in each of these games will depend upon what happens in pool play.

We also have no idea how much the admission fee will be to enter the gym at this tournament, but if it's anything like past events organized by Jack Pollon, you should expect to pay about $5 for admission, which is reasonable.  If you have questions about the tournament, the teams playing and the like, call Jack at 818-680-3923.

Lastly, unlike the No. 1 Slam Jam Summer Tournament  which will take place during the NCAA exposure period (but which is not certified by the NCAA, and thus college coaches can't be in attendance), this No. 2 tournament will take place during the NCAA "dead period."

And while we originally reported that this one would take place during a CIF-SS dead period as well, that was not correct, and we want to extend our apologies to Jack Pollon for any confusion this may have created.    This year, the CIF-SS dead period runs from August 5 through August 25, 2002, so CIF-SS coaches can be at the tournament with their teams.

Also, it's important to understand the difference between the CIF-SS "dead period" and the NCAA's "dead period."  The two have nothing to do with one another.   The NCAA's rule merely states that Division I coaches may not engage in any recruiting activities during the NCAA dead period.   So what this means is that NCAA D-I coaches won't be there.  Period.  But it certainly doesn't mean that a tournament can't take place, and this one is going ahead full steam.

We'd like to say "see you there" for this tournament, but we'll probably be off fishing and camping in the Sierra's, taking a much needed break after the July madness.  But if you like to live dangerously, and if you didn't have enough hoops in July, this tournament will be there waiting for you should you absolutely require a basketball fix in early August.
