What:   Best In The West Small Schools Invitational
When:   July 25-28, 2002
Where:   Cerritos Valley Christian HS
Who:   16 Local Small Schools HS Teams
  Not an NCAA Certified Event

Like the tournament for the large schools, Jeff Day, who now organizes the Best in the West Series of Tournaments, has organized a small-schools tournament which has some of the better Division III, IV and V teams participating.   The tournament will take place at Valley Christian HS in Cerritos, and will take place over a period of four days.  The last day of the tournament is actually a Sunday, so the tournament will move for that day only to a different location, most likely to Whitney or another local high school gym that will be available that day.  And like the varsity large schools tournament which takes place the following week, from August 1-4, we also don't have any brackets or pool assignments for this one, but we do have a partial list of teams.  Teams scheduled to participate include:

St. Margaret's
Cerritos
Calvary Chapel Downey
St. Bernard's
Servite
Whitney
Mary Star of the Sea
Marshall Fundamental
Corona del Mar
Ribet Academy
Western Christian
Apostolic Christian
Joshua Springs
Santa Ana Bethel Christian
Garden Grove Pacifica

While this is called a "small schools" tournament, it's actually more like a mix between mid-sized schools (e.g., Pacifica and Servite, which are really not "small" at least in terms of enrollment), and the truly, truly tiny (e.g., schools like Apostolic and SA Bethel, which are not even CIF members, but instead which compete in their own leagues), so you'll see a variety of matchups and competition that you're not likely to see anywhere else.   In truth and in fact though, this one conflicts directly with the Pump's Best of Summer, with the Nike-sponsored Fairfax Tournament, and with the EBO-Oakland Slam N Jam "Elite 8x2" up in Berkeley, so if you don't see a lot of college coaches in attendance (actually you won't see any D-I's at all because it's not NCAA certified), you'll understand why.

We'll post the brackets as soon as they are made available.   In the meantime, if you have any questions about the tournament, or want to enter a team (on the wait list), give Jeff Day a call at 562-860-3727.
