Many of us who can remember more than last year will recall that Issy Washington each summer used to run a tournament called the "End of Summer" tournament, but he used to run it right at the beginning of what most of us thought of as "summer"...shortly after the official start of summer on the calendar, but right at the end of the summer high school season, which actually runs only during June, and before the long, slow, death march that is the NCAA summer camp and tournament circuit to which July is devoted.
We're not certain whether Issy has anything to do with this tournament any longer, but there will be an incarnation of the tournament that many of us have come to know once again this year, and it will again be played at Carson High School, which is located on Main, just south of the 223rd Street exit on the Harbor Freeway, in the City of Carson.
This tournament is going to feature several of the top teams in the City Section as well as some other top talent from around the Southern Section: Here's the first day's schedule (we'll post the complete bracket shortly):
June 30, 2002--First Day Schedule
10:00 a.m. |
Carson vs. West Torrance |
11:15 a.m. |
Locke vs. Morningside |
12:30 p.m. |
Gardena vs. Verbum Dei |
1:45 p.m. |
L.A. Jefferson vs. LB Poly |
3:00 p.m. |
Narbonne vs. Fremont |
4:15 p.m. |
Lynwood vs. Taft |
5:30 p.m. |

We'll have some additional information on this tournament shortly, including roster information. This is not an NCAA certified event, but there will be a lot of the top players getting a tuneup before the start of ABCD and Nike Camps, as well as the rest of the long grind, and it's likely a last chance to see most of the high school teams playing together as a unit before they split up for July.
See you there.
