And 1 (the shoe company) is apparently trying to get into the business of summer basketball tournament sponsorship, and they're doing it in a big way this year.

The 2002 Lynwood "And 1" Summer Classic is one of a series of regional summer high school team tournaments taking place in late June around the country, which will culminate with 8 regional champions being invited to play in the first annual "And 1 Summer National Championships" to be held at the Palestra on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, July 12-14, 2002.

The tournament is being run by The HoopGroup and Eastern Invitational (aka Rob Kennedy and Dennis Gregory), the same folks who originally (with the help of And 1) brought you the now-defunct "HoopsTV" website, the internet's original answer to Slam Magazine for high school, club and college hoops.  Unfortunately, that HoopsTV is no longer with us, but the Hoop Group and Eastern Invitational camps and tournaments are, and so is the new And 1 series of tournaments.

There will be a lot of teams competing all over the country for the right to participate in the And 1 Summer National Championship at Penn.   In addition to the Lynwood tournament next weekend (one of two "West Regionals"), there will be two "East Regionals,"  one at Seton Hall (NJ) and the other in Washington DC; two "Southeast Regionals"   one in Atlanta (GA), and the other in Charlotte (NC);  two "Midwest Regionals" with one at Notre Dame (IN), and the other in Overland (KS); as well as one more "West Regional" which will be held in Seattle.

The Lynwood HS Tournament  will feature some very talented players and some of the top "summer" high school teams in the region, including:  Long Beach Poly, Crenshaw, Inglewood, Verbum Dei, Bellflower, Eisenhower, Pasadena, Cleveland, Montclair Prep, Bishop Montgomery, Loyola, Lynwood, Dominguez, Artesia, Mayfair, Morningside, Compton Centennial, and others.

Jeff Day, who is also running his own "Best in the West" series of tournaments, has signed on to help out with the tournament administration, and he sent us the following brackets (note: we're not going to post the loser's brackets, since we don't have time, and besides, if you're on a team in that end of the bracket, you'll know where to be and when to be there anyway....):

Teams competing in the other regionals around the country will include such traditionally strong programs as St. Anthony from Jersey City, Rice from NY, St. Raymond's from the Bronx, Rainier Beach from Seattle, DeMatha from Maryland, Miami Christian, Pace from Atlanta, Charlestown from Maine, Lakewood from St. Petersburg Florida, Proviso East from Illinois, Bishop O'Connell from Arlington, Virginia, Vashon from St. Louis, Missouri, Harrisburg HS from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania,  St. Patrick's from Elizabeth, New Jersey, Portland Jefferson HS, Archbishop Spaulding from Maryland, Oxon Hill from Maryland, Whitney Young from Chicago, Illinois, West Side HS from Gary, Indiana, Mercer Island HS from Washington,  Roosevelt from Maryland, Paseo Academy from Springfield, Missouri, Archbishop Carroll from Pennsylvania, Julian HS from Chicago, Central from Kalamazoo, Michigan, Custer from Milwaukee, Wisconsin,  Putnam City from Oklahoma, Redan HS from Stone Mountain, Georgia, Free State HS from Lawrence, Kansas, Landmark Christian from Fairburn, Georgia, Monroe HS from Albany, Georgia, Douglas HS Atlanta, Georgia, American Heritage HS from Plantation, Florida, and on and on and on....

Again, there are a whole slew of consolation and loser's bracket games which are not shown on the bracket above, which will provide for complete action from start to finish each day, i.e., from 2:00 p.m. each afternoon until the final tip off at 8:00 p.m..  The Championship game will be played Saturday, June 29, 2002 at 8:00 p.m. on the main court at Lynwood.  We don't have the time right now to put up the brackets for the consolation/loser's bracket games.  Suffice it to say this will be a big tournament and a great way to kick off the summer for most of the teams participating, as well as a great way to get 8 top teams back east for a "national championship" of sorts....Well, we don't think that's really what it will be, but what the heck, it's not bad for summer competition.

Lastly, if you have any questions or need any information about this event, feel free to contact Jeff Day at 562-860-3727.

See you there.
