Mayfair HS "Two Thousand and II"
Summer Matchup Set For July 14--(June 17, 2002)

What:

Mayfair HS "Two Thousand and II"   Summer Matchup

When:

July 14,  2002

Where:

St. John Bosco

Who:

16 Top SoCal High School Teams

  NCAA Certified?

Last summer, Mayfair coach Dave Brieg kicked off a successful event, and this year, he's at it again with the "Mayfair Two Thousand and II" Summer Match-Up.  You might also notice that the games are being played at St. John Bosco HS, in Bellflower, rather than at Mayfair HS this year.   Why?  Because the floor at Mayfair is being resurfaced.

Second, you'll also note that we've listed this as "NCAA Certified" but followed by a "?"   Why?   Because as far as we know, the event is not yet shown on the NCAA's own certified event list.  However, we've also seen a memo sent by Coach Brieg to other coaches who will be bringing their teams to the event  in which he suggests that they comply with the NCAA's summer coaching certification requirements.   Now this is confusing for us, because the coaches'  "approval" requirements are only applicable if an event is going to be NCAA certified.  In other words, NCAA D-I coaches cannot attend events which are not NCAA certified, and high school (or club for that matter) coaches only need to be "approved" if an event is NCAA certified.   So, either Coach Brieg knows something we don't, and his event is in fact going to be NCAA certified, or it isn't....either way, right now, all we know is that there's going to be a set of games on July 14, 2002 at St. John Bosco, and it's going to feature a lot of good teams.

Here's the schedule for Sunday, July 14, 2002:

10: 00 a.m.

Brentwood vs. Santa Monica

11:00 a.m.

Montclair Prep vs. Verbum Dei

12:00 p.m.

Washington Prep vs. Serra

1:00 p.m.

Crossroads vs. Los Alamitos

2:10 p.m.

Ocean View vs. Taft

3:10 p.m.

Esperanza vs. Mission Prep

4:10 p.m.

Northwood vs. Mayfair

5:10 p.m.

St. John Bosco vs. Redondo Union

6:20 p.m.

Villa Park vs. Carson

7:20 p.m.

Loyola vs. Bishop Montgomery

8:20 p.m.

Artesia vs. Long Beach Jordan

As you can see, this is a very strong field, and assuming that some of the best players will be in town for this one, and considering that it takes place on a Sunday, it should be an outstanding event.  Again, we're not sure whether Coach Brieg has secured NCAA certification or not, but if you have any questions for him about this you can give him a call at 562-925-9981, extention 2902 or on his cell at 562-714-9514.

See you there.
