Results From First Palm Springs
Summer Tourney--(June 26, 2002)

We received an e-mail report from Coach Randy Small, the head coach at Palm Springs HS with all of the results of this past weekend's first in the series of Summer Palm Springs HS Boys Tournaments.  Here's what Randy had to say:

Lincoln High of San Diego beat Artesia in the finals 51-50 on a Shaun Davis free throw after a disputed reach call with 2 seconds left. Davis was penned in near half court by Artesia defenders after taking it out with about 13 seconds left. Reggie Brown had just tied the game for Artesia with a three pointer with 15 seconds left in the game. Lincoln seemed to control most of this game going out to a 30-19 lead at the half behind the twosome of Davis (13 points) and Dominic McGuire. Artesia throughout the game would battle back only to see Lincoln go back up by 5 - 7 points. Davis led all scorers with 24 points, while McGuire chipped in with 8 points and numerous boards. For Artesia Kejuan Johnson had 16 points and Reggie Brown had 12. Colony took third place with a forfeit win over San Marcos. Indio took the consolation title with a 43-33 victory over Banning.

Lincoln barely made it out of their bracket to the championship, going through the motions to barely beat Laguna Beach 47-45. In the semis, Lincoln squeaked out a 2 OT thriller against Colony of Alaska. In the sudden death second OT, a foul was called against a Colony player on the opening tip, and Davis went to the line to win the game 52-51. Artesia's road to the final was somewhat simpler, though they were pressed by both Huntington Beach and Los Altos. Most Valuable Player was Dominic McGuire of Lincoln.
