Men's Basketball - Loyola Marymount University has hired Richard Reed as an assistant men's basketball coach.

Los Angeles, Calif. (June 17, 2002)-- The Loyola Marymount University men's basketball program has hired Richard Reed as an assistant coach, head coach Steve Aggers announced today.

Reed fills the Lions' third assistant position and completes the Lions full-time coaching staff for the upcoming 2002-03 season. Reed will oversee the strength and conditioning of the Lions' players, organizing team travel, equipment, facilities and summer camps.

"Rich is a Southern California native who has great ties within the Los Angeles basketball community," said Aggers, who enters his third season at the helm of the Lions. "He will help us in our recruiting efforts for the best available local talent."

He has spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach with the men's basketball program at Cal Poly Pomona. While at Pomona, he designed and implemented a total strength and conditioning program, monitored the academic progress of the student-athletes and worked closely with the surrounding community to develop positive relations through summer camps and community service programs.

"He is a high energy, hard working young coach with a bright future," said Aggers. "He will work closely with our perimeter/guard and wing players. He will bring a lot of positives to the program."

Prior to Cal Poly, Reed was a graduate assistant coach for the women's basketball program at his alma mater, the University of La Verne. Reed was a two-year letterwinner for the men's basketball program at La Verne for coach Terry Boesel from 1997-99. He graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. Prior to attending La Verne, Reed received his Associate of Arts degree at East Los Angeles College and was a two-time letterwinner for the men's program.

A 1994 graduate of Bishop Amont High School, Reed was recruited by Cal State University at Los Angeles. Reed earned all-league honors as a junior at Bishop Amont and led the team in assists and steals as a senior. He served a redshirt season at CSULA prior to transferring to ELAC.

Reed replaces former third assistant Dedrique Taylor, who left to become the top assistant coach with the new coaching staff at Portland State.
