Palm Springs Boys' Weekend Tournament
#2 Starts Today--(July 5, 2002)

Each year, Palm Springs High School hosts a series of summer tournaments.  The first boys' tournament was held a week and a half ago (actually two weeks ago by the time you read this), and it was once again won by Lincoln of San Diego, which defeated Artesia in an exciting finish.   This weekend marks the start of the second of the series of tournaments, and according to Palm Springs High School head coach Randy Small, "This one could be the most competitive we've ever featured."

Randy sent us the first day's game assignments, and we're happy to pass them along. If you're out in the desert this weekend and looking to see some excellent hoops action before the camps get started on Monday, check this out:

Here's the schedule for Friday, July 5 schedule:

3:00 p.m.

G1

Juneau 2 (Alaska) vs. Central

4:00 p.m.

G2

Palm Springs v. Montebello

5:00 p.m.

G3

Buena Park vs. Pacific

  Nogales vs. Rancho Cucamonga

6:00 p.m.

G4

Juneau 1 vs. Hemet

7:00 p.m.

G5

Newbury Park vs. Norwalk

G6 Escondido vs. Winner G1
8:00 p.m. G7 Montclair Prep vs. Winner G2 G8 AB Miller vs. Winner G3

While this game schedule looks a bit weird, it's not.   There are two courts in the main gym at Palm Springs HS and there's plenty of good seating around the main court, which is where we'd expect to see the most competitive games.  We're not sure who will really be playing with these squads, and in fact, we're pretty certain that Montclair Prep will not have Nick Stiggers since he's supposed to be attending ABCD camp again this year, but we'll take Randy at his word that this will be a competitive event.  Hopefully we'll get another of Randy's excellent reports, because we won't be able to be in attendance either.

The action will continue all day tomorrow (Saturday) and into the evening as single-elimination bracket play will begin.
