Old News (Sorta, Kinda): SDSU Elevates
Greg Gottlieb To Assistant--(July 2, 2002)

sandiegostate.gif (2363 bytes)This is old news (sort of), and it actually happened in May (actually on May 10 to be specific), but we just missed it at the time.  We thought we'd pass it along now since we're passing out San Diego State news with the commitment today of Wesley Stokes, who will transfer to the Aztecs.    Greg Gottlieb was a player in his own right at Drake, and he is also the brother of Doug Gottlieb, and the son of Bob Gottlieb, a former Division I coach himself for 10 years, who now runs the Branch West summer travel teams.    Greg has also decided to make coaching his career, and after stints at Cal Poly SLO and Sacramento State,  he joined Steve Fisher's staff at San Diego State a few years ago as the director of basketball operations. Here's the official press release from San Diego State:

Gregg Gottlieb Named San Diego State Men's Basketball Assistant Coach

UCLA graduate moves from director of basketball operations to assistant coach
May 10, 2002

SAN DIEGO - Gregg Gottlieb, who served as the Aztecs' director of basketball operations the previous three seasons, has been named an assistant men's basketball coach at San Diego State, Steve Fisher announced on Friday (May 10). Gottlieb replaces Jim Tomey, who accepted the head coaching position of the SDSU women's program last month.

"We are very excited to finalize Gregg's appointment as an assistant coach on our staff," Fisher said. "This position will give him an opportunity to assist in all aspects of the program, including on-court coaching and recruiting. He brings experience and a background that should lend itself to excelling in his new role." Gottlieb moved to San Diego in 1999 and served for three seasons as the director of basketball operations. An original member of Steve Fisher's SDSU staff, Gottlieb oversaw many of the day-to-day operations, including the negotiating of scheduling, coordinating of film exchange and serving as the basketball liaison and committee board member for the program's booster group, and organizing and negotiating of all aspects of team travel.

"I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with coach Steve Fisher and an excellent staff," Gottlieb said. "I am excited to work with this team in a coaching capacity. It is a great chance to get back into coaching and I am looking forward to getting on the court as well as going on the road and recruiting. "My goal is to be a tremendous asset to the San Diego State basketball program."

A collegiate player at Drake, Gottlieb received his undergraduate degree from UCLA in 1995. He began his coaching career at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo and helped the Mustangs improve their victory total from one win, the year before his arrival, to 16 victories in the 1995-96 campaign. He coached for two seasons at Cal Poly, earning his M.B.A. from the University in 1997. He also served as an assistant coach at Cal State Sacramento for two seasons from 1997-99. Gottlieb, 30 (born: March 3, 1972), is single and resides in Pacific Beach, Calif.
