Cal Gets Good News Again:
Ayinde Ubaka Commits--(Aug. 29, 2002)
While Cal has had an interesting summer no one can say it's been boring. First Gabe Hughes asks for and gets his release, then decides to come back. Cal gets a big verbal commitment from Leon Powe, but then Shantay Legans announces that he's leaving.
But today, the Bears get more good news: According to NorCalPreps' Lorenzo Harris, Ayinde Ubaka (6'-2" Sr. PG) from Oakland HS, (who played a few tournaments with Rick Issacs' H-Squad team, but who was an Oakland Solider at heart) , gave a verbal commitment to Berkeley. Ubaka will join a recruiting class that was already ranked No. 3 by ESPN before he committed, and it includes Powe, Marquise Kately (who will be at MCI Prep this year), and Wesley Washington from Mater Dei.
According to NorCal Preps' story,
"Ubaka's decision ultimately came down to either Cal or Arizona. 'I have no reason to leave home', said Ayinde. 'Cal is close to home so my family can see me play'. He also mentioned a better opportunity to play right away and a Cal education as other factors in his decision. The fact that Powe will also attend Cal had no bearing on Ubaka's decision.....Before he signs in November, Ubaka will attempt to achieve a qualifying score on his entrance exam to go along with a 2.6 core GPA. He recently scored a 17 on the ACT (he needs an 18 to qualify). He plans to take the Kaplan prep course and take the SAT in October.
