Steve Beason, Former Cal Poly
SLO Coach Stricken By ALS--(Sept. 19, 2002)
Even though this occurred last week, we wanted to note it, because of its importance to the Southern California basketball community. Cal Poly SLO issued a press release last week, noting the passing of Steve Beason:
Former Basketball Coach Succumbs to ALS
(8/12/02) Former men's basketball coach Steve Beason died Friday after suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.
Beason served as head coach of the Mustangs from 1986-'87 season through the 1994-'95 season. He also assisted the Mustang program for one year prior to being named head coach. Beason compiled three 19-win seasons; 1986-87 (19-10), 1989-90 (19-9), and 1991-92 (19-8). During the 19-10 season, Beason led the Mustangs to a CCAA (California Collegiate Athletic Association) championship. The nine-year head concluded his career at Cal Poly with a 121-122 record.
Beason is survived by his wife, Denise, and their two daughters, Ashley and Laura. Memorial contributions can be made to "The Beason Children's Education Fund" and sent in care of Education Credit Union, 2808 SW Arrowhead Rd., Topeka, KS 66614.
