E.J. Harris Transfers To Big Sky's
Cal State Univ. Sacramento--(Sept. 18, 2002)

We don't often get a chance to really follow the Big Sky Conference teams,  now that CSUN, the last remaining SoCal team in that conference moved over to the Big West last season, and thus we missed the report about E.J. Harris, formerly of Crossroads and Crenshaw high schools transferring to Sacramento State.   But thanks to Dinos Trigonis at Fullcourt Press.net, we learned that E.J. (short for "Edmund J.") finally found a home after leaving Washington State this past fall.  E.J. played over the summer in the Say No League and did very well, and contrary to earlier reports that he was going to attend a D-II program or possibly an NAIA school, is now confirmed to be at Sac State.   He will have to sit this season, but will have two more years to play. Oh, and by the way, someone please remind Dinos that Sacramento State is not in the Big West, but the Big Sky..... Anyway, here's the official press release issued by the Sacramento State Hornets:

E.J. HARRIS TRANSFERS TO MEN’S BASKETBALL
Release Date: 9/4/2002

ej.jpg (16370 bytes)SACRAMENTO, Calif. — E.J. Harris, who played the past two seasons at Washington State, officially transferred to Sacramento State, the men’s basketball team announced today. Due to NCAA regulations, Harris will redshirt the 2002-03 season and will be eligible to play the following year as a junior.

“E.J. brings a lot of Division I experience to the team,” head coach Jerome Jenkins said. “He has played in the Pac-10 and will help us in the backcourt. Combined with (incoming freshman) DeShawn Freeman, they can be one of top point guard tandems in the Big Sky Conference.”

Harris played in 21 games for the Cougars last season. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound point guard averaged 7.5 minutes per game while dishing out 12 assists and collecting three steals. He played one game as a freshman at WSU in 2000-01.

“He’s a hard nosed defensive player,” Jenkins said. “He is strong in the open floor and I will feel very comfortable with him leading our fast break.”

A graduate of Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles, Harris was invited to the Nike All-American Camp following his senior year where he was ranked as the 19th best player. He also garnered all-state honors for the third-consecutive season by averaging 17 points, 9.4 assists and six steals. As a junior, he averaged just over 15 points, eight assists and four steals a game and led Crenshaw to a 26-5 overall record. Those numbers placed him on the all-state team and the Nike Prep Classic All-America team.

As a sophomore, Athlon Magazine selected him as an All-American while Street and Smith’s tabbed him honorable mention. He also garnered all-state honors and was named one of the three best point guards on the west coast by West Coast Hoops.

As a freshman at Crossroads High School, Harris helped lead the team to the California state title. That season he was also named as a Freshman All-American by Athlon Magazine. Harris started a point guard for Crossroads while current NBA-star Baron Davis started at shooting guard.
