Frosh-Soph
Top 24 & Top 48 Game Notes--(Oct. 29, 2002)
Dinos Trigonis not only hosted and organized the "Fullcourt Press Frosh-Soph" camp this weekend, he also organized a couple of "Cream of the Crop" type games (that's actually what they were called, as opposed to "All-Star" games), and Dinos also sent us some brief notes about each of the players who participated in these two games:
"Cream of the Crop" Top 24 Game Players
Grey Squad
1 A.J. Laguana 5’6" Freshman Poly (Long Beach)--Wesley Stokes-look-a-like and savvy ballhandler was a spark plug here. Small in stature, but large in heart and hair, A.J. has the ability to beat defenders off the dribble and make plays.
2 Joseph Johnson 5’10" Freshman Serra (Gardena)--Great looking lead guard with speed has nice potential! Very good student can knock down the perimeter shot too. Has talent to be a national recruit.
3 Tim McLauren 6’1" Freshman Lynwood --Ultra competitive combo-guard reminds me a lot of a young Wesley Washington. Slashing scorer makes plays at both ends of floor and is a very athletic defender. Had 12 points in this game.
4 Todd Lowenthal 6’0" Freshman Torrey Pines (Del Mar)--Upstart point guard was impressive here. Heady ballhandler with plenty of sizzle in the open court. Has nice outside stroke with nice ability to beat defenders off the dribble. Led his team to the 3-on-3 camp championship.
5 Ed White 6’4" Sophomore Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood)--Outstanding shooter is an underrated passer and ballhandler. Great court instincts and competitiveness. Mark my word: Ed will be a much sought after national recruit. Not a shabby student either (4.0 GPA).
6 Davon Lloyd 6’3" Sophomore Manuel Arts (Los Angeles)--One of the surprises of the camp, Davon was terrific. Class of 2005 sleeper has an excellent array of skills as well impressive athleticism in transition. Pumped in 15 points in this game.
8 Kenny Collins 6’5" Freshman Rancho Verde (Moreno Valley)--Promising freshman is oozing with potential. Still raw in many respects, Collins has an excellent build and athleticism and potential to be a top prospect in the Class of 2006.
9 Josh Guillory 6’4" Freshman Poly (Long Beach)--Pogo stick has very nice bounce. Underrated scorer has tremendous upside!
10 Jamal Boykin 6’6" Sophomore Fairfax (Los Angeles) --Man-child was arguably the best prospect here – scoring 31 points in the Top 24 Game and earning MVP honors. Blessed with both an excellent physique and a work ethic and attitude second to none, JB showed a polished offensive game down deep in the paint as well as further out on the perimeter. Agility, athleticism and quickness have all improved substantially from a year ago.
11 Terry (T.J.) Topercer 6’6" Sophomore St. Augustine (San Diego) --Wide-body has nice ability to finish with both hands around the basket and is a rugged rebounder.
12 Edward Dickerson 6’5" Sophomore Bellflower --Athletic forward runs floor well and has a great body.
Black Squad
1 Michael Gordon 5’7" Sophomore Centennial (Compton) --Very quick point has ability to keep defenders honest with an accurate three-point shot. Pesky defender plays to win.
2 Clinton Parks 5’10" Sophomore King (Riverside)--Savvy floor general has nice perimeter stroke. Clever ballhandler and passer.
3 Bryant Williams 5’10" Sophomore Rancho Verde (Moreno Valley)--Strong and athletic combo guard got to the basket almost at will here. Solid defender is also a dangerous outside shooter when hot.
4 Maurion Henderson 6’0" Sophomore Fairfax (Los Angeles) --Skilled point can make big shots, but needs to get teammates more involved in the half-court offensive scheme. Defensive intensity has improved and was impressive at times here. Had 14 points in this game.
5 Tyree Thompson 6’2" Freshman Centennial (Compton) --Talented off-guard can score and has nice potential.
6 Anthony Goods 6’2" Sophomore Centennial (Corona)--Athletic wing guard can score from a variety of spots on the floor. Very good defender has excellent ability to finish in transition.
7 Matt Hornbuckle 6’2" Freshman Oaks Christian (Westlake Village)--Good-looking freshman has nice skill level and excellent court instincts.
8 Joe Ford 6’3" Sophomore Campbell Hall (North Hollywood) --Another sleeper that emerged here! Long armed wing has nice scoring ability and knack of making plays. Consistent finisher in transition. One to track!!!!!!!!
9 Marcus Carter 6’4" Sophomore Claremont-- Athletic swingman has improved scoring abilities. Long arms help him finish plays when he attacks the basket. Consistent effort was impressive.
10 Jonathan Aiwazian 6’4" Sophomore Moorpark--Very headed player is fundamentally sound and fits in well with teammates. Very good passer competes and has ability to finish in traffic.
11 Jervaughn Johnson 6’5" Freshman Centennial (Compton) --Top freshman here has BIG upside and already possesses a fine package of offensive weapons. Memorable battle with Jamal Boykin may have been the highlight of the camp. Projected to top out in the 6’7-6’9" range (father is 6’11"). Had a team high 16 points in this game.
12 Jordan Wilkes 6’9" Sophomore Loyola (Los Angeles)--Soft hands with a feathery touch is an outstanding prospect. Lower back pain on Sunday limited minutes in top game. When strength and agility catch up with skill level, will be an elite recruit.
*** Others selected for Top 24 game but unable to attend:
* Shane Mahoney 5’8" Sophomore Malibu--Tough point guard is a nice passer and underrated outside shooter.
* Thomas Oden 6’5" Sophomore Malibu --Husky and physical forward is a load in the paint with nice ability to finish in traffic.
* Brian McTear 5’9" Sophomore Crenshaw (Los Angeles)--Very quick lefty lead guard has nice perimeter stroke and can also soar for athletic dunks. Perhaps the best lead guard here.
