Brian Morrison Will
Return To UCLA--(Oct. 2, 2002)
According to the Daily News, Brian Morrison (6'-2" SG) will return to UCLA after reportedly leaving this past week amid speculation that the UNC transfer was headed for Washington instead. Morrison told the Daily News that he will fly back to Los Angeles today and will begin classes on Thursday. "I needed to step away and clear my head," Morrison told the Daily News in a phone conversation yesterday from his home in Seattle. "I was a little homesick, but UCLA is the place for me. I'm grateful Coach (Steve) Lavin left the door open for me."
According to the Daily News report, had Morrison made good on his withdrawal he would have been required to forfeit $4,000 in student and registration fees previously paid. The DN also says that according to Morrison "he's been guaranteed a scholarship for next year."
UCLA had a similar situation develop two years ago when Spencer Gloger initially committed to Princeton (which does not subscribe to the National Letter of Intent program) and then in late spring changed his mind and committed instead to the Bruins, signing a scholarship agreement. But before classes could begin for his freshman year, Gloger again changed his mind, enrolled at Princeton and had a terrific season in the Ivy League. The following year, Gloger decided to transfer to UCLA, enrolled, and spent the entire year on the bench as required under NCAA rules, but before he could play for the Bruins, again transferred back to Princeton, where he is now enrolled.
We hope this time that UCLA "takes" for Morrison.
