Signs NLI With SDSU--(Nov. 14, 2002)
San Diego State announced yesterday the signing of one high school basketball player to a national letter of intent: Marcus Slaughter (6'-8" Sr. F) from J.W. North in Riverside made good on his verbal commitment given earlier this summer and inked the deal with San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher. Our congratulations go to assistant Marvin Menzies who also was instrumental in Slaughter's recruitment after some excellent performances this summer while playing for the Double Pump All Stars, including a tournament championship at the Best of Summer Tournament over the Long Island Panthers. SAN DIEGO - San Diego State coach Steve Fisher has announced that Marcus Slaughter, a 6-8, 185-pound forward from Riverside, Calif., has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend San Diego State University and play basketball beginning with the 2003- 04 season.
Slaughter, a Street & Smith's honorable mention All-American, will be a senior this season at J.W. North High in Riverside. Last season, while attending Valley View, Slaughter unofficially averaged 21.0 points, 14.3 rebounds and 3.5 blocked shots per game. His rebound average last season was the fifth highest total in the state and led Riverside County in the category.
"We are really excited to add Marcus Slaughter to our San Diego State basketball program," Fisher said. "He epitomizes what teamwork and winning is all about."
"A gifted athlete and a consciousness student, Marcus will bring great versatility with perimeter skills wrapped in a 6-8 frame. His personality will make him a favorite among our fans. We have a added a quality person and an outstanding basketball player."
Slaughter became one of the top-rated players on the West coast this summer after performing well at a number of summer all-star games.
