Stanford Signs Two Players to National Letters of Intent

Nov. 14, 2002

Stanford, Ca - Tim Morris, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound guard, and Fred Washington, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound forward, have signed national letters of intent to play basketball at Stanford University. Morris and Washington will enroll at Stanford University in the Fall of 2003.

The signings of Morris and Washington were announced Thursday by Stanford head coach Mike Montgomery.

"We are really excited about adding Tim and Fred to our program," said Montgomery. "We earmarked Tim early in the recruiting process and he was the best student-athlete in the country. He can play three perimeter positions. He is strong, physical, athletic, and will be a great addition to the program. Fred also is a very good athlete. He plays really hard, can play some inside as well as on the perimeter, and will be a great asset as a student-athlete at Stanford."

Morris hails from Atlanta, Ga, and will play his senior season at Whitefield Academy in Atlanta. Last year as a junior, Morris averaged 24 points, eleven rebounds and five assists per game on a team that reached the state high school Final Four in Macon, Ga. Morris shot 51 percent from the floor and 77 percent from the free throw line. During his sophomore season, Morris averaged 17.1 points, eight rebounds and four assists per game.

Morris is listed as a high honorable mention All-American by Street & Smith's Magazine.

Morris has gained numerous post-season honors including first team All-State by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Atlanta Tipoff Club, and the regional Player of the Year.

Morris is also a highly-decorated academic student. In 2001, Morris was elected Student Body President, the first sophomore/junior in school history to serve as President. Morris has been on the Dean's List at Whitefield Academy for maintaining an "A" average.

"I selected Stanford for three reasons," said Morris. "It's the best combination of athletics and academics in the country. The basketball program  is strong, and Stanford is the prettiest campus I have ever seen."

Washington is a senior from Los Angeles, Ca, and attends Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance. Last year as a junior, Washington averaged 22 points (shot 55 percent from the floor) and eight rebounds per game in helping lead Bishop Montgomery to the CIF championship. Bishop Montgomery also won the league title. For his efforts, Washington was named CIF Division III Player of the Year. Two years ago as a sophomore, Washington averaged 18 points and five rebounds per game.

Washington also starred in the classroom, winning numerous academic honors including Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the Dean's List.

"Stanford is the best fit for me," said Washington. "I'm joining a great group of friends on the basketball team."

Washington, who is listed as a high honorable mention All-American by Street & Smith's, also has competed in track (200 meters, high jump) at Bishop Montgomery.
