Receive NLI's From Two--(Nov. 18, 2002)

We must have missed UC Santa Barbara's press release on Friday announcing the signing of two NLI's by prominent recruits for the men's basketball team, and even though the press release below is dated Nov. 15, it wasn't posted on the UCSB website until today, so we don't feel so bad for missing it. Anyway, UCSB has announced that they've received two signed NLI's, one from Cameron Goettsche (6'-9" So. F) from Salt Lake City CC, and another from Chris Devine (6'-7" Sr. F) from Chugiak HS in Eagle River, Alaska. Here's the press release:

Men's Basketball Signs Two Prized Recruits To National Letters Of Intent
Head coach Bob Williams inks 6-foot-9 Cameron Goettsche and 6-foot-7 Chris Devine in early signing period.

Santa Barbara, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara has signed Cameron Goettsche, a 6-foot-9 forward out of Salt Lake City Community College, and Chris Devine, a 6-foot-7 forward from Chugiak High School in Eagle River, Alaska, to National Letters of Intent, head basketball coach Bob Williams announced today.

"We are very pleased that Cameron and Chris have decided to come to UCSB next year," began Williams. "They are both very skilled and versatile players who, we think, will have outstanding careers. Cameron is a player we recruited very hard out of high school and while we had to wait, we think it will have been worth it. Chris is really competitive and will fit in perfectly with the type of players we have in the program."

Goettsche, who redshirted last year at the University of Utah, transferred to Salt Lake Community College where he will play his freshman year. He played his high school basketball at Thunderidge High School in his hometown of Highlands Ranch, Colorado. As a senior, Goettsche averaged 18.4 points and 10.4 rebounds per game while shooting 68.4% from the field. He earned team MVP honors as a freshman, junior and senior, was selected All-State and honorable mention All-American as a senior. In addition, he was a two-time All-Continental League choice. Out Out of high school, Goettsche was also recruited by Oregon, Marquette, and Wyoming, as well as UCSB and Utah.

"Cameron is bigger version of Mark Hull," Williams said. "At 6-9, he can really shoot it, bounce it and block shots. The other thing about Cameron that we really love is his athleticism and his jumping ability. He will be a great addition to the program."

Devine averaged 14.3 points and 7.9 rebounds as a junior. He shot 37.5 percent from beyond the three-point arc and hit 71-percent of his free throws. He was a Region 4 All-Conference choice and an All-State Selection. Devine was the MVP of the Alaska State Prep Tournament in 2002. Additionally, Devine was named Co-Mister Offense in his league as a senior.

"Chris is an all-court player," began Williams. "Offensively, he can play the one, two, three and four and defensively he can play the two, three and four. He is versatile, in the mold of (Branduinn) Fullove, Hull and (Josh) Davis. Chris is athletic and we felt he was the best competitor that we saw this summer."

UCSB will graduate just three players (Mark Hull, B.J. Ward, and Bray Skultety) from this year's team.
