The annual La Canada-St. Francis Tournament, which features some of the best teams in the region, will get started today with first round action.  We received a press release with details of the tournament, including schedules, and rather than paraphrasing it, we'll just pass it along.  While it's a bit unclear from the announcement, historically, winner's bracket (as well as first round games) have been played at La Canada HS, while consolation bracket games have been played at St. Francis, and we're assuming it will be the same thing again this year.  So, unless you hear otherwise, all of the game schedules below involve games being played at La Canada HS.   Here's what we know:

2002 La Canada/St. Francis Tournament
To Feature Top Area, Canadian Teams

Bishop Montgomery High of Torrance, the three-time defending CIF divisional champion, will be among the favorites at the 12th annual La Canada/St. Francis Holiday boys' basketball tournament, which opens Monday, Dec. 16. The tournament also features perennial West San Gabriel Valley powers La Canada and Muir (which are ranked among the top four in the Star-News area rankings) as well as Moorpark, which is one of the finest teams in Ventura County this season and could have its best team in over a decade.

The tournament features pool play the first three days, with the semifinals on Friday and the championship game on Saturday evening, Dec. 21. La Canada, which is ranked No. 1 in the West San Gabriel Valley, opens the tournament on Monday, Dec. 16, against Canadian opponent Maple Ridge High School from British Columbia. Maple Ridge is one of the finest Canadian teams to ever play in the tournament, having lost earlier this season by just three points to the third-ranked team in British Columbia. The Ramblers are ranked No. 9 in the province.

Muir High School of Pasadena, which again is one of the top teams in the area, plays La Canada at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in a game which figures to have championship implications. Bishop Montgomery, widely regarded as one of the best two Division III schools in the entire state, features All-State senior Fred Washington. The 6-foot-5 forward was the CIF player of the year last season as has already signed to play at Stanford.
