The Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches' Association's (SCIBCA) annual just-before-summer-always-conflicts-with-the-NBA-finals tournament will take place this year starting Friday June 14, just in time for what most of us here in Los Angeles hope won't be game five of the NBA finals (we hope it won't because we hope the the Lakers don't get so bored with themselves that they manage to win the series in a clean-sweep of four games....but if they don't those of you who want to watch the first round of SCIBCA will have to choose, because tip-off will be 6:00 p.m. PST)....
The SCIBCA tournament then continues on Saturday, June 15, with second round action at most of the same sites where the first round games were played, with teams being placed in losers' and winners' brackets depending on the outcome of the first round games. The eventual "regional" winners from various sites will be shipped out on Sunday June 15 (yes, again just in time for tip-off of what would be Game 6 of the NBA Finals) for a round of play at Rio Hondo Community College, which is where the championship game will evidently be played at a time TBD (to be determined).
Seriously, this tournament, like the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce's "LA Watts Summer Games" (which also begins on June 15 & 16 for the first two rounds of competition and which will conclude on June 22 & 23), is a massive undertaking, with 86 different CIF-Southern Section teams playing games over the course of a weekend at 14 different high schools and one community college. This year, if anyone has complaints, compliments, kudos or just wants to talk about the tournament (other than on our message board), feel free to send your comments to Coach Dunbar at Bishop Amat HS, since he evidently devised the schedules and the brackets. In other words, Ray Lokar, the head coach at Bishop Amat and the current President of SCIBCA is disavowing all responsibility for the bracketing and the schedules, so be sure not to write or phone him.....(by the way, you can always reach Ray by e-mail at CoachLok@Yahoo.com, and you can always read his writings and collected works about coaching at his own site, CoachLok.com or by checking out his other site, Basketball-tips.com........but we digress, because this is supposed to be about the tournament and the brackets, so we'll move on.
We didn't have time to reproduce the brackets by hand in html, and didn't want to delay getting them posted, so we've converted them to Adobe PDF format.
You can see the brackets using these links (you'll need Adobe Reader installed on your computer. If you don't have it you can download it easily and it's free).
Again, we don't have the time to convert these by hand to html format (maybe later tonight), but here are the first round matchups. By the way, you'll also note that unlike the previous two versions of the SCIBCA tournament, there is no "large schools" and "small schools" division being made, just one gigantic tournament. Likewise, if there's a girls' version of this tournament (as there has been in the past) we know nothing about it, so that's why we're not posting anything for that tournament.
